I was thinking about barrels recently and I came to the conclusion that they are quite shallow when it comes to their mechanics. Right now you seal them by pressing a button and they unseal themselves, and I don't think this matches the Vintage Story feeling at all.

So I've got some suggestions for how they could work.

  1. First of all, replacing the seal button with the actual need to use planks or some kind of lid to seal them would be nice. We can keep their menu, just let's not use a boring button to seal them.
  2. If they are sealed, we should be able to move them in the backpack slots, just like with beehives. When moving them, placing them in any direction would be so cool (vertical or horizontal).
  3. After the process inside them is finished, they should remain sealed until we unseal them manually using some tool or without one to not make things annoying.
  4. If a barrel contains a drinking liquid (or any liquid, if feeling generous) and the barrel is placed horizontally, we could use a new item - a tap - to attach it to the barrel (holding a tap and a hammer in the offhand) to extract the liquid from inside. Going for that tavern with beverages vibe.
  5. If you want to make it extra realistic and nice, we could have some markings or notes added after sealing the barrel, with information about its contents and the date of sealing.

What do you think about the ideas?

Edit: I just remembered that we are getting a crowbar, so we could use it to unseal the barrels.

I've previously suggested that barrels should require 9 boards to make instead of 3, as they feel very cheap at the moment.  I like the other ideas as well.

Yeah I agree, you can easily make them en masse

I like all of these ideas.

It would be great if we could reuse lids.

Could maybe require some additional beeswax or resin to seal them.

Both ideas are cool

I like it. It's the kind of change that pushes more toward realism, without getting so caught up in it that it becomes tedious.

Though I would perhaps add a recipe for a larger barrel that utilizes more boards and a couple of metal hoops. Then the player can have some better options for storing liquids en masse.

Plus we’d have another use for the shield hoops then.

Absolutely loving this idea, being a barrel maker (cooper) was such a prolific job that it's now one of the most common names in English. More of a focus on making barrels, the resources that go into them, and things to do with them would be fantastic.

I've always felt the 3 planks+4 sticks thing to be way too minimal. Maybe even update to a small barrel that needs planks & rope, then the larger one with planks & hoops.

Either way, an absolute a tier suggestion for immersion.
