  1. I am really enjoying this update, and RC3 has been very stable. Even being forced to play without a lot of my usual mods hasn't been so bad, and some of the mods I don't even feel are necessary anymore. Having only really been interested in the sandbox/survival game prior, I'm even getting drawn into the lore and really looking forward to seeing more of the story unfold.
  2. Yeah, Blackguard is definitely a solid choice. That is why I said deer specifically. "and the like" would mean gazelles and other similar prey. They are fast and run, and it's a pain chasing after them. I also find goats to be a horrible pain in the ass to target as they jump around constantly. Granted, most animals will stop running after a bit and lie down. Yes, boars are pretty great. It seems like in 1.21 attacking a boar will provoke any nearby sow too. Same with sheep. Rabbits, foxes and coons I consider a waste of time in general. Chickens too unless you need feathers. I'm more interested in fat and hides than meat. As long as you are killing things, there will be plenty of meat. Of course if I am not finding larger game I will take what I can get.
  3. No, you can have multiple installations. See this guide as there is some tweaking you need to do to have a different data directory for each installation. I imagine the final is not going to be that far off, as Tyron has said this will probably be the last RC and the only major bug I've seen is "the emperor's new clothing" I predict this week.
  4. Oh, if it were implemented I absolutely think it should also be another opt-in feature. I see permadeath the same way, if not that glitches happen I would be more inclined to play with it on. I also tend to play way too many hours and when I get fatigued, I get sloppy. So it's something I would do with a side game and play short sessions when I can be focused and free of interruptions. This is also adding to the challenge in a similar (although much smaller) way. You have to build a little more intelligently.
  5. Yeah, the hunter is my favorite. The ranged & fleetfooted bonus offsets the armor penalties pretty nicely. Since I am still a big fan of heavy armor when deep underground. Without armor, the recurve and steel arrows are just devastating. Granted, I haven't tried the blackguard, which I know is your favored class. The main question in my mind with melee is always is this going to save me a swing? Like with a T5 falx, even with the penalties the hunter has, I think I calculated it at one time and worst case scenario is 1 extra swing. Of course if the BG needed 1 swing less (which means 2 less than the hunter) then that would be very worthwhile, especially if you favor melee. The only thing ranged is an absolute must for is hunting deer and the like, and you can do that without armor.
  6. True it is all in the implementation. As it seems I do all too often around this section, I will point out that it doesn't need to be super realistic to be worth implementing. You and I seem to both agree on the "but is it fun?" litmus test for features. I wouldn't bother with checking torches at all. It would likely be very resource intensive. It also doesn't add fun. I would check campfires, pit kilns and forge. Yes, use it only for rooms. Sure, people could cheese it if they like, but there are some benefits to having proper rooms, and if there were more benefits to rooms, people would be less likely to. I also like to keep my kitchen as a qualifying cellar for convenience. So I wouldn't be looking to cheese it, even if the chimney reduces the efficiency of the cellar. It is something like rain extinguishing fires. Once again, not a mechanic that adds fun. It doesn't present much of an engineering challenge, but it does force you to make a roof of some sort. We could really do without it, since all I wind up doing usually is making a stupid looking grid of rammed earth over my pit kilns, and it is pretty annoying to have to cover torches, but it isn't something I absolutely hate either. It's just a thing, and I deal with it.
  7. Is it really weak? Lately I have been thinking it might be the most powerful class. The bonus damage against mechanicals seems great, especially as I was considering farming saw-blades to be something worth doing and bells are a pain in the ass to kill. Although I am not sure if it does much more than offset the combat penalties. Being the penalties are vs both melee and ranged never thrills me, but it is what it is, and it seems common for a few classes. Fleet-footed is always great to have. The repair bonus is probably useful too (I dunno though, after a while I tend to start throwing T-gears away because they don't stack) The taming spear...I guess it is a little underwhelming, but then I haven't had a tamed locust yet.
  8. This is not a simulation game at all. Just because it tries to simulate some things doesn't make it the purpose of the game. A simulation game tries to portray the given processes with as much realism as possible. Ahhh Samwise...the loyal friend and reluctant hero. We raise a pint to him! Yeah, the animal domestication is just punishment. 10 generations is ludicrous. As far as fun or not, some of the mechanics that we all hate maybe don't directly add fun in and of themselves, but by the challenges they create that are fun to solve. I honestly think there should be a need for ventilation. Early on it will just be a hole in the roof, later chimneys, maybe even pipes & ductwork. It adds some engineering challenge, especially for underground bases. It is in the same category as unstable dirt and collapses. It isn't fun having the dirt slip out from under you when you walk up to the big gaping hole in the ground (it is bad enough that you'll probably fall into it without the stability mechanic enabled) or the ceiling collapse on you while mining; yet you yourself play with these enabled. It makes you have to be ever vigilant and think about what you are doing. It adds some realism to mining having to shore the ceiling up with braces. Honestly I like these mechanics in concept but I think the current execution leaves a lot to be desired.
  9. WTAF is a mouflon? NVM, Google says it is a bighorn sheep. So anyway, there are mods that add feed for chicken, pigs and sheep. Chicken feed, Pig feed and Sheep feed
  10. I did checklists for the first 4 days. After that it is really becomes more about reaching certain milestones vs discrete tasks on day X and there are too many variables at that point. I've put quite a bit more work into other sections as well, although it is far from done. All joking aside, I could use some feedback if anyone has the inclination. I am used to having a tech-writer make coherent documents out of the pages of drivel I crank out. I have been trying to cut down on the length of my rambling so as not to put the reader to sleep.
