Sailing across the seas is pretty fun...

Given the huge uproar when sailing was first implemented...I will never look at the topic the same way again.

are you all happy with how it's implemented? How would you improve it?

Overall I'm satisfied. The sailboat speed received a much needed boost, and the raft's new storage option is nice. I'm not really sure what could be done to improve sailing, aside from implementing the coral reefs and adding some more aquatic wildlife. There really isn't much to see out on the water except...water...so I never expect sailing to be much more than a method to transport a large quantity of things from point A to point B, assuming there's a viable water route.

I personally think bigger waves to toss and turn the boat would be really neat.

Valheim has this. While interesting, it's rather immersion-breaking if you build on the beach, since the waves will flood your buildings but not actually do anything. Not that I'd want them to break stuff, but it's incredibly annoying to witness.

the thing with sailing, is trimming the sail, to gain that added efficiency/speed...

Also a thing in Valheim, and it was pretty fun, at least in small doses. Over long distances I found it tedious, but that's just me.

I'm not sure how difficult it would be to code variable wind direction in Vintage Story, or how much processing power it would take either. Windmills and certain other things would probably need to be reworked to account for the new mechanic, most likely, to keep it fully immersive.

I personally find sailing to be a bit too boring, and a bit too slow as is. At the very least, I wish I didn't have to hold W the whole time, and could look through my inventory, or handbook while sailing. It seems to only be as fast as walking. Considering the limitations of needing large bodies of water, and needing to navigate around entire continents, having a faster boat doesn't seem like that big of an ask. I used my boat once to visit the southern climate, and I don't think I will use it again tbh. It was slow, and boring.

I think they intend on adding an actual sailing mechanic, where you use the wind for mobility, so hopefully that implies not having to hold W the whole time lol. Plus, managing wind would at least give a tiny bit of mental stimulation while out on the water. Valheim is the closest approximation to what I assume we will get. Though, with how advanced the rest of VS is, I would love to see sailing get some extra complexities to make it more interesting.
I would also love to see the ability to stand on the boat, at least while its stationary. Would be nice to fish from, when that gets added. Clipping through it just feel bad. More water features will also need to be added for sure. Coral is nice, but unless they make water more clear, its likely not going to actually add much.

It can be done better. Valheim did waves very poorly imo. They just have a massive plain of water across the entire map, which is why it clips so bad. The other block game has a physics mod that includes ocean waves, and they flatten out as they approach land. So near the coast is flat, with no clipping, but once you are out in the middle of the ocean, it gets more rough.
I think it could work, at least with subtle waves. I would love to see some lapping waves in the water near the coasts. Just for that added ambiance. Though, dont know if it would be possible to do very well in a block game. Never know though. Anything is possible, so long as there is someone who wants to work to achieve it.

A bit on the dull side. There's nothing to do but set a large ball bearing on the W key and move over to a game on my other computer. Glance at the monitor every now and again. Still sailing? OK...

Part of the problem is I haven't figured out settings that make sense. It's either not worth building a sailboat because you can see across the water, and a raft is plenty, or there's no point in making a sailboat because I will never find land again.

Have you tried 90% landcover with 200% landmark scale? It means a tad more water, and the water that is there ends up being large lakes or seas. You can still see the other shoreline, in several cases, but the lake/sea is large enough that a sailboat becomes more practical than a raft if you expect to be hauling much cargo around. Likewise, the lakes and seas are also big enough that you can sail for quite a ways without needing to disembark.

My friend and I used that setting on our server and so far it's been a pleasant experience.

I do wish we didn't have to hold W to sail.  Old Arthur in the hands makes it most painful some days.  It would be great if it was something like the elk mechanic.  W to move, S to stop and the reverse.  Other than that a serious speed boost is in order.  I've modded the speed in the asset files to change rafts to 1.2x and boats to 1.8x speed which seems to be sufficient in 1.20.7.  I know I should make it a mod, but meh.  This seems to be working fine on my F&F server too.  My world settings have large oceans and fairly large islands which forces a bit of ocean exploration to find all the resources.  The fresh water seas can be an issue in winter though.  Being all iced in makes boat travel tedious.  Iron or better ice breaker plates for the bow maybe?  Even if they took wear and tear it would be cool.

I'll give 'er a whirl tonight. Got to August 7 in this playthrough, then, while jumping across the same territory I've traversed dozens of times to get around the lake to my deposits of clay and my forest, evidently landed on the only grass-free tile, it gave way, and I fell 40, 50 blocks to my death.

I like it but only being able to access my storage while I'm sitting in the boat is annoying, and the fact it just launches me into the water when I get out is even more annoying. I've got a dock with blocks tight to either side and it still usually dumps me in the water.
