Getting back into the game (again ;w;) What should I do?

I'm thinking of just starting a new world. (Since I think I'm like.. 1-2 updates behind in my world?) maybe I'll get some steel armor in my current world to attempt the resonance archives beforehand. Besides that, I may download more mods like that rivers one, due to me not interacting with boats at ALL since the only bodies of water I ever found were small lakes (Do oceans actually exist base game? I dont know .w.)

I think the main detractor for me with vintage story is that there's so so so much in the base game, and that makes me more hesitant to mod it as I'm veryyy picky about gameplay. It's a complete-ish package in my eyes! So for me there's a bit more to balance.

I've also only played multiplayer once and we didnt get far... This is more due to them losing interest in vintage story.

Anyways what do you guys think? Is it better to start a new world now that my main world has stalled at the 100 hour mark? Since I could probably get through faster in a newer world with the knowledge I gained about the game.

They do. On default world gen settings with... what. 95% landmass? They are rather rare though.

As for what to do - honestly, only you yourself can say that. If it sounds more fun to try and salvage your old save and continue where you left off, then do that. Not having reached steel and not having been to the chapter 1, let alone chapter 2 story locations sounds like you still got a good way to go. And I can very much empathize with the notion of not wanting to go through the early game drag again and wasting all the time and effort spent on the previous world when it's not even finished. Minecraft, Factorio; many such games create that same feeling and hence I only ever return every couple years. If, however, you truly feel like having played the previous world into a wall and catching back up, let alone the potential risks of upgrading a world multiple major versions is a major pain and basically like starting over already and you don't mind trying again with more knowledge and the ability to achieve more in the next 100h then starting over is the better call.

And on the topic of mods - there are many good mods out there for any target playstyle. From vanilla+ to making Vintage Story a whole different game; you just need to know what exactly you want. If you now start adding alot of mods to spice things up, especially world generation mods, than you certainly need to start over.

They do exist, but on default settings they're quite rare. I think the land coverage by default is 97.5%, which means that there will be an ocean or two to encounter in the world...eventually...assuming you didn't get lucky enough to spawn next to one.

My personal preference is setting land cover to 80%. That leaves plenty of land to work with, so I won't get stuck on an island or anything, but also provides just enough large lakes and the occasional ocean to make things interesting and give value to the sailboat.

I would say hang on to your old world so you can pick it back later if you really want, and start a fresh world to have a change of scenery for a while. If you want to stick to vanilla, you could try different strategies, or just play normal and see how fast you can progress now compared to before, or even switch the starting zone and play in the tropics or arctic instead of the standard temperate.

Mods are really up to personal preference, though if you're looking to freshen up the game this is the route you'll probably want to take. I'd recommend keeping your modlist fairly small, especially if you're not experienced with modding, since that makes it much easier to figure out and fix problems when they arise. For modding 1.22 in particular, it's important to make sure that the mods are updated properly for that game version. While older mods often work on newer versions of the game, 1.22 introduced several changes that broke many older mods.

If you do go the modded route, also make sure you disable your mods before returning to any vanilla worlds. If you forget this step it won't necessarily break the world, but you might end up with some ? blocks to clean up, which isn't always fun.

Sticking with the same world but moving north or south by a couple thousand blocks is a fun diversion, temperature differences means your base has to adjust especially in arctic conditions (greenhouse matters a lot more). As for other ideas, I'd suggest looking into building up infrastructure (roads, canals, markers, etc...) and maybe think about dappling in automation, usually those are good late-game tasks since material costs get exponentially higher with time. As far as my goals in longer-worlds, I've actually started looking into making steel tools for every tool-type which means even niche tools (though this is something I've only done on one world so far) since the steel-making process takes substantial time and resources. Far as mods go, rivers is nice but works best on new worlds, I'd recommend also getting a mod like shipwright which expands boat-options since the default boat works best on oceans (which do spawn very rarely in normal worlds, albeit they aren't as wide or vast as you can achieve in modded world-gen) or large-lakes

I vote for a new start... I love the early game in VS.  Exploration of what the world has to offer and the new procedural dungeons to find.

You mentioned looking for an ocean, that would be another reason to restart with different settings per LadyWYT's reply.

Whatever you decide...  Enjoy :)

I like the idea of "rediscovering" my old stuff, so what I recently did was made a copy of my world, deleted the map, and teleported a random distance away multiple times using commands. Once I was fairly lost but knew roughly the direction of my old stuff, I started a new character, set the world spawn via commands, and set time to spring.

Only problem is there's no easy way to remove map markers or prospecting markers. So if I ever zoom my map out I'll see where my old stuff is. But it's been fun anyway.

Obviously that wouldn't work well if you want to change major terrain mods like rivers, but it's an option!
