I ran a Minecraft server for about five years, and it was pure vanilla the whole time. The only changes to the game were functions I wrote myself to add mini-games and other amenities. I felt at the time that the vanilla experience was the one true way to play, for the same We Die Like Men ethic. Once I abandoned the Minecraft server and started a Vintage Story server, I loosened my take on mods because the ones the players requested really did enhance the game. We tended to start new worlds with Knapster, Resin on All Sides, Primitive Survival and various animal mods. While it was still up to date, we added the Outlaw mod at some point. That was my favorite. I initially hated the idea of Knapster, but like an addictive drug, it was hard to give up once I grew used to the automation. Regards, ArrayPointer

I have to say, this is the second post of yours I've read, and the second time I've been impressed at your accuracy in terms of expression. Being astute enough to identify the genuine problem is a useful talent indeed. Well done. The notion of fairness can be perplexing in our shared construct. I have some practical ideas regarding the realities of living on this planet, but they are unsolicited at the moment. Regards, ArrayPointer

I would like to chime in with several other posters here, and suggest the addition of non-animal, non-lore hostiles. The Outlaw Mod, when it's updated, is a good basic example of what I'd love to see as a part of the vanilla game that you could activate during initial settings for world creation. I can just imagine how much fun Homo Sapiens mode would be with numerous factions of humanoid foes! It's probably all I would play after completing the most recent story locations in Standard mode. Thank you for your time. Regards, ArrayPointer

Christian Community - RP Low Fantasy Server - V 1.21.6
ArrayPointer replied to TheCatDied's topic in Multiplayer
I don't see why anyone would object to an atheist or agnostic community when those are already in the considerable majority in the gaming world, and often assumed by default. The lack of objection for a Christian server does feel oddly surprising for that reason but then again, I've noticed a relative absence of toxicity in the Vintage Story gamer world. Hopefully it will remain that way. Regards, ArrayPointer -
Same here. I think it's the movement plus the proportional size that creates the revulsion. Even a tiny spider in real life moving like that would be disturbing albeit non-threatening. The developers played an ace with that animation.

Loved your thought provoking post, and yes, absolutely. Before I continue, I will admit that when I was a much younger man, I thought work was a drudgery to suffer through. It took years of 'toil' for me to understand that without the regularity of work, existence loses vital comparative dynamics. But that has nothing to do with Vintage Story. Your observations remind me of when I used to play Minecraft and I attempted to explain to non-players what the draw was. I always defaulted to some version of, "It's like a digital Eden." Even more so with Vintage Story. I completely agree about the autonomy. One way it was particularly satisfying was the first time I played either game, the sounds of monsters outside my primitive hut made me feel ironically cozy. The knowledge that danger was all around me but I was shielded by one layer of impenetrable dirt was gratifying. In these sorts of survival games, the perfection of the cubic meter blocks is a visceral plus for me rather than an aesthetic minus. In both games, all of it works together to immerse me to the point where I can better suspend my disbelief and more easily imagine I'm actually in the virtual world. Vintage Story adds considerable additional realism that makes the experience even more convincing. The first game that made me feel that immersion was Myst, back in '95 or '96 I think (I waited until it was in the bargain bin). The next one after that was the original Tomb Raider. Up until Vintage Story, the game that gave me the strongest feelings of immersion was the original Unreal and its expansion, together now referred to as Unreal Gold. What a campaign! Locusts The way locusts move still creeps me out to no end. They seem more like six-legged glowing spiders. I distinctly recall my first encounter with locusts and the collection of purple bricks I crapped as I ran from them. I no longer run from the normal locusts, but every time I bump into the saw-tailed scorpion-like variant, I still jump like I sat on a megawatt electrode. Regards, ArrayPointer

