Echo Weaver Posted July 24 Report Posted July 24 I'm back after a break of about 9 months. I'm looking for a guide on the mechanics of waterwheels and rapids. Did someone put something together, either Anego itself or a fan? I haven't found one searching on obvious keywords in the forum.
Maelstrom Posted July 24 Report Posted July 24 Welcome back! I was wonderin' where you'd gone off to and feared you had dropped of the edge of the world. I've seen a few bits and bobs here and there. Pretty much you can channel the water just like normal water. Maximum power is achieved from having five blocks of water flowing over the water wheel - basically drop the water over the uphill side of the water wheel. And you'll need iron to make the mechanisms necessary. 1
Rainbow Fresh Posted July 24 Report Posted July 24 That's about it. Rapids are water but faster and louder. They cannot be moved by bucket. They do not split into multiple blocks when flowing down and are all around a pain to utilize for anything more than putting a single water wheel directly underneath. If I'm not mistaken, to really drive the point home the water stream of a rapids source going through a waterwheel comes out as normal water on the other side so even chaining is not possible. The rapids water flows faster and only can travel 3 blocks far. Whaterwheels require the iron age to produce and fulfil the sole role of being a more stable source of mechanical power than the windmill. Assuming you have rapids nearby. Which in many situations may mean you still just gotta stick with windmills. Or rather "a windmill" as building multiple too close to eachother has been nerfed aswell as tradeoff for their being an iron tier large windmill variant now.

I think the actual immediate cause was that my kid and I struck out trying to find the entrance to the Resonance Archives in our "forever world" -- this might be because the world started in 1.19. I tend to be stubborn and didn't want to start over. I know that placing the Resonance Archives got kinda screwy for some upgraded worlds. At any rate, I spent way too much time trying to solve the problem in-game. By the time I was ready to go to spectator mode to scope it out, I was ready for a break. I upgraded my game, upgraded the mods, and went into spectator to find the entrance yesterday. I'm going to post a screenshot. I think it's pretty funny. A couple of lovely folks took over my mods. Only one really needs attention. I'm not quite ready for that yet 2
pippo_ Posted August 3 Report Posted August 3 Are you able to move flowing water using a large above ground channel, built from wood and stone? Is there a limit to how far it could go? Would like to know before I invest all the materials into it.

So if you build a staircase-canal that drops 1 block every 4 blocks you can transport the rapid away from its origin. With this unfavorable ratio of vertical-to-horizontal distance your options will be very much still limited though, unless you happen to come across a rapid source at the highest top of a build-height mountain. Single waterwheel is pretty strong, if powered by 5 active blocks, it can run three geared up helve hammers at once.

Rapids flow the same six block distance as regular water, so although it is limited it's not quite that limited. They also commonly spawn very high up, and are easy to spot on the map (look for dark squiggly lines that don't flow into a larger pool) so finding a reasonable base location which has access to one or even two isn't usually all that difficult. 1

Rapids reach less than regular water, I have a stream under the waterwheel, that works only for regular water, while rapid water stops.

I just checked and it seems to actually be the same distance as normal water. I could have sworn it was way shorter when I tried to move the darn thing to my base. 1
