Facethief Posted November 9, 2025 Report Posted November 9, 2025 What land cover percentage do you use? The default 97.5-or-whatever%, or a lower number? 2

hstone32 Posted November 10, 2025 Report Posted November 10, 2025 I just built my own first sailboat yesterday. Wish I did it earlier; they're not as expenstve as I thought. 2
Alonso7 Posted November 11, 2025 Report Posted November 11, 2025 The Vanilla generation has improved a lot. If you play on older servers, you can see just how bad it used to be. But it's still not great. In some regions, you can clearly see the noise algorithms they use. Continents are oddly shaped and too big, with almost no oceans and no rivers (hopefully coming in 1.22). Mountains look cartoonish, and so on. Vintage Story is not like Minecraft. I think there should be a few continents (3-10), with only one equator and one north and south pole. In my opinion, this looping climate system is pointless. 3

I'm sure you can get something similar to that using the world generation options. In the current version though, we are only given I think just 3 semi-continuous degrees of freedom (landcover, lancover scale, and landform scale). I'm not sure it's possible to guarantee a certain number of land masses, or what the challenges would be to implementing such an option. Maybe if they added an option for adjusting landcover distribution slant, where a value of 100 represents an even distribution of landcover across the whole world, and a value of 10 represents a world where one standard deviation of landcover is distributed over only 10% of the surface of the world. 1
Broccoli Clock Posted November 11, 2025 Report Posted November 11, 2025 I spent about 800 hours in game before I realised there was salt water (and thus an ocean). It seems crazy that all this time I'd spent in game I wasn't aware of it. Every single water source I found, and I found some huge lakes, were fresh water. It just never occurred to me that all water wasn't fresh. Roll around the update to 1.21, and my new world for that was a water world (created using world gen + some mods) as I wanted to try out the big sailboat. I spawn in, set up a basic base on an island, go to plant my crops next to the water only to be told they would be damaged by sea water. I was a little taken back, when did this game have sea water? I dropped onto here asking, "I guess the update added seawater, are there sea water resistant plants to go along with this addition?". You can imagine my embarrassment when someone replied (and thanks to them, although I forget the username) saying, "there's always been seawater in the game, it's been in for ages". How can I spent so loooong in a game, like literally hundreds of hours, and not know that oceans existed? 1

Tyron worked for years just to get what we have now, indicating the difficulty in terrain generation. Nevermind that his mod for MC (VintageCraft) was based on upgrading MC terrain generataion which earned him a spot on the Hytale team before he started Anego in 2016. 2
Thorfinn Posted November 13, 2025 Report Posted November 13, 2025 I think you could probably fairly easily get close to a small number of huge continents, but I think most people would hate it -- go through landforms.json and increase all sizes by 1000x or so. But it would make more realistically sized landforms. Great Plains would go on for 100s of thousands of blocks, i.e. many 100s of kilometers. People are already complaining about not having everything within 1 or 2 kms.

While the mods did what they advertised and made the terrain a lot more realistic...it also made the game pretty boring, since there was no longer any real variety in the landscape. While the current terrain in VS might not be ultra realistic, it's still believable while offering enough variation as to not become dull. Though one feature I would like to see, is perhaps some proper plains regions. We do sort of have them now, but they do seem to get covered in brush frequently. Not that I would call Kansas-style grassland the most exciting landscape, but it does have a certain minimalist charm that I find fascinating, since I'm used to mountains, hills, and forests.
