Meiiolri Posted September 4 Report Posted September 4 I am looking for ways to acquire leather faster qnd sooner before the mid way point in game. Tin bronze anvil, barrels, buckets, lime water, weak tanin, strong tanin. Waiting 5-6 days to the whole processes to occur is hurdle on itself and I mostly find my time spent hammering ingots and sleeping. I might be doing something partially wrong since the leather i produce doesn't last for long and I find lack of it and the whole process of waiting taxing. The second point is the length of the season, what acually is affected by the length? My first real save I set up length to 30 days per season aka 24 hours. Besides the longer winter and around 50 real hours before the winter starts, the slower crops growth what else is affected?
Rainbow Fresh Posted September 4 Report Posted September 4 (edited) Crop growth is about the only thing natively tied to the days per month as it's calculated in month it takes to grow. Most everything else is based on a fixed time in days/hours. So increasing the length of month means crops grow slower (the same amount of months as before but months are more days) while hunger drains and food spoils "faster" (the same amount of fixed hours meaning food lasts shorter in terms of years). You might want to adjust the spoil rate in accordance. To my knowledge, the time recipes take (e.g. the amount of hours it takes to seal leather in a barrel) is not changeable without mods overwriting the recipe data. So without mods you won't be able to get leather "faster", and "earlier" would make not much sense as all you need for leather is hunting (doable in stone age), lime (based on worldgen RNG, not time) and copper (which is not the mid way point of the game by any metric). Demoncyborg Posted September 4 Report Posted September 4 ignore this if it's what you're already doing- but my advice to vanilla-y "speed up" leather is by making ridiculous amounts of tannin ahead of time and in bulk so the only waiting is the barrel timers, then have multiple 'loads' of leather going through each step, that way it's harder to fall short, and gives a bit more to do in the interim :3 4

By mid way point I meant more so tin bronze, bismuth bronze, black bronze. Since well making copper anvil in itself fells and is wasteful. When with a bit of tin you can have better.

Granted if you are blessed with finding surface tin immediately going for tin bronze is a good idea. Other than that though, you get the materials of the copper anvil back if you spend a copper+ chisel after upgrading to bronze and, if need be, you can further break down the ingots you get back into bits to resmelt into bronze. So I wouldn't consider it that big of a waste when getting that anvil and making a saw unlocks so much more of the game. 2

As soon as I can get barrels I start filling them with tannin and any lime I can get my hands on. I usually have at minimum three barrels of each liquid available at any time. 2
LadyWYT Posted September 4 Report Posted September 4 https://mods.vintagestory.at/ancienttoolsfork This mod adds a way to make leather without the need for tannin, borax, or lime. It's still a time-consuming process, but as long as you have a barrel(or something that serves the same function) you can make leather. Clayworks adds a clay barrel, but that mod also adds a lot more than just that and adds a drying requirement to clay items before firing, so you may or may not be interested in that mod. 1 hour ago, Meiiolri said: Waiting 5-6 days to the whole processes to occur is hurdle on itself Unfortunately there's no way to really speed up this process in the vanilla game. Each batch of leather is still going to take around 6 days to process, so the only way to acquire it at a faster rate is to run multiple batches at once.
Zaph42nd Posted September 4 Report Posted September 4 Bulk tannin production is the way to go for mass-producing leather, not really any easy-ways to produce till you've got a bunch of barrels crafted. I'll also echo others and say ancient tools is worthwhile for leather making, especially fits in well for mid-game leather making...
Mushroomancer Posted September 4 Report Posted September 4 Having been the dedicated leather maker a couple times now on servers, I usually find that setting up tannin as early as possible is the best way forward. Don't wait until you have hides to process. The only issue with this is that depending on your start, finding lime can be a bit of a pain. Either way, if you're worried about gathering lime en masse, I find hunting down a desert biome and gathering boulders is easily the fastest way to fill up inventory. Overall, leather is the kind of thing it's best to work on early, and passively rather than when you need it because otherwise you're going to be stuck waiting a bit which is always its own small suffering. Unfortunately not something that's easy to consider the first time you're getting to the point that you need it. 1

Wish we could make tanning pits before barrels. Like the good old times. Dig a pit fill it with clay drop skins cure them with the usuall process 1
Mushroomancer Posted September 4 Report Posted September 4 It would honestly be nice to see more diverse tanning methods in general. 1
