Hi,

it would be great if the game would automatically pause after loading.

Since my computer is pretty slow (but for some reason still manages the game pretty well which is amazing) loading takes a few minutes, so i'll often have the game in the background or go away doing something else entirely. But if i then forget about it or come back too late the game is already running and i might get killed or just waste some precious time. So adding the option of making the game pause after loading would be great (maybe putting a simple checkbox next to the savegames or in the loading screen itself).

Loving the game so far,

ChilyVanily

Vague apologies for necroing such an ancient thread, but this is something I'd absolutely love as well and is also something I don't think I can accomplish via modding (I'm not seeing any ability to pause the game or even open the handbook programatically). Given the load times modded VS can sometimes have, it'd be really nice to be able to just set it to load then go take care of something without having to worry about being attacked or starving or anything!

For single player, I think all you have to do is Esc instead of choosing colors, hair, class, etc. Now granted, you don't get any class benefits other than autopause on load... ;)

I also have Vague apologies for necroing this still ancient/unanswered thread to resuggest this feature because like everyone else, I get bored waiting for the load, thnk you

After last update, my potato laptop runs the game way smoother... but takes longer when loading the world. I have to wait 12 to 15 minutes every time just to open the heavyly-modded ones~ I, too, do something else in the meantime, and pausing after loading could be huge.

The game automatically pauses during character setup.  I believe that was implemented in 1.19 earlier this year.

Single player, right? So long as you ESC out of character setup instead of choosing all your colors and whatnot, the next time you start, it takes you to character screen, and auto-pauses.

You might be able to. There's a command I forget (because I've never used it) that lets you redo character generation. I'd bet if you enter chargen, and esc out, you get your autopause back.

+1 to this. I play heavily modded so it takes a good few minutes for the save to load. I tend to go do something else or watch something in the meanwhile and alt-tab from the game. I had more than a few instances where I forgot about the game running for +20 minutes, 90% of which the time was running.

And for anybody that intends to come again with "but the game pauses on character creation" - the thread is about LOADING the game, not CREATING a new save. Loading impies that the save already exists and we are just loading it so we can play on it again. The game definitely does not pause after loading at all, even if the game is minimized.

Right. It pauses every time I load, into the second year, precisely because once I figured out how it worked, I chose to have pause over having a character class. You could make the same choice. But I do agree. Games should pause on load, particularly those that can have lengthy load times. FWIW, when I'm playing one of those games, one I can't figure out how to pause on load, I either shrink it to PiP or slide it off onto my second monitor. Either way, it's just a click away, and it's more or less in my face the whole time. All it takes is a bit of forethought.

Must have just gotten in a fresh prescription of nasty pills, eh?

I have no idea what PiP is and googling it gives me "Personal independence payment" which I must assume is not what you were talking about. I also do not own a secondary monitor so unless you plan to buy me one there isn't much I can do in regards to such "forethought". Expoliting what I can only assume is a bug is also not a valid solution. But yes let's make me the bad guy for wanting to clarify the very thing people have repeatedly gotten wrong in this thread, over the years.

Maybe take your own advice and check those pills, eh?

Picture in Picture. It's a little more primitive version of dragging the window to whatever size is mostly out of the way, kind of like you do with the various popup screens (inventory, storage, handbook, etc.) in VS itself. Except unlike the in-game windows, you get to decide how big the VS main screen as a loading window is.

FWIW, I find that the game is only slow to load if you are playing off magnetic media. SSDs do not generally have this issue. External drives are often magnetic media so they will invariably be slower than if they were loaded with SSDs of the same size...albeit far more expensive. You do get what you pay for...

While this is true, heavily modded clients can easily be slow to load, even on an SSD. I have Vintage Story installed on an SSD, but heavily modded worlds will still load rather slowly. To be fair though, "slow" in such cases generally equates to a minute or two. Usually I'll just scroll through the news feed on my phone while waiting, or doodle on one of my nearby doodlepads.

Punched card decks and paper tape are pretty slow, too.

I kind of want to see what the game would look like on punch cards, now. I can't imagine it would take little more than a warehouse the size of Manhattan.

But think of all the jobs it would create. Of course, paying all those people would price it out of the ability of most people to afford to play, but such is the price of providing jobs, yea?

I too would like to see this feature. Not due to long load times, but also so I am free to do something else and not have to wait for the load to finish. I'm sure people with jobs that require standby, folks with animals, and parents can relate.
