I've built two different towers in completely different areas. Both started to make me loose my mind. It was not going down until after I built about half the tower. I'm baffled and sad. I just wanted a square watchtower that I could live out of )':

It's not the cobble that's doing it, it's the location! Some area are just temporally unstable; you can be standing in a field, and watch your sanity gear tick down. Very annoying. Whatever you build in those areas, you're still going to have the problem.

Move a couple hundred squares over and you'll usually be out of the Bad Zone. And in general, look at what your sanity gear is doing before you build anything more serious than a quick dirt hut for a night's stay.

if you're open to mods I would recommend checking out Status HUD Continued, they have a HUD element that actively displays the temporal stability in a region! when a region has full temporal stability, the gear stays still and the HUD element is hidden, but whenever you walk somewhere temporally unstable it will show a decreasing stability percentage. i think it starts registering somewhere around 140% temporal stability and below. it also has a separate HUD element directly to the left of the hotbar that will display an icon for if something is considered a Room, a Greenhouse, or a Cellar which can be similarly useful for knowing if your builds are sealed/identified as rooms instead of needing to use /debug room hi

Oh that would be very helpful. Thanks.

of course! it's one of my personal favorite mods because it feels so lightweight and unobtrusive - there's also a whole bunch of settings so you can specifically toggle what information you do or don't want to see :) good luck and I hope you can find a nice stable region to build your tower!!

In addition to making sure the region is stable, I also recommend adding some windows to your tower in order to make sure some natural daylight is able to shine through. If there's not enough natural light, the game will assume you're in a cave--this happens frequently in cellars and other underground player structures.

Oh shoot fr? I can trick the game into thinking it's a cave? Well that will probably be what caused it then. Lemme try.

Pretty much. I'm not saying that's the issue here, but it's worth checking. 😆 Now if you ever need creepy ambience in a place, it's also a handy thing to know about.

Just remember that caves have nothing to do with temporal stability or "sanity" as everyone first calls it. The stability does not change at a location (x,y,z) ever because its set by the game seed. As you go down in a cave typically the stability will drop, but that is a function of the Z depth and not it being a cave.
