I wonder if we will be getting aluminum electrolysis when the steam age is added?

You will not.  As of the recent 1.14 update, bauxite is used in the making of refractory bricks.  However, it's always there for someone to use when they mod in modern tech, should they desire.

You'd need:

(not limited to)

  • Machine tools
  • Iron casting (boiler plates)
  • Steam pressure tubing
  • High performance Static steam engines [many options - all needing sophisticated machining]
  • High performance Generators [like above but even MORE demanding]
  • High current Rectification [mostly metallurgy/chemistry]
  • Copper refining (bus bars....probably the only thing that can be built now)
  • Carbon rod production (Chemistry? - Not even sure how these are made....probably difficult)

Would be better / easier to ask for a Magic Forge that does it all.

As EACH of those components above needs a complex mod-system and many parts to be complete...

I remember that I've asked a similar question time ago. Making aluminum sounds cool but lately I thought: ok, we can make aluminum but to do what?

I mean, in a steam punky world iron and steel isn't enough?

Wait is steam planned? Also are they planning water power? I was thinking today how water wheels would be a great alternative to wind.

So here is a thread for the community to vote on the theme for the next update: https://www.vintagestory.at/forums/topic/3144-choose-your-favorite-theme-for-v115-gasp/

One of the choices is "The Industrialization Update" which does list water wheel. So I'm thinking it will be added at some point.

Ohhh ok ya I voted on that but didnt see the water wheel. I really want the story and "world building" added. I love when I have objectives like that. Most people seem fine just build houses but I get bored of that. Anyways, thanks.
