What mods do you suggest for a new player?
Never Jhonsen replied to mmogaddict's topic in Discussion
Here are some of the simple mods I use that won't break your world should you decide to remove them. - Better Firepits: Currently, when you cook a stack of an item, every time one finishes the temperature resets. This is wildly unrealistic, wasteful, and impractical. This is a fix for that. - Auto Map Markers: You'll need to configure it first, however this mod makes marking things quicker. Picking resin up automatically marks it, same with copper and tin bits on the ground. - QP ChiselTools: If you like to chisel, this makes it easier. - Flour Bags: This puts flour (and other powders) into visually stylistic bags. - Pick Block: This allows you to swap blocks in and out of your hotbar by merely looking at a block, and hitting the configured key.Useful for builds that need more than 10 blocks at once. -
Slice-able foods, sandwiches, toast, and fried food.

We have knives, bread, and jam in the vanilla game. What is to stop us from making a jam sandwich? Our Seraph not being creative enough to think of combining the two? -
Two things about cave-ins: - Solid blocks do not stop cave ins. Many times in 1.19 and 1.20 I have had rock fall through (and even delete) a ceiling of packed dirt, and wooden planks. (Living underground in the middle of a forest with soil and rock instability is a fun challenge ) - Support beams are the best way to go, but even they are not perfect. You can still have a cavein fall through a layer of support beams. They do help to mitigate it a lot however.

Oh whoops, I misread "Bismuth Bronze ProPick, Never Used"
-
Oh that's a great point. A gloopy black, not quite as thick as oil, but also not as watery as common blood. A rust black, much like their non-existent hearts.
-
I would have guessed a rust brown. Kinda like if red, iron-rich blood got rusty. Maybe even a thicker, more goopy, somewhat flaky slop than common blood
-
Frame the unused one. ”Tin Bronze Pickaxe. Never Used.”

I have 25 skeps in a 5x5 arrangement, with each skep getting it's own dedicated 5x5 section full of flowers, and a 21x20 field of cattails to replenish the skeps. Yes, I have a LOT of beeswax and honey. No, this is not overkill, as I need the honey to handle making jam with my blueberry field, which is almost 32x32; I think I have 5 rows left to fill?

Offical links for old (pre 1.9) versions of the game?
Never Jhonsen replied to wasa's topic in Questions
Actually I have something Vintage Story 1.9.14 is stored at (https://cdn.vintagestory.at/gamefiles/stable/vs_install_1.9.14.exe). So far, I've been able to modify that link to go as far back as 1.9.0, but 1.8.0 came up with nothing. Same with 1.4.0, 1.5.0, 1.6.0, and 1.7.0 EDIT: That above link can be modified to work from 1.9.0 to 1.18.7. With the Net7 update in 1.18.8, it's been changed to (https://cdn.vintagestory.at/gamefiles/stable/vs_install_win-x64_1.18.8.exe). -
Offical links for old (pre 1.9) versions of the game?
Never Jhonsen replied to wasa's topic in Questions
I don't have an instant answer for you, but I do wanna help with your goal in other ways. I used to do that a lot with that other blocky game as well, it was a fun time planning things around what updates give me I haven't thought of doing it with Vintage Story yet, but I can give you some pointers (that you may already know about). - That other game is known for making updates as friendly to older worlds as possible, however I don't feel that things were as smooth in Vintage Story. Firstly, if you have a VS world that is older than 1.18, you'll have to manually generate the Chapter 1 story yourself; that will never spawn. 1.20's Chapter 2 story locations will generate IF those chunks haven't been generated yet, but there are commands that will let you regenerate those locations in better places. - Pit Kilns were added in 1.14, before that you'd just toss your pottery in the firepit with firewood. So make sure to get all your pottery needs done before 1.14 - Older games had a 7x7x7 room limit for everything. Sometime between 1.15 and 1.18 they added the 14x14x14 limit to regular rooms and greenhouses. - 1.15 was the update that made updating the game easier, before that you had to manually install the next update. I don't think this'll be relevant with you, as you'll still have to manually go through each update regardless. - Either 1.17 or 1.18 changed the music disks to cylinders, and echo chambers to resonators. The older music disks can sit on mold racks, and they will stay on the mold racks when you update until you manually remove them yourself. And yes, seeing tuning cylinders on a mold rack DOES look silly, I wish I had a photo to share. - Nails and Strips were added in 1.19 (Unless it was 1.18), before that wooden things just didn't need them. - Fireclay was changed (very recently) in 1.20 to no longer spawn on the surface, but if you're starting waayyy back on early versions then I think you'll have plenty of generated clay for you to use by the time you get to 1.20 I can't remember too much before that, I've slept since those changes Anyways, good luck in your time warp adventures Let us know how easy it is to switch between versions without a dedicated launcher like that other game has, I'm curious for myself. -
I know some people have used creative to get to the top (and there is nothing wrong with that), me being one of them; got up to floor 6 before I gave up. I had the unique issue of no bird however; it took me sitting at the top for three ingame days straight before she showed up. I would /hate/ to be fighting around that parkour with an angry bird trying to knock you out Anyways, my point being, I think the average person dislikes how hard it is. I think if you could “fix” the elevator at every other floor, then that’ll make it much more doable.

