TUNASUB Posted July 16 Report Posted July 16 I read soimewhere that the largerthe lake the larger the fish population. Every now and then i could even spot some fish swimming around in lakes. As you can see here, next to my starter base theres a ton of Fish swimming around. Is this some kind of indicator that i can keep fishing this pond? This lake isnt very large and i already pulled out 5 Fish a while ago. I dont wanna overfish this place as its planmned as my emergency food bank 1
Rainbow Fresh Posted July 16 Report Posted July 16 As far as I know that isn't a really reliable indicator for the fish population. Bodies of water have two sets of fish, those that visibly, physically roam the pond and the "hidden stock", which is what fishing usually pulls from if no real fish is close enough to bite. So while yes, technically there are always atleast the visible amount of physical fish left available for fishing, how much fish in general the pond has is and remains a hidden number. 1
Averixus Posted July 17 Report Posted July 17 Rainbow Fresh is right, there are two completely independent fish populations in any given body of water - the swimming entities you can see, and the invisible stock. Any fish you can see swimming in the world can be caught (with the right bait). The entities will spawn randomly over time according to their local distribution and population cap. So the amount of fishing you do has no effect on the entity spawn rate other than by lowering the population to allow more to spawn. The level of invisible stock is tracked in 8x8x8 block volumes. Every volume can provide a maximum of 12 fish, and after that point it's depleted and won't provide anything more. Once 14 days have passed since the last fish was caught, the stock will instantly be restored back to full again. There are no visible indicators of any of this, so you'll only know by trial and error or by keeping very precise track of what you catch and where. 1

So technically i could just spear fish all the Fish i see roaming around and wouldnt run into issues of starvin g the lake?

Theoretically spearfishing should no longer be possible, as with the introduction of rod fishing their behavior was changed to supposedly "nothing personal kid" you when attempting to physically hit them.

However only when you throw spears. You cant poke em in water. But if you corner them and approch from behind just chuck a spear of your choice and its a one hit kill 1

Just to confirm what the other user said, spearfishing still works, you just have to yeet the spear. I like it.
Echo Weaver Posted July 20 Report Posted July 20 What's the justification for removing the old kind of spear fishing? That's a valid form of real-life fishing.

Fish flee if the player tries to hit them in melee, probably to prompt the player to use a fishing pole and bait to fish the "proper" way. Projectile weapons probably weren't accounted for since there's probably not a lot of people that go around shooting at fish.

Then I enter the scene, recurve bow & stack of arrows at the ready, jumping into the lake to take the pike on in ranged combat like it's Age of Empires I have had a lot of luck with both thrown spears and bow for fishing. If I ever wanna stock up on salted fish for a long trip that's usually how I do it. 2

I'm surprise they eliminated the ability to spear fish. It's a legitimate real-life way to fish.
