Rooms have a max interior size of 14x14x14, so if it's any larger than that then it won't count as a room. You can use the command /debug rooms hi to check if it counts as a valid room (it will highlight green if it does)

If it's too big, you may need to wall part off and put in a door/trapdoor.

Chiseling too much of the wrong thing will also cause it to not count as a room without a mod to mitigate that.

Things that can invalidate a room.

1. Too big (as mentioned)
2. Chiseled blocks that have less than 50% of the remaining voxels (basically a wall needs to be at least a slab worth of voxels)
3. Any holes in the wall/ceiling.
4. Shingle blocks.  This may have been fixed, but shingle blocks in the past haven't counted as insulating blocks.  Best practice is to put full blocks under shingle blocks.

The Status HUD mod is really useful for telling you if you're in a cellar or room.  It's visually appealing :)

I'll have to try that mod. My must have is HUD Clock, the modern theme looks nice and has most of the info available at a glance, but seeing light levels and hunger rates would be useful with the Status HUD.