Ahh, pit kilns . .. no longer are the simple days of tossing your clay items into a firepit and calling it a day, now you have to make this fancy hole in the ground that can catch things on fire. I don’t think I’ve ever made a wildfire from a pit kiln, but in being there from the start, and knowing the dangers, I’ve always kept them isolated. I will say, I have used them as intentional garbage disposals. Throw junk items at one, they’ll burn away

I forgot all about salt! Yes, I am a BIG pickler. I make all sorts of pickled veggies, as they'll easily last through the winter (and usually off to next winter), and having a shelf stable vegatable is awesome. There are some issues with them, as I have encountered here, but that asides, you can still make meals with them. Halite's a hard one to find, but it's a good thing you have a long time to hunt for it before winter comes

As someone who's been doing 30-day months since 1.15 was modern - Crops that take two months to grow on 9-day months will take 2 months to grow on 30-day months. Flax will take about 60 days. - You will have a LONG time to prepare for the winter. While what @idiomcritter says is true about the winters being long, you'll have plenty of prep time for it. Get your crops growing early and make about 50+ crocks and you'll have no issues. I don't move South btw, I stay in the temperate area. - I spend my long winters building and exploring. You don't have to as well, that's just how I like it. I did do both Story Chapters in two different winters. Makes the long travel ones easier with all the lakes frozen Other than that, I don't think there's any other differences Unless I forgot something big . ..

I have a 6th gen Pentium, 12GB DDR3, and a 2060 on Windows 10. And at Very High (+ god rays and FireFox YouTube music) I get about 60-75 FPS with an occasional drop to 30. This photo I took just after running 500 blocks from home (June 26th btw. .. look at that lake ice still there smh) I haven't done any of those settings from above (that I know of), but there is one thing I did that hasn't been mentioned yet; Settings (Windows app) -> Gaming -> Game Mode (set to on) Then from that screen, Graphics Settings -> Hardware-accelerated GPU Scheduling (Set to on) And on that same page, Graphics Performance Preferences. I've added all my games to get max performance.

You are correct! You can find this through the handbook, abet in an indirect way. When you open your handbook ('H' key by default), you can search up "Hematite" and scroll down through the search results. It will show you the various rocks that it spawns in. I wish it would list it directly on the Hematite page, but for now we make do with what we have. It looks like you have the first part of the Prospecting Pick down very well Using the ranged search to pinpoint potential locations as to where various ores could be. There is a second part to the prospecting pick however, and you can access that by pressing the modifier key ('F' key by default). There are two modes; A long ranged search, and a more direct, local search. The first mode tells you the potential for an ore to be in an area, while the short range will tell you exactly what IS in an area. I forget what the default block radius is, as I always play with the max block radius of 8 blocks. Go back down your shafts and use the short range search. Mine a block, and look in the chat for the area results. If you see no Hematite, mine out some blocks (For me with an 8 block radius, it'll be 8*2 + 1 extra block) and try again.

Bells can be the worst Nothing more scary than idling around in a cave and hearing one go off through the walls I personally haven't come across TWO bells at once, and I hope I never do Best of luck to you with those -
Something I have always wanted, is instead of a chat notification, we’d have to build a device that can detect the oncoming storm. The Rift Ward was a wonderful addition, but imagine if you could make a similar device that would start spinning when a Temporal Storm was approaching? And then when the temporal storm was imminent then the skybox could have some subtle reflections of that. It’s always felt weird to me how abrupt the storms started and stopped. I do like some of the other suggestions laid out here as well, I just wanted to add in my personal longtime vision

The items sinking into the ground is a welcome bug fix Same with the soil sideways instablity issues. Thanks for continuing to work on this game!

Those links are in what is called a "Forum Signature", which is a little place to tell people about yourself, should you so choose to. You can access this on the Vintage Story forums by: 1. At the top of the page, click on your name and hit "PROFILE" in the drop-down menu. This will take you to your profile page. 2. On your profile page, near the top right corner of your header image, click on "ACCOUNT SETTINGS". 3. On your account settings page, look for "SIGNATURE" in the side menu bar. From there, you can edit it to your hearts content Here is a quick link straight to your ACCOUNT SETTINGS page Also, good luck on your Viking Longhouse!

I am loving that idea, and if you'd humor me I'd like to add to it Bowtorn Spine Bow Made with Bowtorn Spines, and something to hold them together. They give more power than a standard wooden bow.

Ignoring Flint, the firepit resetting it's temps has been an issue (in my eyes) for a long while. I remember a time, much like how some YouTubers have done it, having to make 20 something fire pits just to create mortar. A nightmare Ever since I found out about that Better Firepits mod, I installed it and haven't looked back.

pick block button should work in survival as well (PLEASE)

This has been a complaint of mine for awhile! I know at one point there was a mod, but I can’t remember the name, nor do I know if it’s still updated for 1.20
