  1. Hmmm, I've used them on all floors just in case but it makes everything a bit odd: there's a step up to get through a door and full blocks are either too high to work on or have to be set into the floor. Personally I don't think it's a very good spawning mechanic, it's too arbitrary and inexplicable. Maybe it would be better if drifters spawned at some distance (regardless of light or block type) and tried to get to the player... and maybe had the ability to destroy blocks.
  2. Yes, I spent the next one atop a nerd pole in the freezing cold Provided the light is sufficient, is there any point in having half slabs on the floor at any time?
  3. Personally I'd prefer not to use mods.
  4. Just had an idea - a simpler mechanic which might require a lot less coding would be to have the large cog in the centre of the HUD gradually change colour. Maybe it could rotate and drain as now when near a bad place but rotate and change colour (but not drain) when a storm is coming. Or something like that....
  5. Yeah. But missing the warning when I'm a long way from home is my main concern!
  6. EDIT: Copied to Github issue tracker All dirt block textures in the hand or inventory/chests etc show varying degrees of corruption (they are fine when placed) . I mentioned this on discord, apparently some have had this issue for a while and I'm only bringing it up here because I noticed something yesterday: I logged into a MP server for the first time and when I went back to single player afterwards the textures seemed right ie soil with green grass on top. Maybe that can help find the root of the problem? VS 1.14.7, MX Linux 19.3, Radeon RX570 8gb, 16gb RAM
  7. I read that turning off music, turning up sounds and searching in wooded areas (especially if there are lots of flowers) is the way to go. I've found two nests by accident, they were very close to each other in birch woods. Like everything in this game it seems to be a case of 'just keep looking'!
  8. I fell down a hole and died at around 23 hours so started over. I've got plenty of copper and just making my first leather (a confusing process!). Also made a quern which is rather satisfying to use! Here's how it stands at present - I have a cellar with passage out to little farm and a small mixed woodland I've planted - there were no trees for miles around originally! I now find I'm in need of limestone but I can't find any despite having traveled miles away. I was also shocked when a gang of drifters materialized in my house during a temporal storm, even though all the floor is slabbed (lower half) and there's no other free surface (I added that central block afterwards - it's my spawn point). I've died once (two wolves) but decided to press on for a while rather than re-start. ree
  9. I've got about 50 hours in single player so far. I started playing with all the standard settings but permadeath, ie I would not re-spawn. I got to about 23 hours before I met my doom; I fell down a very deep hole from the surface while chasing an animal although I almost died a couple of times thanks to drifters spawning unexpectedly in my base. On second playthough I've died once - I was attacking a wolf (and winning) when another came up behind and ate me! In both games I've played as a commoner - the only surprise I've had was that I couldn't craft arrows at all. I think anyone should be able to make arrows but obviously the relevant class should be better at using them (more accurate or greater damage).
  10. Interesting. Maybe soil blocks could break into, say, 4 pieces of earth which might have different properties/nutrient values and could be reassembled to make better farmland?
  11. Pretty much my experience too, although I think I'm a little further behind. It's probably the best survival game I've played so far. I like to play permadeath so I'm playing an unmodded version with standard settings. My very first game I died on the second day (I think it was a fox that killed me!) so I restarted. I'm now up to about 12 hours play and just made my first copper tools (pick & propick) but found no ore from mining as yet. Your house looks a lot nicer than mine - I have a dirt cellar with two storage jars full of crocks although only one lot is sealed and my farm is about 20 blocks away built beside a lake so I dont have to water it The rest of the house is a slab hotchpotch! I'm aching to get enough copper to make a saw... that's going to be a game changer, fences, chests etc. I'll add some screenshots, if that's ok?
  12. Good idea, put it in 'suggestions' section? EDIT: Just noticed someone has!
  13. Ah, thanks. I removed the trenches around my hut... much quieter now
  14. Can the warning of an upcoming storm be made clearer somehow? I'm a new player and just survived my first storm. I was some way from home with half a spear left after hunting when I was caught with my pants down by the 'imminent' message. I must have missed the first warning, maybe it came while I was fighting a chicken or something . I'm trying to play permadeath. I'm about 13 hours in and was relying on that first warning. I could cope with having only one warning if it was prominent enough, I'd just go equipped with the necessaries (blocks for hiding/a bed and food) at all times
  15. That doesn't work for me - I haven't got a saw/planks/door yet so I live in a house made of mud and cobble, blocking up the door every night. It's still very loud.
  16. Blood and fruit or vegetable juice...? Yuk!
  17. Ah, the wiki threw me - bread, which requires water in under 'Basic Cooking' and since I couldn't make that I figured there was no point reading further! This will make the game much easier - thanks!
  18. I think the nutrient/soil mechanic is good but the display of percentage figures somewhat spoils the immersion. Might it be better to show this as three bars for K,N,P or better yet some sort of symbol/graphic which shows what type of crop(s) would grow best in that block? Perhaps some sort of 'pie chart' with crops around the edge, shaded to show the most suitable crop. Or, maybe that numerical information should only be visible using some sort of 'technology'. Stone Age people would have looked at, felt and maybe sniffed the soil and used experience to figure out what would grow there. Just ideas
  19. Yeah, they can be annoying. I dug a trench around two sides of my little cabin hoping I might get some free rabbits. One night I got about a dozen drifters and boy did I have trouble sleeping!
  20. Wait... can fire-pits ignite adjacent objects? My little wood-pile is right by my fire and there aren't many trees hereabouts!
  21. Personally, I don't really think default keys matter in any game ( probably with the exception of WASD for movement which is so ingrained). I'm guessing that for the 1 in 10 who are left-handed, (like me) many of the keys will get re-configured anyway. So long as all keys are reconfigurable and the new bindings are reflected in any on-screen messages it doesn't really matter to me - I always regard rebinding keys as part of the set up before playing any game. Anyway, have a chuckle at my controls... Cursor keys movement R Ctrl jump R Shift sprint Numpad 0 crouch I inventory M map C Character screeen Space sit (I hate the space bar ) I have mouse buttons set up as 'normal' but use second finger for left-click and index for right-click. Freak!
  22. Distro / Kernel release : MX Linux 19.3 (based on Debian 10 - Buster) Mono / .NET package version : mono-complete 5.18.0.240+dfsg-3 Graphics driver version : ATI support in kernel (Mesa 20.1.8, kernel 5.8.0-3-amd64 x86_64) Works for client, mp server or both : only tested single player Installation method used : didn't use install script, running in a terminal from the unzipped folder Hacks (if needed) : none AMD Ryzen 5 2600 Radeon RX 570 8gb RAM 16gb The only very small issue I have is soil textures in inventory/hand aren't quite right but not a problem. Re-mapping the L-Alt key means 'zoom' no longer works - I guess it's hard-wired. Runs well and seems stable, no crashes or glitches after ~12 hours play
  23. Thank you. The only thing I can cook at present is meat and cattail root I think - I don't have metal to make a saw to make a bucket to cook other stuff.
  24. Ah I see - thanks! Thank you for the detailed answer, much appreciated. Is there any difference between putting grain in a basket as opposed to a vessel (and storing in a cellar)? I'm in the early game stages and the days seem to be slipping by and I'm worried about not having enough food for winter - the technology required for cooking meals looks like it'll take some time to acquire.
  25. I'm sure I read that putting a fired crock in a firepit would open up a new inventory for the crock but that doesn't seem to work for me (and I can't find the place where I read it now!). Can someone help me out? Also, can harvested grain (eg rice) be put in a crock as it is and kept in a cellar to increase storage life (and does the crock have to be sealed to get this benefit?) TIA Paul
