I think a developer dedicating too much time in their day to explicitly look for ways to force a player into a gaming experience that they want them to do despite those players being actively engaged in trying to avoid that experience is to put if simply, creepy. I understand fully that there is a balance and its not an exclusive rule but in general the more time a developer spends in trying to force a experience players are trying to avoid the creepier it gets. Not to mention the simple fact of 'if one does not like the exploit, then one can simply not engage in it said exploit. Example: If one think blocking the portal is an exploit, then do not do it. Single player = obvious Multiplayer = who does this specific feature affect specifically? Unless its done at some large groups HQ does it affect anyone anyway?

1.22.0-pre.1 - Fishing, Mechanisms, Metalworking and More!

from my experience having done about at least 20 restarts (likely more) that is actually fairly normal and far from 'plain nonsense'. It CAN happen on some rolls, but for most roles is not super hard. -
I understand the multiplayer aspect but for this game specifically I really think we need to lean features in a direction that assumes people are respectful to the rules of any given server. Games that are actually pvp focused (like Darkfall online was) are a complete S Show when it comes to feature debates because everything has to be balance to an extreme and its super annoying. I think for this game we have to assume the larger majority of players are not going to be pvp and we should not be making decisions that affect everyone based on their needs. That is my view on this game specifically. Anyway, I think we are not in any strong disagreement on my point so fair enough, I just wanted to point it out is all

and added to that, this is why I am not a fan of developers changing existing mechanics too much once they have been established. That is one thing I am concerned with on the new update. I know I have argued that things like the spears is not as big of a deal as it seems but in general not a fan of changing existing established game mechanics too much. -

same here exactly. I think my first play through I panned more than I have ever since a bit more than a year now and likely about 20 restarts. I have an addiction to speed running early games to just shut off my mind and go. disclaimer: I am not saying I am good at early game, its just something I like to do in all games. -
to be clear I am making a general statement, I am not addressing any feature specifically nor am I praising or criticizing the developers themselves. its just when I read words like 'players could work around', that just makes me nervous because of my experience with that unmentioned game. Given this is not a pvp game inertly I think its best for a player to just not engage in a hack they think is cheeky to the their game experience and not worry about what other people are doing. it makes me uncomfortable honestly. In fact as a side note, Gabe Newel went into detail on this, their team on I think Half Life had this very discussion. At which point is a player 'work around' not actually a 'hack' but instead a creative solution to a presented challenge. not a cut and dry question to answer really in all cases
-
there is some truth to that, however what we are talking about here is different. I am not refering to the game experience/feature itself, I am talking about a developer putting in extra effort and work in forcing a player to do something that they may not want to do but killing every single work around they can think of. That is..well to be frank...creepy
-
I think there is some level of truth to that however I think in most cases the question I propose needs to be contemplated in deep mediation and taken seriously and not discounted before any 'work around a hack' features is installed. I know of a game that did this constantly until it just effectively killed the entire game for most players, the dev was just wanting to force everyone into a game experience that the community did not even want.

Rhadamant has what I would call a speed run to end game video series and I agree 100% with his statement (at least I think this is where I heard it). paraphrase: 'I need to run around and get all matters of materials and a lay of the land anyway I usually get 40 copper before I no longer need to do that so I rarely pann' Same here, sometimes I do for the last 5 or so but rarely ever, and I do restarts like a crack addict. -
so there is likely a lot of hacks a player can do for all kinds of various game play functions. I can not think of one off the top of my head but for the sake of example lets just use 'going into creative' as an example. If most players really did not like clay forming they would go into creative and just spawn the clay items. if most players were engaged by such a feature then they would not go into creative. The important word here being 'most' So, going back to the subject if most players take an advantage of a method to avoid interacting with an intended feature then logically that means most players are uninterested in that feature, as such why change the game so that they can not use that in game avoidance method and forcing most players to interact with a feature of the game they clearly have demonstrated they want to avoid? its not logical Also, I think if most players are trying to avoid a specific game feature/experience the people who need to step back and reflect are the minority of people who want it and ask themselves 'why not just engage in said feature rather than trying to find ways to force everyone else to engage in it as well'. aka, if you do not like a hack, do not use a hack and let others alone.

