Jacsmac Posted September 1 Report Posted September 1 I've had this idea for a while, so I'm putting it out there: One use for fireworks is just for celebration. You can place one on the ground, light it, and watch it fly up. There can be a few different colors, and they can be linked together to go off at about the same time. What if fireworks can be used for combat, and more than just sending them up while in a cave? With a torch in the offhand and a firework rocket in the main hand, you light the rocket and have to let it go. It will fly the direction you look, and you can delay the release to control how far away it explodes. The most difficult thing about crowds of mobs is that you can only damage one at a time unless you walk up to them and place a bomb. Launching fireworks would be a more effective way of damaging multiple monsters. The next part of the idea is using rockets with gliders (Thought exercise mostly, because elytra rockets are overpowered in the other game): Holding a lit rocket will propel you in the direction you look while you hold it, but the force is weak and rockets must explode. Players can risk more speed by holding onto the rocket longer but will be within the explosion radius if they don't let go quickly enough. Rockets would boost flight time but not make it infinite, though players who decide to tank multiple explosions should be rewarded with much more speed. The main thing about rocket boosting is that you shouldn't really be able to use it to take off from a standstill (unless you like exploding).

Absolutely yes, I would love to see this in the game. 2 hours ago, Jacsmac said: What if fireworks can be used for combat, and more than just sending them up while in a cave? Eh...I don't really think fireworks are well-suited for direct combat, and outside of signal flares, probably aren't things that should be used underground either. As a way to scare off, disorient, or distract certain types of enemies though? Sure. 2 hours ago, Jacsmac said: The next part of the idea is using rockets with gliders (Thought exercise mostly, because elytra rockets are overpowered in the other game): Absolutely not, for the precise reason that you mentioned. Controlled flight is incredibly powerful, and easily renders all other forms of travel(outside of teleportation) obsolete. Fireworks are going to be something that's cheap enough to acquire en masse once the player is reasonably advanced, so the ultimate result is similar to what happened with Minecraft's elytra. 2 hours ago, Jacsmac said: Rockets would boost flight time but not make it infinite, though players who decide to tank multiple explosions should be rewarded with much more speed. Given what the glider is made of, and that Vintage Story tends to lean more heavily into realism...realistically, the glider should be breaking apart, catching fire, or the player otherwise suffering serious injuries from using rockets in this manner. I don't think this really solves the above issue at all in regards to flight being overpowered, and it also results in a lot of annoyed players. 2
SnapJelly Posted September 2 Report Posted September 2 (edited) I would say no to most of these. Fireworks as a celebration tool would be fine but they'd be mostly a gimmick that most players will only interact with once or twice just to try it out and nothing more, like in the other block game hardly anyone bothered making fireworks untill they became usefull tools. All the other suggestions are literally just what rockets do in minecraft... propelling gliders, using as long distance bombs for combat is just minecraft rockets. Adding the twist that they would explode when you glide with them just makes them more frustrating to use but doesn't change much. Edited September 2 by SnapJelly spelling error 1
Demoncyborg Posted September 2 Report Posted September 2 i love the idea of a celebration tool!! considering how much processing i imagine they'd need (all that sulphur colored paper, metal salts) , could be a high-value item for traders to give them a 'real use' outside of just looking cool. but yeah gotta agree with everyone else on the rest-- rockets for combat and gliding isn't fitting for this game, just kinda feels like adding something just because it's in minecraft. using a loud sound to scare away predators/wildlife seems like the most likely option of the bunch! 1

Vintage Story has legitimately dark nights and leans more heavily into realism, so fireworks would probably look a lot less cartoony as well as be more striking since...well, it's actually dark enough for the sparkly bits to pop. Plus American players would probably have a blast celebrating the 4th of July with them, and players in general could have fun with them for other celebrations(like New Year's Day). Roleplaying servers would probably really enjoy them as well. 1

Yeah it's possible, I wouldn't mind them being added cuz vintage story does love it's decoration (I mean just look at the amount of flowers in game) But if they are added I hope they remain decoration and nothing more 1
Jacsmac Posted September 2 Author Report Posted September 2 I agree that the combat idea was a bit of a stretch, I was kind of brainstorming with all of the stuff after decoration and it's good to have some feedback. I think a better way to deal area damage would be to throw scrap bombs. I'm surprised that hasn't been added yet. 1
