Me too. At the end of my MC era, I couldn't play without it.

It would be nice if rivers actually flowed, too, unlike those of that other block game. I hate everything being level. The Earth has elevation, and that is part of what makes rivers a thing.

I'm pretty slow. During the first year's Spring/Summer I am fairly nomadic, and live like a primitive. I explore all the territory within a few kilometers, learning where all the nice spots are, as well as mushrooms, and hunting grounds. I set up a very primitive shelter/camp for protection from wolves and bears, gather what I need each day, and try not to gather much else, as I don't want to do too many trips carrying all my stuff when I do finally decide to settle down somewhere, and have to move. I usually will set up a very small plot for food sometime during the first year - less than twenty squares, and usually this isn't until mid to late Summer, and so I have to be careful about what I plant. Come late Summer I force myself to settle on a place that I will stay at least until the next Spring comes around, I quickly build a medium-sized shed-like structure as well as a ground-fridge. I fill the shed with containers, and begin to amass resources, especially food. I become a super-predator hunting everything near and far - excepting chickens which I catch and bring home. I usually try to gather up a bunch of clay as well, before it snows. Winter rolls around and I spend my time mining, making tools, and thinking about what I will build come spring - my shed fills to the brim with resources. Come Spring I plant all the seeds I obtained the previous year, and begin setting the foundations for a more permanent house. Note: I play in the homo-sapiens version, so no drifters or temporal storms to deal with. I don't care for any of the lore content, and so I essentially just progress from primitive man-of-the-land, to homesteader and that is where I stay.

Cool. Let me know how it goes. I'd love to hear.

At what point do you stop looking for a halite deposit?
Zero_ replied to Chuckerton's topic in Discussion
I'm having the same issue. Am I incorrect in assuming that if I get a percentage above zero for any particular ore that means that ore IS present in the area? It's not just a possibility, right? If I keep looking in this area, I will eventually find halite, right? Right? -
First time player, started on 1.20. Suggestions of things I noticed.

I like this idea. Yes. -
Yes. Something more like the Wandering Trader in the other block game would be ideal. I have traders disabled in VS.

"Something more like Terraria" You mean the real world. Lol

These rope leads don't really work well at all. Please make them more functional.

I love a realistic, more mature game, and so do many others. For example, most of the time I like playing games in "hardcore" mode where when one dies they have to restart completely, keeping only what they've learned. I enjoy the challenge. I enjoy that there is a need to be stoic with such a game or gamestyle. A game that seriously punishes mistakes is to me refreshing. There are few like that. You have to remember that you're preferences are just that - preferences. This is one reason I very much hope that mod development becomes easier and more accessible in the future. Then you and I will both be better able to get the experiences we desire. Customizability is king.

So what? It's already super easy to obtain way more than enough food in Vintage Story. We as humans like variety and so I think the whole "it'd become too easy and people wouldn't explore anymore, or wouldn't enjoy the full game" is a non-issue. We explore because we like to, we challenge ourselves because we enjoy challenges. That is why you continue to venture further and further from home to hunt as the game goes on, you continue to collect mushrooms, even though you have the ability to just grow what you need in your own backyard.

All grains are seeds. Wouldn't that be the most realistic?

I agree. Seems silly to me that the only way to get bighorn sheep from one area, to another, is to try and game the mechanics of bighorn sheep. I spent an hour or so yesterday attempting to move 4 bighorn sheep about 50 blocks. Only 1000 blocks or so to go. Jeez. I'm not sure what the proper way would be. Driving on horseback, and/or with dogs? Leading with a rope? A question in my mind, is whether leading or driving animals should only be possible for domesticated animals. I imagine a wild animal would be quite difficult to lead, but I don't know.

That would be interesting, though I'd rather it be functional rather than just cosmetic. One with greater muscle mass should be able to chop down trees easier. A body fat system would be interesting in terms of starvation? Perhaps then you could fast without starving, relying entirely on fat reserves?

I think, at least for people like myself, there would have to be quite a bit more mods for examples as to how to do things, as well as guides/tutorials, before I'd endeavor on such a journey. I'd love to do so in the future, though. Has to be easy though, otherwise I won't be able to motivate myself, as I have other interests as well that compete with any to do with VS. Thanks guys for the mod suggestion.

It'd be really neat if one could (if they so chose, don't make it a requirement!) participate in a more complicated animal harvesting process. Perhaps one harvests the animal on site, or perhaps they could haul an entire carcass of certain animals back home (in a "backpack" slot?), hang it to bleed, harvest select cuts, organs, age meat, make various multistep meals, and so on. Would give a guy something to do during the long nights. Harvest - On site or hauling home to harvest where one has all the proper tools (knives, saws, large workbench) Hauling home - In ones pack or perhaps on a cord/belt (chickens, other birds, squirrels, rabbits) - On one's back for certain animals (smaller deer, goats) - On horseback (eventually) - In a wagon or cart - person or horse driven - With another person or NPC, tied to a pole carried on the shoulder Cuts One could take those they are interested in, and turn the rest into steaks or ground meat. Organs Highly nutritious, one might harvest the heart, liver, kidneys, and intestines (for sausages). Other prep - Hanging to bleed, over a bucket, to collect the blood - some cultures use it for various blood puddings and such - Hanging meat to age - Cutting meat into thin slices and drying to make into a jerky Optionality And if people so chose, they could stick to just rough cuts, taking just rough pieces of meat, the hide, and bones, as they do currently. I'm just currently a bit bored by the process - it's too quick (you can hunt and dismember a couple dozen animals in a day's time in game nowadays - irl it takes a day to hunt and harvest one animal).

I'm not sure the food classification system in VS is very accurate at all. Reminds me of the Canadian food guide. Instead of having fruit, vegetable, protein, dairy, and grain, why not have something more akin to carbs, fat, and protein, as well as a few rudimentary vitamins? After all, one can survive entirely off of meat, build muscle, and stay healthy so long as they're also eating organs, and consuming bones.

Bone broth is very nutritious as well.
-
Coming across fallen trees, possibly with mushrooms growing on them would be neat.
-
Pick up a rock or some sticks when collecting them for crafting materials, and underneath you find a bunch of grubs!
-
I would love to be able to climb trees and collect bird eggs as another food source.
-
Chicken gardens! In real life chickens don't just eat grains, but will eat leafy greens and other veg as well.