I am a huge fan of making more advanaced cooking part of the core game. There is Expanded Foods mod which is very good but I do not think they have it working yet after 1.20 update many many months ago but they are working on it.
-
Maybe I misunderstand here but what is the point in creating game mechanics that intentionally force players into a situation they clearly do not want to be involved in? Again, maybe I misunderstand but this seems very...well..wrong really. To clarify: If a developer creates a challenge and the community finds away around it and most people use that method then that is a really good signal that people are not interested in the core game challenge in the first place. If people WANT to engage in that challenge they will not use said hack on a large community scale. make sense?

you have to admit, coming to Vintage Story because drifters spawn in your base is pretty friggin hysterical. I mean in a worst case situation it means you have to sit in your room and stair at a wall, not exactly compelling game play now is it? Best case they are just ants you have to smash around a bit because they distracted your line of thinking, that is it.that is 100% all of it. Come to Vintage story because of that? I do not believe it.

I think given I have now figured it out and I NEVER use tongs to deal with meals, I am not going to invest to much time talking about it further. I know that is my go to statement but I really do try. -

I make hot coffee every day, I poor that coffee straight from my French press into a cermaic coffee cup. I can hold it for about 10 seconds that point before I have to put it down. (to be fair without the handle because my handle is broken) Most people use coffee machines so they are unaware of this, I assume. -

do you think that perhaps...(not just bear with me a second) that perhaps the reason you can pick up the food once its in a crockpot is because a bowl is not as thick as a crockpot? and yes, I absolutely have had ceramic bowls be too hot in real life, zero question. including hot coffee. -

1. I would be fine with a change to show how long before you can pick it up. They do not do that one forging but I do not see any reason why not. 2. My hunch is that the future updates will be more feature rich and less story rich. I get a feeling there is going to be a lot and I mean a LOT of upgrades in that department coming. 3. regarding fat specifically, I think they are building a foundation for more cooking possiblities. what exactly? I do not know -
1.22.0-pre.1 - Fishing, Mechanisms, Metalworking and More!
CastIronFabric replied to Tyron's topic in News
yes. I think the chances of one having a cooking pot but not a crockpot is extreemly low (although not zero). So, take the crockpot in any slot and have it highlighted, click on the cooking pot that is completed without taking it out of the fire. done. food is now in the crockpot and the crock is not hot. I do not recall if the food inside still is or not, but regardless, it really does not take that long to cool down. In fact, in early game I cook, then go off and do other things, come back and do the same thing but with my bowl and its cooled down by the time I get back. Regardless of how much people like to disagree, the reality is, there is more steps and impedance to making fat than there is to hot food. (this assertion is a comparative assertion) On fat you need two cooking pots in early game (one for cooking and one for fat production). When you get fat you have to cook it (so more firewood), then you have to let it sit in the cooking pot for 5-6 in game hours, then you need to make a bucket (which means you need well..a saw) then you get the fat using a bucket and dump it on the ground. I personally enjoy game features that require a lot of steps to get something done so I am ok with this. If I wanted super simple crafting I would just play minecraft -
It should be a place you go to instead of come to you and there should be a reward for doing it but done in a way that its not a requirement. For example: you have a deed area, just as an example lets say 15x15 blocks but it can be extended by purchasing deed extensions from any trader, portals and monsters will not spawn in that are. When you get a notification of a TP storm you go to a portal (which plenty will spawn when a storm is coming) and then you jump into that portal and there you are. Whatever special items you can loot there via combat can also be gone in game play without doing that but it will take considerably more time and be more grindy, lets say a LOT of panning for example. There is nothing in the lore that suggests storms must be global and not a place you go to. done.

1.22.0-pre.1 - Fishing, Mechanisms, Metalworking and More!
CastIronFabric replied to Tyron's topic in News
that is an incorrect assessment. It is actually fairly easy to cook in the update and never use thongs and yes I mean in a cooking pot and its not a 'work around' its literally the best way to do it in every respect even in the old updates by a fairly wide margin in fact. -
I am not sure how many people have read my comment regarding my game play so forgive me if you have. With my settings in previous versions I kill a pig in 3 hits with a copper spear. In the release candidate (with the exact same world settings) I killed a pig with 2 hits with a copper spear the first time and 3 hits with a copper spear the second time. The first time both hits where while crouched which is why I think it was different.

I have no idea, I am not trying to engage in the larger point. I am just giving a history lesson. It actually one of the only things I distinctly recall from my 6th grade. It was one of those Disney educational movies they used to do back then. The basic idea is that that is a balance between reality and fiction and fun. Its not a science, its an art. -

actually that is completely normal. In fact Disney even had a word for it (keep in mind this was easily over 40 years ago but I recall it specifically. The word was 'Fictional realism'. It was described as having roots in something familiar and 'real' based while at the same time being fictional and fanciful.
