With "Workbench expansion" presumably dead and "Chisel Tools" being a bit too powerful and overcluttered I think it's time to revive this suggestion.

Any kind of copying possibility would be an immense help.

The player shouldn't be able to just copy paste stuff, as useful as it is. its like the water bucket, its nice that it just dumps out infinite water but should it? vintage story makes you get hands on knapping and forging tools bit by bit, it wouldn't fit within the game to just copy paste something. I could see the possibility for an npc that you give a chiseled block to and give him the raw material and say remake this, or remake this mirrored and come back in a bit after paying for the services. as useful as copy paste is for chiseled blocks its antithetical to the games design aesthetic for how the player interacts with the world.

I came here searching because I wanted the same thing. Yesterday, I was playing with chiseling as I hadn't done much before. I started making contours for a large log cabin style house made out of quarter logs. After about 8-12 blocks, that was enough. No way am I spending that kind of time, but I think it would be cool to be able to continue that shape if it didn't take so long.

I like the NPC idea, and the possibility of dupe or mirror.

I had an alternative thought like a contour gauge, form following mechanical router type machine. You chisel the block you want to replicate. It goes in an input slot. A raw materials (unchiseled) slot and finally an output (chiseled) slot. Hook the machine up to mechanical power like a quern and it converts the blocks over time.

If this is still too OP, perhaps there's a tool head slot for a chisel that wears out over time. Maybe require 2 input blocks, the one to be duped (to capture the block's orientation) and a second analogous to a die or a master. Making a die/master block could require some special materials like resin and/or a process akin to a pit kiln. Perhaps oriented blocks that are in the same family could be inputs for the same family (e.g. chiseled a birch log, but duping into an oak log).

While probably too advanced to be vanilla and within lore, it seems like it would at least fit in the mechanic goals of the game to automate creation of blocks you want to duplicate.

I'm personally in favor of this being a vanilla feature. In my opinion, I believe it can be done in a way that wouldn't be against Vintage Story's game design. I think the Workbench mod does this well. You have to use resources to copy a chisel block, it has a delay, and it takes away chisel durability. Even with copying, it still takes many, many hours of hard work to chisel builds. But if the way the workbench does it is still too powerful, perhaps copying chiseled blocks can be automated somehow with mechanical power? I know more tasks to be automated by mechanical power is on the roadmap.

Here's some examples of chiseled builds that still took a massive amount of time to create, even with copying with the Workbench mod. The builder mentioned all the time and effort that went into these projects. So even if this becomes a vanilla feature, I don't see it taking away from Vintage Story's game design philosophy of things taking time and effort to create / complete.

I'm sure I'm not alone here. Many people who chisel regularly in this game use mods like the Workbench mod, and would love to see a vanilla way to do this in survival. @Tyron sorry for the ping, but I'm curious. Would you be willing to give the community a yes or no on if this will ever make it into the game in the future? Or is it still up in the air? And thank you for all the hard work you and the team put into Vintage Story! 🙂
