food spoilage item background

Recommended Posts

hi, just got vintage story recently and im really loving it so far, only got about a week or so in game. i noticed foods spoiling over time is indicated by a timer on the item tooltip; would it be possible to further highlight this by giving food items a background color to indicate their spoilage level, ala don't starve? would make it easier to see how your food is holding up at a glance. ill put a picture below of what i mean. thank you for making this game, and good luck on further development.

Welcome to VS and the forums!

I like this idea.   Might have some difficulty with it though since some food rots in a few days while others takes years.  At what point would something turn from one level to the next?  For instance if there's only 10% time left would it be red?  Well, grains would turn red with over 6 months left before they begin to spoil.

hey, thanks. yeah good point, maybe the bar on the item background simply shows you the spoilage percentage like in DS, but the colors can change on a per-food basis. so for grains it might only turn yellow with maybe a month or so left (even though the bar would be quite small at this point), and red if it has a week or some such? would be up to the devs of course. but if we also have the image border colored it should still be identifiable i think.

I like this idea too. Technically, we kinda have it already, given that a lot of the food will begin to show signs of rot as it spoils. However, it's not always immediately obvious(unless the redmeat has turned green or some similar). I do agree though, that figuring out the timing might be a bit tough.

Maybe skip yellow and just roll with red and green. Green for when the item is still fresh, red if it's begun to spoil at all. If yellow is included though, the yellow could indicate that the item only has hours of freshness left before it begins to spoil. The main issue I see here though is the colors might get a bit goofy when you're shuffling inventory around or going through other temperature changes(ie, what might be green in a storage vessel could turn yellow as soon as you move it to your inventory).

Good point, make it depend on the type

For grains 10-30 days should be red, for things like meat it should be half a day. Of course we should work out the breakpoints for yellow and red for every food type, but that shouldnt be too hard to do.