Anybody else finding the Temporal Storms too difficult?
ArrayPointer replied to Mourning Wood's topic in Discussion
Indeed. I remember the first time I played in multiplayer and traded with a Malefactor player for a sling. Sling + dirt elevator = piece of cake combat. Strategic tactics are not cheesy, they are resourceful if they utilize existing game physics without creative cheats. Regards, ArrayPointer -
Linux distros/configurations under which VS is known to run
ArrayPointer replied to skol's topic in Discussion
This distro setup may already appear somewhere in this thread, but here goes anyway. I only recently moved to MX Linux, after successfully enjoying Vintage Story on Manjaro for the last two years. Distro / Kernel release : MX Linux 23 / 6.1.0-29-amd64 (64-bit) Mono / .NET package version : Does Not Apply (see below) Graphics driver version : NVIDIA Driver Version 535.216.03 Works for client, mp server or both : Tested successfully as client Installation method used : Flatpak (download file at https://flathub.org/apps/at.vintagestory.VintageStory) Hacks (if needed) : at bash prompt: flatpak --user install /home/[user]/Downloads/at.vintagestory.VintageStory.flatpakref I rarely use Flatpak applications, but thankfully the VS developers provided that option because when I moved to MX Linux from Manjaro, Dotnet installation proved to be too arcane (in MX Linux) to bother continuing to try and hack it. Manjaro's dotnet installation was a breeze. Not sure why a popular OS like MX doesn't make it just as easy. I prefer to avoid non-standard repositories. -
I haven't posted in quite a while, but this caught my negative attention. FYI: Every day at work, and I mean every day at work, I tell at least one customer about Vintage Story, but more typically several. This has been going on for over two years now since I started playing. We needn't start a virtue signaling contest for who is Vintage Story's greatest fan, but I'd certainly be in the top 50 as a conservative estimate. That being said, I HATE parkour, no matter where I encounter it. I actively avoid purchasing any game that prominently features parkour, no matter how stellar the reviews. I hate precise jumping so much that while everyone else was buzzing about how addictive Mario Bros. was back on the NES, I found the game about as enjoyable as ramming my shin against an open dishwasher door. 2D or 3D doesn't matter to me, I hate them all. Yes, I am only one man, one voice, one opinion. I suspect there may be fans of escaping fall-damage-death by gad-flapping that reside in the ever-growing population of Vintage Story players. I already acknowledge in advance that my opinion doesn't dictate the design decisions of the highly talented crew who develop the game. But for Pete's sake, one of the reasons why I love realistic and immersive 3D games like Vintage Story is because they are not arcade games. This in no way diminishes my overwhelming anticipation of the 1.20 stable release. I will simply resign myself to LadyWYT's solution of using creative to skip through extended parkour passages. I thought I was deleting my most recent response (in order to rewrite it) and somehow I was granted the power to delete the entire thread. That was definitely not my intention. I now see that the person who starts the thread has moderator status for that thread. Didn't know that. I was going to respond to Streetwind's last post with a nod and a thank you, and I accidentally deleted the whole thread. No bueno. Regards, ArrayPointer

Decided to backup the server and try wipeinfo before I received an answer. It worked exactly as I hoped; removed only personal inventory and character info. Land claims and waypoints were left intact, though I did have to use a temporal gear to restore my spawn point. Perhaps the personal spawn point was the "etc." in the wiki. As I was afforded the opportunity to create my character again, I don't know for sure but I'm assuming all other world related player stats, like number of deaths, have been reset as well, but at this point I don't see any adverse effects. Hello, Simple question: what is the complete list of things that wipedata erases besides inventory, skin and class? The wiki says "...entire inventory, skin/class etc.." which implies there might be other attributes or items affected. I ask because I've always regretted goofing up my skin at the start of my server world, and though I've tested wipedata in a disposable single player world, I wanted to make sure that it won't do something in the server world to my character (or other items) that I didn't anticipate. One thing that comes to mind is perhaps any land claims. Thank you. Regards, ArrayPointer

Our Valamigos server, while nowhere near as grand in scope as the Stoneworks Minecraft Server, experiences no lag due to me managing the box at home on a gigabit connection (both ways) and maxed out RAM. I advertised it in the VS Multiplayer forum on October 20th of this year. We're still looking for a few more new players. I hadn't envisioned a civilization style world, but with 1,048,576 square meters in geography, it's highly likely to suffice for those seeking expansive creation. Our server is PVE with land claiming however, so I'm not sure if that is appropriate for a Stoneworks style player. Regards, ArrayPointer

Hello everyone! The Valamigos private server is now available for a few new players. We're running version 1.18.8 because it's been very stable and we're planning on waiting until 1.19 to update again. Our current (and likely permanent) world is in Year 2, and the date at the time of this post is May 12. We've all been playing Vintage Story for a little over a year. My brother and I are typically on the server daily, though usually not at the same time. Other family members show up now and then. We thought it might be fun to have more activity in the world, a chance to see the creative talents of others as they build their bases, etc. We don't have any restrictions of where you go to settle, but it would be more interactive if you weren't too far away from the world spawn location. We have a Discord channel, but only use it once in a while. Our world is family friendly, so language and subject matter should be appropriate for pre-teens. Valamigos is a cooperative PvE server, and we all use land claiming for our individual real estate. We also allow land claiming for any translocators you discover and wish to control. We're very good about sleeping through the night if someone needs it, unless we're doing something time sensitive like baking pies, smithing, etc. We run a white list, so if you join I'll need your exact player name in advance. If you're a veteran looking for a new multiplayer world to explore, or if you're a new player trying to find a server that's not populated with malefactors, you're welcome here. Regardless of your experience, we only seek players who seriously love the game. Once we reach a certain number of players, we're going to suspend this invitation, and I will notify everyone via this thread. ------------------ Valamigos settings are all default except for: Inventory is retained at death. Months are 30 days long. Tree sapling growth is set to 1x. ProPick Node Search Radius is 6 blocks. Temporal gear respawn uses are set to infinite. Polar-Equator Distance is 100,000 blocks. Surface copper deposit frequency is uncommon. Surface tin deposit frequency is rare. Class exclusive recipes are turned off. Fire spread is set to off. ------------------ The mods we're currently using on the server are: Primitive Survival Kreatures and Kritters Wolf Taming Pet AI Fauna of the Stone Age: Pantherinae Resin On All sides ------------------ If this sounds like a server you'd like to play on, please direct message me and allow 24-48 hours for a response.
