rabbithaver Posted July 14, 2025 Report Posted July 14, 2025 after completing the first chapter of VS, i've realized what about this game appeals to me so much. it reminds me a lot of my favorite RPG, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind! the atmosphere, the themes, the lore, even the aesthetic all feel like Morrowind to me. it's kind of perfect, in my eyes. with all this in mind, i have to wonder... what other games serve as inspiration to the dev team? is Morrowind one of them?
LadyWYT Posted July 14, 2025 Report Posted July 14, 2025 Welcome to the forums! I'm not sure exactly where all inspirations come from, but H.P. Lovecraft and surrealism are major influences, I do believe. Likewise, Minecraft plays a role as well--Vintage Story started out as a mod for that game before morphing into its own separate entity. I also get some Morrowind vibes from Vintage Story, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if there were inspirations there too.
Zane Mordien Posted July 14, 2025 Report Posted July 14, 2025 Some Silent Hill as well. I've never played the game but Tyron has said as much in interviews.
Teh Pizza Lady Posted July 14, 2025 Report Posted July 14, 2025 Given the amount of mining and crafting that has to be done in this voxel game, I can't help but wonder if it also pulled some inspiration from that other block game whose name is escaping me at the moment...But it has a lot of mods that didn't work very well over there, but work excellently in Vintage Story due to the game's engine being setup to support it. Things like seasons, crop rotations, chiseling, and a rich modding atmosphere. In all seriousness, I get some Rust vibes but with a much less toxic community (outside of a few characters who have shown up recently).
Maelstrom Posted July 15, 2025 Report Posted July 15, 2025 Somewhere I either saw a comment or heard an interview where Tyron liked the TerraFirmaCraft mod from that other blocky, farmy; err... mining game.
