OP: I have no interest in TP storms either. Just turn it off in the settings. done

I do not think the solution to 'no temporal storms' is 'not having any ruins, traders, translocators'. The solution is just to turn off that option in the settings.

Guide: Multiple Parallel Installations of Vintage Story
CastIronFabric replied to Streetwind's topic in Guides
Thanks! I was not thrown off by the term 'auto-updater' I was just hyper/triple checking so to speak. Even though I will back up this save it still feels like I am changing a tire for the first time with the save file right under the wheel, just gotta get er right. -
I guess the core of what I am saying in summary is if the best selling game of all time (minecraft or before it the sims) had a story would sales go up or down. If neither, then that might be a data point developers might want to ponder over before spending millions of dollars on voice acting. Even if the story itself was really good.
-
I understand that argument and that issue exists in movies and films as well. My view is like I mentioned but worth mentioning again. When a book, show or movie is extremely good you lose all sense of time and are hyper focused on the narrative being told, every small detail resonates and often can lead to important things later on. So again, super duper extremely duper super hyper focus, is what happens when a good story is being told. I have seen really good movies in which ONE..literally ONE small facial expression is a major plot point but its only noticed if one is paying 100% attention for around 40 mins before it even happens. In fact one of my favorite movies of all time is called The Interview (1998) which last time I checked is no longer streaming anywhere. Anyway, the entire movie is 2 people talking for 2 hours and yet is it friggin brillant. Try doing that level of detail in a video game? Now, imagine having that good story with that level of detail and every 10 mins you stop the story and ask the audience to do something nearly completely different and disconnected and then as soon as they get into that flow you stop again and put them back into story mode. nope.

I think the only thing we have that can point to popularity of one game style over the other is sales figures. On that front my game style preference would represent the majority. If you look at the best selling video games of all time and even factor out games like Tetris its still mostly non narrative based titles like minecraft.
-
yeah so we are clearly polar opposites despite the fact that I played D&D starting in the 80s and basically on and off for decades. Its not the story that drove me. so it would be interesting to see those numbers on the population set. I just do not know how to do it reliably. I say that because a lot of the times what people self report and what they actually do are completely different. Its often not intentional its usually subconscious

small correction, from what I understand your login will still work if you are not connected to the internet. The main reason I would like it one Steam is so that I can use the pier to pier feature over the internet without having to create a complicated setup

we need a memo for this stuff. I thought, Team Speak? is that still a thing?

That is a good point. I take it a bit further though, I think video games are not a good medium for good narrative story telling full stop. I think one can take any video game story, turn it into a TV series and the story would have a better experience for the audience and the game would be better by extracting the story out of the game experience. I could write pages backing up my view with examples in our current era of gaming as well as traditional non electronic gaming going back thousands of years but maybe I shouldn't The very short version of my thesis is, if you are reading a really compelling book. Does the book become BETTER if someone interupts you every 20 mins? most likely not.

Let me try to be more concrete in what I am saying. I am saying I would like to see how many people think a game is better BECAUSE of the cutscenes and voice acting or if they would like the game just as much or maybe even more if it didnt have it. Industry likes to say 'our games sell well because..' but do they really know why people buy their games? I bet they really dont know for sure. I have games with cutscenes some voice acting and music but all of those things actually annoy me in all cases other than the NOLF series but I still bought the game. So for at least this consumer all the time and effort the developer spent on all those things ended up a complete waste of time. So I would think the industry would like to know how many people like me there are out there because the possibility is non zero that they might discover that their sales would not be impacted at all if they skipped all of those things despite how much people on the internet claim that they love those things which sometimes ends up not being actually true but rather a perception. make sense?

Just feels... inadequate compared to modpacks that involve TFC+
CastIronFabric replied to cAshewTheAce's topic in Discussion
understand you have to make your own cementation furnace and likely your own windmill gathering the materials yourself. -
I understand, but the reason I would like to see a survey on that is because I never watch a cutscene in my 40+ years of gaming other than if I have to or for No One Lives Forever series. It would be interesting to see if a game actually does better in sales because of cutscenes or if people are just being convinced that its important. Human psychology is shockingly malleable. It can even be a feedback loop, AAA game developers become convinced that narrative is important, they make a game with narrative, they sell to the public that the narrative is super awesome sauce then sales go up and the developer then gets confirmation bias and keeps going. All the while, minecraft that has no narrative becomes a best seller. That is what I am curious about such a study and why I think developers would be very vested in knowing if all the work they are doing is actually making a positive impact because voice acting and cut scenes aint cheap

I agree with the OP and yes I have been known to delete and restart a game if I can not find limestone or chalk. Actually the way I play now is just to start flying on day 1 until I find the right spot for me. I am not investing 200 hours in a location that I do not really care much for, nope no more of that.

well I do not know what the progression limit on the most popular block game of all time is (you know that other game) but at least for me it takes about 200 hours for me to get to steel. To be fair I do focus on multiple things at once and I have some mods Now I predict there will be replies to my observation claiming that they can get to steel in 20 hours but that is to be expected -
I would love to see a survey of gamers to find out how many gamers turn off music before playing and how many leave it on during a 4 hours play session. I would like to see the same basic thing done for cut scenes. I would hate for companies to spend a lot of time and resources on things that the majority of people ignore, that would suck!

I only have about 45 but the problem is upgrading when a new version of the game comes out which for my current world I really really really do not want to do. I like my world a ton, I have put in 200+ hours and I would like to bring it back up as is even decades from now.

How to stream the game on discord properly?
CastIronFabric replied to cAshewTheAce's topic in Questions
at least for me, I can only stream if I am in windowed mode. I think though that might because I have two monitors. I am not sure. -
I have success finding lots of surface copper on 'mineral based' biomes. Some do not and I honesty forget which ones dont but basically biome that does not have grass. I almost never pan for copper but then again I play on 'Explorer mode' so its not as expensive for me to run around.

Guide: Multiple Parallel Installations of Vintage Story
CastIronFabric replied to Streetwind's topic in Guides
I want to ask just to make sure I am super clear on this. If I copy the VintageStory folder and the VintageStory data folder and have my shortcut pointing to those copied folders and do not hit the auto update on that game instance that it will not update to a new version regardless of what I do with the uncopied version. I really really really super really..do not want this copied version of Vintage story to update at this time and all the game files for that version will be isolated using that VintageStory folder that has been copied. I know how to target the shortcuts, I have done that several times given different mod pack setup so on that part I am good I think. The reason this is super important for me is that even if I backup my game file I am not entirely sure I can revert safely to an older version of the game and if I can a lot (if not most) of the mods I am using will break. Thanks -
no, what I mean by 'builds' is the entire word. All the food that is attached to mods, all the objects attached to mods etc.
-
I already know how to set up two different data folders so that I can have different mod sets. I have read some posts regarding different VERSIONS of the game but this question is to double check my understanding and assumptions. I assume I would need to copy entire ENTIRE vintage story build, all folders to a different location with of course the shortcuts pointing correctly to said folders. Then I assume in the original setup I can update the game version and it will not affect my copied setup with the copied game files. I really do not want to lose my pre-v1.21.x builds Reason I want to do this is because I do not want to update all the mods to work with my previous build of the game. I might do that later but for now I just want to isolate it. thanks

200 hours later: the horrors persist, and i with them.
CastIronFabric replied to Galdor_Mithr's topic in Discussion
Steer clear of Rustborn Magic if performance is a concern. I would assume that mods that introduce new wildlife to the world would also be of concern but I have not validated that.
