BasedMontgomery Posted January 15 Report Posted January 15 Hello! Me and a couple friends picked up the game last week and have really been enjoying it! As it stands I am online a lot more than my friends and I would like to keep playing on the world when they are offline, but I don't want the seasons to change as to not disrupt their sense of the game. Could I simply disable seasons and up the amount of days per month for the world when I am playing on my own and then revert these changes when my friends are able to play? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you
Gabusmaximus Posted January 15 Report Posted January 15 You can change the days per month to make the seasons take longer. https://wiki.vintagestory.at/World_Configuration /worldconfig daysPerMonth [1-99] 1
Gabusmaximus Posted January 15 Report Posted January 15 Also you seem to able to disable season and change them on a whim but i don't know if it messes up anythings /worldconfig seasons [enabled|spring|summer|winter|fall] 1
Forks Posted January 16 Report Posted January 16 I've heard changing season length after world creation causes issues, but I don't have any solid proof. If crop and animal growth aren't a concern you could always do /time stop Although I believe this also stops natural health regeneration so keep that in mind. 1
BasedMontgomery Posted January 17 Author Report Posted January 17 Thank you both for the replies! I'll do a lil testing and update you if I figure anything out
Thorfinn Posted January 18 Report Posted January 18 You could also /time calendarspeedmul 0.016666667 to have things go real time. One day takes 24 hours of real time. I think crop rates would be slowed dramatically, since those are calendar based, but I don't think it would affect healing, as I'm pretty sure that is handled by /time speed. I suspect if you set calendarspeedmul to 0, no days would pass at all.
AcuteAangle Posted January 18 Report Posted January 18 (edited) I would suggest /time calendarspeedmul 0 as /time speed affects the day/night cycle and animations as well. /time calendarspeedmul 0 lets the day/night cycle continue, without advancing the date Edited January 18 by AcuteAangle Clarify

Changing the season & month length can cause problems by suddenly thrusting the server into a new season upon making the change. For example, I changed seasons & month lengths after starting, and it threw me into the dead of winter because of the changed calendar.
Ratbatboo Posted January 19 Report Posted January 19 Related question: My fiancee and I are looking to play on a server with just the two of us, and since we're currently not living in the same state (woe!) we'll be using a hosted server from the list. Is it reasonable/possible to manually start/stop the server just when we want to play together on most hosting services? Would this be complicated for someone who was a unix admin two decades ago? XD Frankly, it looks like most of them have web-front UI systems now, so my rusty command line skills shouldn't matter. Thanks!

Welcome to the forums(and the game)! What I would recommend is just making sure that time is set to pass only if a player is online. That way you don't have to mess with constantly starting and stopping the server. 1

I've played TFC in the past, so a lot of this feels familiar, but OH MY GOSH when darkness fell and I was just huddled up with a spear with my back to the fire. This game has some vibes, it truly does. Is that a fairly normal server setting or something that would require a fair bit of tweaking/knowledge to achieve? Thanks!

That I don't know, as I've never run a server. One thing I forgot to mention though when it comes to hosting a server; hosting on a separate machine usually gets better performance, but it is possible to start a singleplayer game and let others join. Takes a bit of fiddling to get it to work, but it's also an option. One thing I do recommend though is that if you go the dedicated server route, make sure you have a whitelist. Otherwise you may get unwanted visitors. Happened to my friend and I in our early VS days--the server wasn't whitelisted and some random player joined. They were, at least, nice enough to leave politely when asked.
Ratbatboo Posted January 19 Report Posted January 19 Oh, there's a golden truth of hosting games on the internet. Never allow open logins. I'll poke around and see what I can learn about it. Thanks for all of your help!

It is a very easy server setting. I have all my home servers set that way. It's in the "serverconfig.json" file and it's pretty close to the top. It should be set false by default. { "FileEditWarning": "PLEASE NOTE: This file is also loaded when you start a single player world. If you want to run a dedicated server without affecting single player, we recommend you install the game into a different folder and run the server from there.", "ConfigVersion": "1.9", "ServerName": "Vintage Story Server", "ServerUrl": null, "ServerDescription": null, "WelcomeMessage": "Welcome {0}, may you survive well and prosper", "Ip": null, "Port": 42420, "Upnp": false, "CompressPackets": true, "AdvertiseServer": true, "MaxClients": 16, "MaxClientsInQueue": 0, "PassTimeWhenEmpty": false,

I do this with servers I run with my son. I would suggest turning off the "AdvertiseServer" if you are just playing with your wife. You don't need the world to know the server exists anyway. "AdvertiseServer": false,
Ratbatboo Posted Sunday at 12:51 AM Report Posted Sunday at 12:51 AM I very much appreciate everyone putting in the effort here, and hopefully it will be useful to other players with similar concerns. In the end, we tried (just to see if it would work and have low enough latency to be fun) Hamachi, and turns out that is a very good solution for us. Thank you all again! 1
