Some people can't connect to my server, while others are playing on it just fine. Any tips?

I've been running a modded server for a few months now and *almost* everyone has had a mostly lag free smooth experience. No crashes, no connection timeouts, no issues getting in.

I've had two people out of 24 tell me they either can't connect (connection timeouts) or crash upon joining.

One person was solved by tinkering with firewall settings, (even though before changing them they could connect to other servers except mine), and one who crashes upon joining. Deleting their mods worked for awhile, now whenever they join they get: Connection closed unexpectedly: "Connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time." All the while several people are on playing just fine.

Does anyone have fixes, tips, or input on this? Why do some people have such a hard time connecting while others are fine?

Other things ruled out other than firewall is render distance and graphics settings since modded VS can be really intensive. This person was playing fine before and now can't connect at all. Our modlist [1.20.4]

I'm having the same issue where I'm hosting a server and it's saying Connection closed unexpectedly: "Connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time.  And I don't have any mods besides the ones that comes with the game. I'm using Ngrok as my VPN because UNnP stopped working for me and now the VPN isn't working when I host, all of this has happened over a course of a week and it's getting very frustrating that there are no fixes or tips on helping with this

I have the same issue. No VPN, no mods. My friends are getting the error message Connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time

I also are having problems atm. Friend have the "host not responding" and rubber banding. We found a problem with the firewall, and we fixd that. And it did infact nothing. 
When he drops, he gets told the " host is not responding" And i'm on a beefy pc with 64 RAM and Hamachi runs fine, and We tried both with and without mods, still no dice.

We tried a host of fixes for the hamachi end, and thats fixd. But nothing else sticks out... Both got above 16 ram.

Not that I know of, but I'm not sure I would, either. People log in when they have time, not on any particular schedule. No one has mentioned anything.

I'm guessing you are just opening your game to "LAN", instead of running a dedicated server? I don't have a whole lot of experience there.

What firewall settings? I have a friend with the same issue (connection timeout, even after rasing timeout to 300). @cosmobeau

Having this issue with vanilla. No Mods. Friend is hosting, a second friend has joined them. I cannot join them because of the "Connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time" error.
Nobody has mods as we've only just downloaded the game. Very odd.

First, do the following:

Check your Game Version 

Delete ALL mods in your mods folder & attempt reconnecting to re-download them,

Check the IP of the server

Get Whitelisted if your Host is in a different country and they may have GOIP blocking,

Check if YOUR IP has Changed!!!

Check if you can connect to the Test Server,

Mac Users: give the application permission to open in System Preferences > Privacy > Security,

To play Vintage Story multiplayer on a Mac, ensure you have the x64 version of .NET 7 Runtime installed.

All OS Users Check your Firewall Settings,

CONTROL PANEL SETTINGS
Set to private & public in Windows Defender Firewall (Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Defender Firewall > Allowed apps)
Change Advanced Sharing Settings: (Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center) . "Change sharing options for different network profiles": set to Turn on network discovery
