Michael Gates Posted May 29, 2025 Report Posted May 29, 2025 Something I've been noticing for a while now: when I see a single nugget of whatever type (copper, lead, etc.) on the surface in 1.20, I still get a surface deposit, but deeper than used to be possible. Like, six or seven blocks down into the rock. Is this just me, or is it the new normal?

Not sure about 7 blocks, but I've found a handful of deposits I had to drill 4-5 blocks deep to get (excluding the soil). Edited May 30, 2025 by Lemurface 2
Zane Mordien Posted May 30, 2025 Report Posted May 30, 2025 5-7 blocks doesn't seem weird to me. It's not normal but I've had a few that way. 2
Thorfinn Posted May 30, 2025 Report Posted May 30, 2025 I think I'm seeing fewer right under the dirt layer. That said, it's not a whole lot of data points -- 3, maybe 4 surface deposits per game. 1
Zane Mordien Posted May 30, 2025 Report Posted May 30, 2025 I'm the opposite, I find so much surface copper i don't bother with deep copper unless I run into it looking for tin or iron.
Never Jhonsen Posted May 31, 2025 Report Posted May 31, 2025 Back in 1.13 and 1.14 I had a world where, quite a number of times I found surface tin over 8 blocks below the dirt layer. It's not common, but the surface ores can be quite a ways down. 2
Thorfinn Posted May 31, 2025 Report Posted May 31, 2025 I think when mapgen made deeper dirt (used to be that much of the world had only 1 block of dirt on top of the rock), the surface ore generation did not account for that. So while the ore gen itself hasn't changed, it's still 5-ish from the top, but now that's often the first rock level. 1
Steel General Posted June 1, 2025 Report Posted June 1, 2025 The distance is stretched or compressed by changes to the default world height. Adding world height will add both dirt and stone between the nuggets and the deposit. I think some version recently tried to have fewer of the deposits appear on the topmost level of stone, but I'm not sure - it's been a few versions ago. 1
Maelstrom Posted June 3, 2025 Report Posted June 3, 2025 Surface ores can spawn up to 10 layers below the nuggets. My experience in 1.18+ has been that surface deposits tends to spawn no more than 6 blocks below the surface.
