Hi!  Did I do something wrong when I clicked on CHAT on the VS homepage and joined the VS discord way back in April?  I signed up using my VS username and password and used the discord many times with no problem.  But tonight when I had to log back in to the discord after clicking on CHAT, using my VS information, it didn't work.  When I did forgot password I received an email about my original discord account.  So now I am logged in to the VS discord with my original discord from many years ago, not the VS account I made in April.  Did VS change the way it uses discord or did I do something weird? LOL

Hi! Welcome to the forum!

If I'm understanding you correctly, CHAT is the link on the VS homepage entitled "Discord chat server?" If so, that link is an invitation to join. In order to log back in, you would only need to log in to Discord (no need to join VS chat server for a second time).

It sounds to me as though you accidentally made a second Discord account when you joined the VS server. Instead of using your VS username & password, it should have been your original Discord info (I'm just guessing here; not an expert).

Discord is entirely under Discord's control, nothing VS can do can influence your account on it, even if you use the same account information on both.

Could I just say that I've only been on the Discord once, to ask a very specific question, and the community (at least while I was there) was absolutely lovely.

Should you be surprised by that? No, but I do find it can be a coin-toss with discord in general, as there are a lot of spicy internet randos out there.

I wish I had your experience. Every time I've been in the discord it's been singularly unhelpful. Either I can't get my question answered or, in the last case, I got actively trolled and left.

If the devs are going to be using Discord to communicate, they need much better moderation in place.

That's a bit of a shame. You can't account for internet randoms though, irrespective of the platform. In general (not specific to the VS community) I've found Discord to be infinitely less toxic than somewhere like Reddit. To be fair, the VS reddit has been pretty wholesome in general, but jinkies, that's not the same for most game subreddits.

Yeah, I do think this is a valid point to make. It falls down in the middle between official and unofficial fandoms, though. Take this forum, for example, it's official and I would presume fairly well moderated, whereas they would have no control over a 3rd party fan website. Discord is both official fandom (I guess the channel is considered "the official channel of Vintage Story") but unofficial in regard to the community.

That's the main flaw of Discord, in my opinion. In my experience the forum moderation is quite good, and while there are definitely heated scuffles from time to time the moderators will typically let users sort things out themselves(if possible) and only step in when absolutely needed. Discord...I'm not going to say it can't or doesn't work, but the problem there is that users can bypass Anego moderation and report straight to Discord itself, in which case you're going to be at the mercy of Discord moderation.

That, and discord is FULL of nasty hackers and bots.
