I've been playing this game for quite a while and in the past I would always time my cave diving and mining around when the rift activity was calm or low because there would be less or no monster spawns. I'm playing the game today and the rift activity is calm but there are monsters spawning under the trees near my base and they're in the caverns everywhere. Is this normal? Did I just have really good luck before? Or has something changed?

As far as I can tell, it gets dark enough under some trees that monsters will spawn, although it still tends to be somewhat rare. I will note that if there is a rift active nearby, monsters can still spawn on the surface in daylight, just at reduced numbers than nighttime. Spawning under the trees without rifts nearby though probably isn't intended behavior, and seems to be an issue introduced in 1.22.

The underground is hit-or-miss. As far as I'm aware, the more unstable an underground chunk is, the more likely there are to be monsters there. Rift activity is a factor as well, but calm activity isn't a guarantee that there won't be any monsters underground at all. It just means there will generally be fewer monsters to deal with.

Two questions would help narrow down what this is:

  • Do you know whether the rift activity changed recently? Monsters spawned earlier will linger for some time even after rift activity turns to "calm".
  • Do the monsters include drifters, or just bowtorn and shivers? I've found a bug or oversight recently which seems like it allows bowtorn and shivers to still spawn, so there's a chance that this is what you're experiencing. Naturally, this issue did not exist before bowtorn and shivers were added in 1.20.

In general, calm rift activity should ideally prevent all new drifter spawns on the surface, though bowtorn and shivers can still spawn rarely due to a bug as far as I can tell. When they do spawn, it is expected that they might walk out of caves, or occasionally spawn under very large trees which might be less intentional.

World stability has no effect, except by proxy through the player's own stability. Please try to keep in mind what I told you in the other thread here.

Rift activity only has effect on surface and deep drifters, so its impact is significant at Y > 0.55 and gradually becomes less meaningful until is essentially irrelevant at Y <= 0.22.

I missed the part about the monsters and thought it was only referring to the rifts.

As far as I'm aware monsters can still spawn when it's calm but just much less, so often it feels like it's fully safe. But I am quite sure i've been out before because it was a calm night and felt safe only to suddely hear a bowtorn charging up somewhere.

I've occasionally been assaulted by a monster during the day during prolonged calm rift activity.

But that could be from the Rustbound Magic mod, so I'll just sit in the corner and shut up now thankyouverymuch.  :/ xD