  11. While you make some good points, but then I'm old school and too many of my attitudes are shaped by the military so I see this trying to be all democratic in the work place as bullshit. It may work fine with a very small company, but I am a firm believer that no manager who has more than 10 direct reports is an effective manager. Yes, that means that the majority of managers in the world are not effective managers. I fully believe in a hierarchy and chain of command, and if I interview with a company that wants to tell me about their "soda fountain and ping pong tables and open floor plan and unlimited vacation" I thank them for their time and say goodbye. The way I see it though, we are getting another game for free. It is just going to be a mod, just like the regular game is now. Forcing you to download it? Are you paying an outrageous price for bandwidth? The whole installer is a little over 500 MB at the moment. That's half a gig. Half a gig! Even if that makes it double in size, we are talking 1 GB. Hell, let's quadruple it even. So 2 GB. That is fairly insignificant these days. Granted I was a little interested in Hytale (not enough to follow it much, but I've heard of it, I don't really go for hype) although considering that it is a failed project, I can't say I am enthusiastic about them picking it up, but Tyron has taken a "path less traveled" by most companies and has been financially successful. I have to give him the benefit of the doubt about how he chooses to run his business. Adding more people doesn't necessarily make the work go faster; 9 women can't have a baby in 1 month. Adding more work doesn't necessarily make the work slow down either, especially if it is work that does not impact the existing workers workloads.
  12. Yeah, it is pretty widely accepted these days that you should turn vsync off and just set whatever framerate cap you feel comfortable with, and that seems to get the best results. I cap VS at 75 fps and it runs smooth with high graphics options on my 4060. My monitor is 145hz, but I just don't see any point to push the card to make the room hotter when it wouldn't make any difference for this game to run at a higher framerate.
  13. Dear sir/madam, I assume the reader will be more than capable of accomplishing those tasks on his/her own and does not need guidance nor a reminder to complete said tasks. Furthermore, it is impossible to determine the amount of times per day the reader may need to perform said tasks, as some are more talented at performing said tasks than others. Yours, Krougal
  14. Uhh...clean install of what? The only thing right now that should be giving you update options for 1.21 is 1.21 (so like RC2 to 3). If you go to the download page, 1.20.12 is the last stable version. There are full and upgrade installers.
  15. I know I have gotten some in the past, but it was several versions ago, and I've never seen it since. It also might have been before it was craftable.
  16. Yeah, the bell sucks. Day 5 hardcore huh. You probably could do it day 1 on standard lol.
  17. As long as you have a boy animal and a girl animal, they can make babies. You say that now! Let's see how you feel after spending another year making the thing rideable. It certainly is in line with the rest of the game, animal husbandry is the grindiest grind in VS. It is and it isn't. It is decent for hunting in the dense forests early game, where it is easy to get surrounded by wolves, before you can make leather armor. I used to feel the same way about large and huge hides, except by the time I can make sturdy leather, I have way more than I even feel like cooking up, it is that much of a pain in the ass. There also isn't a lot to use it on for now (although there is a sturdy leather armor mod that I think is good). Even regular leather starts to pile up faster than you can use it. So in the end, you won't miss those 2 hides, especially if you got them early game, before you can tan and when fat is at a premium.
  18. You meant should not right?
  19. Well yeah, just because you could in theory capture one on day 1, it'd still take a year to train it, oh and you need leather to make a saddle. So for all intents and purposes it is probably going to be faster and easier to get 1 from the story line. This is what I call soft gating and I am a fan of. There is nothing preventing you from going after an elk right off the rip, but it isn't practical. There is nothing stopping you from trying to do the quest on day 1 either, except you are probably going to die repeatedly. We could just give Thorfinn an improvised armor and an inventory full of spears and send him on his way. What do you say Thor? Do it for the children! Do it for God and country! Do it for science! Do it because you can! Akur, Akir, Akam!
  20. Yeah, that's what I thought. I don't recall seeing any naturally occurring TP for a few versions.
  21. So I've been continuing to work on my google doc. I came up with an actual day 1 checklist. Forum converted all the boxes to images and made a mess out of it. The guide has an actual checkable checklist, and I plan on taking it further. Oh, I decided to release that mod I mentioned, https://mods.vintagestory.at/show/mod/27343 I didn't feel it was worth it's own post, but it's a thing now, and so far 92 people have downloaded it, so at least some people found it useful
  22. Is TP still findable in the vanilla game since it was made craftable?
  23. Starting in the extreme cold biomes (or hell, even just moving there later) are for people who want an extreme challenge. You can also just leave your food lying around on the ground, so there is that. I don't think we really need yet another resource that is the same thing with a different name; it would be simpler just to broaden the temperature range that cattails grow in. Doubly so since it is just an early game problem; it's too cold for bees which is really the only use case that continues throughout the game. At least until we get some kind of more modern beehives.
  24. Which is pretty much the start and end of it. Magic as far as spell wielding mages and undead raising necromancers, these are not minor things that would somehow not bear mentioning, being as they are pretty world-changing. We've got details through all the classes and their clothing, combined with the tapestries and books, and there is no mention of either of these things. Whether the lore is complete and more is just yet to be revealed to us or it is still being written, we will have to wait and see. If Tyron decides he wants these things, then being the final authority on the lore, they can be retconned in just as easily as not; this is EA, nothing is set in stone.
  25. The lore excludes magic and necromancy by virtue of the fact that neither is mentioned anywhere. This does not mean that I am against either of these features, or fishing, but necromantic fish would be crossing the line...
