Something I've been noticing for a while now: when I see a single nugget of whatever type (copper, lead, etc.) on the surface in 1.20, I still get a surface deposit, but deeper than used to be possible. Like, six or seven blocks down into the rock. Is this just me, or is it the new normal?

Not sure about 7 blocks, but I've found a handful of deposits I had to drill 4-5 blocks deep to get (excluding the soil).

Back in 1.13 and 1.14 I had a world where, quite a number of times I found surface tin over 8 blocks below the dirt layer.

It's not common, but the surface ores can be quite a ways down.

I think when mapgen made deeper dirt (used to be that much of the world had only 1 block of dirt on top of the rock), the surface ore generation did not account for that. So while the ore gen itself hasn't changed, it's still 5-ish from the top, but now that's often the first rock level.

The distance is stretched or compressed by changes to the default world height.  Adding world height will add both dirt and stone between the nuggets and the deposit.

I think some version recently tried to have fewer of the deposits appear on the topmost level of stone, but I'm not sure - it's been a few versions ago.
