For those playing 1.22, is fishing alone enough to sustain hunger early game?

Hi, really looking forward to playing 1.22 when stable is released. One of my biggest struggle is finding food early game, especially if I start on a server in winter when food is scarce. With the introduction of fishing:

  • Can you fish early game, and
  • is it enough to sustain you food wise until you can get a steady supply such as a crop farm?

Regardless, Ive always wanted fishing in VS and now its finally arrived! My cosy game is got more cosier. Sitting on my backyard porch overlooking a river and fish while watching the sun set.

Yes, worm grunting (smaller fish) and bushmeat (bigger fish) are good early game sources of early game bait, and stink bait isn’t much more difficult.

there is a in-game guide on fishing, which should tell you anything else you would need to know, but I have not personally read it since it boils down to: add bait, cast, catch, change body’s of water if you stop catching or unable to catch fish.

i would atleast wait until you get a pot and bowl though, since cool fish only gives 100 sat, but in a meal it’s 375 per.

Well, wouldn't there be the same problem on a server? If everyone is fishing won't all the local ponds be fished out, just like all the berry bushes are picked?

I feel like the same could be said for everything else. Crops being forged, animals being hunted, etc

I assume you can fish in the sea or coastal areas. Those are usually quite large so it opens up a greater opportunity to find a fishing spot, I'm just guessing however as I have not tried 1.22 as yet. Also hoping you do not need to travel too far once a spot is fished out, and not have to find a different pond/lake.

Yes. All you need is a few sticks, some rope, and worms(or other bait), which you can get via "worm-grunting"--that is, banging sticks on the ground until worms appear, essentially.

In my opinion, no, though this depends in part on your game settings. Assuming defaults, you'll likely need to supplement your diet with foraging and hunting. If you have a cookpot, then you can probably skip the hunting and be fine until your crops are ready to harvest. Without a cookpot though, you'll probably need to go hunting a few times, since fish and foraged goodies alone most likely won't be enough to keep you supplied.

I think they're still tuning the numbers, but if you fish one spot heavily then you'll want to find a new fishing spot in order to keep catching fish efficiently. Fish can still be caught in an overfished spot, but it will take much longer between bites.

My strategy has been to just use a different fishing spot each time I go fishing, which has had modest success. Personally, I prefer to rely on hunting over fishing, since redmeat is more filling and I can usually acquire much more game in the same block of time than I can fish.

Might be okay if the map gives you a coastal area, but so m any of my maps are not. Good input though, I don't really consider heavy populated servers since I only play with 1 person on my server.

I guess that is the thing though. They have to create some type of system that allows people to reasonably be able to feed themselves on a server or get resources for that matter. There is plenty of ore typically so they have that under control for a reasonably populated server, but food is a different story. Seems like it would be an easy fix to change the fishing mechanic for servers so people could fish more without depleating the area.
