I have to agree with Dark Thoughts. Reading through the pre-1.21 notes was a bit overwhelming, so many fixes and changes. Welcome of course, but until we get to a release candidate and some hours behind the mouse I find it very hard to project more than some basic stuff others have covered like fishing. Good times for sure!

Sounds good so far, I am waiting for at least the RC version to muck around myself. The bears and wolves were more annoying wrt their "auto-attacks", so if that is solved, fine. It can always be tweaked later if too much. As an aside, wolves should be afraid if you have an active torch and it would be nice to pull a Weathertop Aragorn with one as needed IMO. Animals really don't like fire (yes, it's not Earth- got it). I am OK with the healing only working when standing still. If the wound code gets more sophisticated in the future, perhaps a simple cloth bandage or rag could be applied on extremities while walking, but that's an awful lot of contingencies. With the new bear and wolf code, maybe it will pan out OK. Just had a thought; maybe in the future wolves and bears would retain a "hunger ticker" that would affect their aggressiveness as it waxed and waned between snacks. Might be interesting and keep us all on our toes! Excited for all the new stuff!

If you haven't already RubyxD, go back to the Graphics tab and mouse-over all the settings and re-evaluate what you have set. Perhaps setting the Preset to a lower quality and then bit by bit inching settings up. I know it's a PITA, but troubleshooting always is on these things. Otherwise, do like me and deal with it until the game and GPU drivers meet in a happy place!

It took me a few tries at different stuff to get a noticeable improvement. Setting the Optimize RAM off outside the game was the biggest for me, I see it didn't help you. I do still have the occasional big stutter (~ 1/2 second), but it is no where near as common. I would say keep trying different settings and see if any make a difference. I have a really current PC built in Feb '25, so my example may not fit well. What resolution are you running VS at on your 4K monitor? Not sure what else to try off hand. Good luck!

So I have noticed while playing VS (88hrs) that I experience a lot of wildlife chuffs/snorts/grunts - whatever name for it you wish to use, but here is my issue. The vast majority of the time I can whip around and scan the area, yet there are no deer or moose anywhere. Granted, they might be hunkered down on the ground, but that would be rather odd, most deer are alert and upright ready to bolt when they snort at you. Anyway, am I the only one who thinks the snorting is not quite right? Either the sound is carrying too far or it's happening when no deer is around in my limited experience. I know VS sounds are not always great- you can eat, move and the crunching sound stays behind you where you initiated the "eat" action. Spooky and disorienting. I wonder if the same is happening with the deer/moose snorting. Thoughts?

Odd Bugs, Assuming It's Due To Updating Versions.

Yeah, no background stuff at all. I am lucky that I don't tend to use them, but I think a good chunk of folks forget they have "stuff" churning away in the background. Not saying that is your particular issue Rex, but it is worth a look. Discord and other apps are notorious for "just keeping you informed... really!" -
I thought about putting a mini-review up the other week, but with 76 hours so far I still want to do a few things. First off, great post Silrana, I feel much the same as I turn 61 on June 3rd this year. I have two games that I have around five hours each in so far, but I find that I enjoy generating worlds and then seeing what appears, puttering about for a while and either deleting it if I wasn't particularly inspired or saving it for later. Part of the beauty of Vintage Story is with a handful of mods it has nearly endless possibilities for me and that really calls back to my childhood, reading books and broadening my imagination. I used to catch hell as a grade schooler for "daydreaming" too much. I distinctly remember in 5th grade getting the quarterly Scholastic Book pamphlet and seeing The Hobbit, getting excited and going home and asking my mother for the change needed to buy it. Sadly I don't have that copy anymore, but it launched my lifelong entry into who I am and why I am that way. Vintage Story is pretty special for me, and what is even better is that Tyron & Co. are barely getting rolling. Think about that, knowing what we already have in 1.20. Exciting times!

I think the biggest help at least in the long-term is to work on training your eyes to passively scan the sides and tops of soil blocks as you scoot through your world. It does take some persistence and perseverance though. I am blessed with an overactive perception for the mundane IRL, which ends up being both a blessing and a curse at times. It's worth the time and at least at first turning on the full color map in my book.

While I haven't seen bowtorns or shivers inside my home yet, I am convinced the devious and ominous rifts are following me around- watching, always watching. Particularly if you spend a lot of time around your base 2 or 3 will spawn nearby, just in case you weren't paranoid enough it seems(!)

Setting Optimize RAM in the config file to zero does appear to help quite a bit. I can't say all the large stutters (including audio stop) have gone away, but it is better than it was for me. I will keep trying things.

I agree with Maelstrom here. No one at Anego Studios is "leaving" the game like this current build. I am currently vexed with Boars as the telltale squeal of piglets (snort, snort!) puts an extra charge in my shorts and yeah, there is a whole thread on combat redux, etc. This stuff takes time and I am certain that Tyron has an outline, but things go sideways a lot in programming, so as they said in "Battle of Britain", I'll leave strategy for those with egg on their hats. I can say much the same regarding 7 Days to Die. The Huenink brothers get flack continuously, but it is their game and they can choose to develop it as they like. I don't see Vintage Story evolving all that much different. While one hopes it won't involve a decade-long Alpha/Beta, I have made peace with it all. You know what? They only charged me once for 7DTD and The Long Dark and both are still going strong with independent studios and small teams. Maybe, just maybe they are all on to something? It certainly won't come in the player base's preferred timeframe, but Anego will get there.

Thanks YK, I will give it a shot today. Welp, no joy. I still have large single stutters about once a minute or so.

I was wondering if I was the only one. Big, large skip stutters with latest stable patch about every minute, give or take. I have tried turning down a few higher fps settings to no avail (this wasn't necessary with previous stable patch). Edit: Noticing this is an older report thread, but I just started having this issue this week (April 20th, 2025). Previously the game ran outstanding with quite high settings except for shadows (med) and God Rays (off). As of 4/27: I played the game for a couple hours and the frequency of the big stutters has abated somewhat; at least it seemed like it was happening less. Not sure if a number of storms that happened to my character in a short timeframe had anything to do with things. Doing some more testing today. CPU: Ryzen 7 9800X3D GPU: AMD RX 7900XTX w/24GB RAM: 64GB DDR5 Windows 11 Pro on NVME SSD 4th gen drive.

Do we really need a combat overhaul? What are your opinions on it?

I think you just summed up the last decade in America my friend. -

As a new-ish player of Vintage Story, I am all for any improvements the team could make to combat that will streamline the feeling of the flow and cause & effect for the player. Combat gets a bit wonkish when mobs get inside your arm swing range and a few other things (of which I do not understand). I don't want any changes to make it easier to tank or ignore combat. To me, the hallmark of VS is the limited responses (at least early on) of fight or flight. If combat could somehow feel better as the player w/o nerfing the experience and inherent difficulty we have now I would be a happy camper. I am still in baby steps learning to deal with how to spend my time efficiently while still surviving in the beginning and I think that's great! The last thing I want (and I imagine the Devs too) would be for Vintage Story to cave and turn into a mealy mush of a game that doesn't stand its ground on intended experience. It's OK if your game is not for everyone and that should be celebrated. -
Eh, when it's done is fine for me- this year or next. I have so many games and so little time to begin with... Thanks for all the hard work this year Tyron & Co.
