Fin_Soup Posted February 10 Report Posted February 10 My world is just hitting winter for the first time, and all of a sudden, random cliffs just have their soil layers collapse out of nowhere, with a bunch of soil conga lines off in the distance as the game tries to process this. At first I thought it was because of a rift that had opened on the first cliff I noticed this on, but then I saw particles on far off cliffs that would randomly collapse when I got close enough. What could be causing this? Is it maybe the grass on these blocks dissapearing?
Robert Johnson Posted February 10 Report Posted February 10 (edited) What game mode are you playing? Wilderness Survival and Homo Sapiens by default have 'Sand, gravel, and soil with sideways instability' turned on, which means random landslides as well as collapses above open air can happen with those three block types, whether or not you are standing on the blocks that collapse. Or you turned the setting on yourself not knowing what it did. It is in the 'Survival challenges' section of the settings under the 'Block Gravity' setting. If you don't like or want that, you can turn it off even after world creation by using the appropriate World Configuration command from here: https://wiki.vintagestory.at/World_Configuration It could also be the case that snow has weight and the accumulation of it on unsupported ground is what is causing the collapses. Does anyone know if snow does indeed gain weight as it accumulates? It could also be like in Minecraft where the snow accumulating causes block updates in the vicinity, that then cause the collapses. I don't know enough about the internal workings of the game to know if that's a thing or not, and I generally don't play with that setting that way to give you firsthand knowledge. My wife and I prefer just the 'Sand and gravel' setting only when it comes to block gravity. If anyone with more intimate knowledge and experience with the game knows and can chime in, go for it. I want to know myself now. Edited February 10 by Robert Johnson expanded information, clarity 2

What I'm confused about is why entire cliffsides are coming down in landslides seemingly at random

At least I found them responsible for collapsing whole cliff sides in my ocean world play-through. I haven't played a in a while, so I cannot say how well this mod works, but I'd give it a try. 1
Maelstrom Posted February 10 Report Posted February 10 Rabbits, foxes, wolves, Seraphim. Anything that potentially triggers a block update can cause an landslide. Somewhere on the Utoobs someone posted an 8 minute montage of hilarious landslides, one of which caused a horrendous frame rate drop while the player ascends a ladder from a mine. The video zooms into the mini-map where a truly mindbogglingly massive landside continues which we see the end of when the player emerges from the mine. 1

What I'm confused about is why entire cliffsides are coming down in landslides seemingly at random Use the Sticky Dirt mod: https://mods.vintagestory.at/stickydirt It is fantastic, makes sideways soil instability make sense. It ties soil instability to vegetation cover. Plant roots make things more stable, essentially. You'll still have blocks slip out from under you if you're climbing steep cliffs, and dirt still caves in when you're digging it, but it stops whole hillsides collapsing because a rabbit walked by. I never play without it, and without enabling soil sideways instability. I wish sticky dirt was part of the vanilla game. 1 1
Fin_Soup Posted February 10 Author Report Posted February 10 thank you all for the mod recommendation. I will be trying it out 1

I never play without it, and without enabling soil sideways instability. I wish sticky dirt was part of the vanilla game. This is a great suggestion. I might try it for my next "big world." My first main world had soil instability on, but the downside is that after 20 years in one location, ALL of the hills were denuded to some extent, or weird pillars with a few trees on top. I turned it off for my second world, but it feels lacklustre not having soil collapse when it "should." So I'm tempted by the third way, which is to mod the behaviour so that blocks still fall, but you're no longer randomly losing mountains to a rabbit.

This mod really does work well. It just feels like the simple fix the game needs.
