Evoken Posted May 18, 2025 Report Posted May 18, 2025 (edited) I like to store things outside of chests and Vintage Story is very good at it... but not perfect. Wooden boards are used in so many things and in such quantities that storing them is a problem because 64 boards take full one block slot. 64 boards is really very little in VS. Maybe it could be stored like firewood, when two "firewood items" are stored as one firewood in "physical" world? So 128 boards would take only one block when it comes to storage. That would be a lot less painful Or is it an engine problem where storing 128 of something is too much? Edited May 19, 2025 by Evoken
wildforester Posted May 18, 2025 Report Posted May 18, 2025 I doubt this is an engine problem, just something that is not done. Storing planks in piles would be nice.

You can, just in remarkably small piles. I think the stack size is 48, actually, given that each layer is 3 boards.

Oh sh!et, you're right It's even bigger problem than i thought. 48 planks just for one stack :c Please devs, let us store more... 1
V1ncent Posted May 19, 2025 Report Posted May 19, 2025 That's why I have taken some mods to adjust not only those wooden materials (planks, branches, firewood, etc.) but also peanuts, soybeans, buckets, dough, etc.
Kaldo Posted May 19, 2025 Report Posted May 19, 2025 I also wish piles were more efficient since its my favorite way of storing goods, but sooner or later you will have to use chests whether you want or not. I tend to have a small "quick access / decorative" pile next to the chest which then actually stores hundreds of items.
Thorfinn Posted May 19, 2025 Report Posted May 19, 2025 (edited) I assume you are talking boards, not planks, right? Not getting the problem, though. The game is already letting you stack 4 logs worth of boards in the space of one log. IMO, the game already lets you cram too many resources into too small of a space. If you want a lumberyard, build a lumberyard, rather than stacking it in your dining room. Edited May 19, 2025 by Thorfinn 1
LadyWYT Posted May 19, 2025 Report Posted May 19, 2025 I think it's fine as-is. Ground storage is nice in the earlier stages of the game, when you may not have a lot of storage options. However, ground storage isn't very efficient in terms of space, and can be a potential fire hazard. Crates are the most efficient for mass storage of a specific item, as they compress several stacks of an item into the space of a single block. 1
Evoken Posted May 19, 2025 Author Report Posted May 19, 2025 (edited) Yeah, you guys are right but as I mentioned in the first post, I like to storage things outside of chests or even crates and I think Vintage Story is trying to accomplish that with it's various mechanics. It's really cool to see your stuff or building materials in real form placed somewhere in the world, not in tiny chest that should be damn sure too small for all the space it offers. You think more in stricte gameplay perspective when i'm thinking about immersive perspective. You can't tell me Vintage Story isn't trying to be immersive game 2 hours ago, Thorfinn said: I assume you are talking boards, not planks, right? Yeah, you're right, my bad, oops I'm playing in different language and my English is not that good. Anyway it just could be really cool to double the amount of boards you can pile, as 48 wooden boards in this game is sadly very little. And yes, I do have a special storage place for my wood, but still piling wooden boards is a problem. If we have the possibility to make piles of boards, why make it in terms of gameplay so unattractive :c Edited May 19, 2025 by Evoken 1

Y'know, build a lumberyard.
Dilan Rona Posted May 20, 2025 Report Posted May 20, 2025 48 boards stack per block is fine imo. I generally only use pine for planks in any case. And dont make more than 3 blocks worth of planks unless I absolutely have to.
