Devastation be upon ye. The nutritional categories of Vintage Story generally use nutritional definitions for classification of food items. Or culinary definitions, since they are almost equivalent for the game's purpose, while the technically correct botanical classification is in this context practically irrelevant.

Well my heart is broken and my nutritional balance will continue to not inclue fruit until my randomly planted berry bushes reach critical mass.

They are scientifically classified as fruits, because they are berries. It's black and white, plain as day

this is correct but so are pumpkins, which are vegetables in game
cassava are vegetables but in game can be eaten as grain
soybeans are fruit irl but don't count as fruit in game
sunflower seeds are fruit but in game they are grain
honey is none of those but in game it's a fruit

point being: clearly the scientific classification isn't a concern for the devs, foods in game are classified by vibes, not science

So the devs are wrong, and I'm right. Checks out. Honey being a 'fruit' works because it is sugar rich.

The biggest thing I've gathered froim this conversation is we desperately need fruit crops

I'm not sure what you mean by that, there are 20+ types of fruit in the game you can farm if you wish.

More is always fine of course but it's not like there is currently a lack of fruits

I have simply not encountered them and found seeds then. I've only been playing for like a week or two.

By that logic a sugarbeet or sugarcane should also be classified as a fruit, I thought you were concerened with botanical definition?

You can't pick and choose where things apply my friend, either science is important in classifying food types or it isn't

I thought they were classified as fruits? Or grass.

I think fruits are confined to whatever tastes good in a fruit salad :P

nature disagrees, which is why tomatoes are berries. Culinary tastes do not define nutrition as much as we may like.

Sure but this is a game my man

True, but that's the only reason we're debating this in the first place. The developers are very fickle about adding things helpful to the players. Many vegetable crops should be fruits, but they're not. I'm not sure what else to say.

Well you're acting like fruit bushes aren't extremely prolific, unless it's dead of winter you'll have ample access to fruit most anywhere by just walking around

Well you're acting like it's not a completely different farming system from traditional crops. It's just an additional pain in the ass.

TECHNICALLY SPEAKING...

Many things we classify as vegetables are actually fruits because the come from the flower. True vegetables come from the plant itself (stem, leaves, roots, etc).

Knowledge is knowing tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a smoothie.

This distinction is why the food groups lump Fruits & Vegetables together into a single group.

Grains are different.

Pineapple is a berry.

How they get classified in game depends, really, on how they are typically used in foods and in this case

  • sweet = fruit
  • not sweet = vegetable
  • grain = grain
  • meat = protein
  • dairy = dairy

You find seeds for the vegetable plants in the wild by breaking the wild crops. Same for grains. You propagate the fruits by taking cuttings from the berry bushes and fruit trees and planting them.

That is just how the game works. If you don't like it there's a whole section on the wiki about how to create mods.

That's a strange thing to say considering it's most of the gameplay loop

I didn't say that, you're twisting my words. Specific food groups are a pain in the ass. Fruit and dairy. You can belittle my statements all you like, it doesn't make them less true.

I'll just suffer not having fruit and dairy in  my diet for awhile longer until my berry farm is better. I really thought punkins could be my fruit filling. Apparently not so much. I don't care enough to argue in detail like some of these folks want to. Fruits are fruits, veggies are veggies. If we're going into culinary use, we're digging too much into opinions.

*{EDIBLE FLOWERS}
hostas, chicory, dandylions(both used roots as coffee substitutes), rosehips(you get flowers and a food), daylily(2 colored flower cooked tastes like mix of green bean/onion)

{HERBS/SPICES}
spice bush(dried then ground up berries became allspice and twigs were brewed in tea)

Figure many of these will come with an alchemy-related update alongside reworks to existing flowers and bushes, maybe tea would come part of that? Otherwise, I could see spices being used within reworked body-temp mechanics, namely with regards to overheating (spices could maybe add some minor cooling effect to meals and more exotic or rare spices could be trader-locked?). As for other fruits, veggies, and grains, I think it could be possible to add more, but I am skeptical on their niche use-cases, already the game has several in all of those categories which means adding more variety might not really make a huge-difference...

Doesn't make them more true either, you seem to be the only one whos convinced of this ''truth''

But it would be fine if we had fruit crops that we could plant like tomatoes? Instead of the ones we can already plant like berries and trees?
