Once you find the reading you want, then I recommend you have a stack of ladders and dig straight down while using the ladders to keep from falling in any caves you might hit. Prospect every 6-8 tiles down. Most ores don't spawn until you are lower than 0.7 of sealevel. If you didn't change world height sea level is 110 ish, so around 70-75 world height you start having a chance to find ore.

As the title says. I was wondering what are some good ways in locating a ore node when you go on a mining run and find a poor, decent, rich, and ultra rich ore reading from your prospecting pick.

Okay, when you want to hone in on the ore reading, switch to node-mode (holding your prospecting pick, press F).

Instead of trying to write it out how to narrow down your search (easier to say than to write), here is a video explaining it - he starts speaking specifically to node-mode about the 8:50 mark:

Default pro pick reads a 6 block radius from the one broken (13 block diameter) so it is safe to prospect every 10-12 blocks and not miss any potential deposits.

I know but I don't keep track as I mine down and it doesn't hurt anything beyond the durability of your propick.

Sloppy, I know.
