So tule gives you thatch directly, and it takes 4 thatch to make a slanted roof.  But if you do the math it is the same as grass.  4 roofs = 2 haybales = 16 grass = 4 grass per roof.  Am i missing something?

Yes... the patch notes :)

From 1.19.0:

Quote
  • Feature: Added new Tule plant beside lakes (usually spawning in different places from Cattails, more common around high altitude lakes). These drop thatch. Thatch roofing can be made from thatch or dry grass in this version; in the future thatch roofing may be craftable from thatch only.

Note that this may not necessarily happen; the dev team can change their minds. But it's the current plan.

You need the same amount of grass and thatch for a given roofing block, and they both take the same amount of time and tool durability to harvest, so they are pretty much equal as building materials (at least for roofing).

Also incidentally it serves as a conversion method of grass to thatch. Not sure why that'd be useful but disassembling thatch roof tiles made from grass gives thatch.

I was really hoping 1.20 would adjust this, because this statement is not true. Tule is much rarer to find, appears in lower quantities and takes much longer to regrow. You can also cut grass much faster in comparison. I know because I seriously tried to use it in 1.19. By the time it had regrown I had long finished my roof on my starter house already, which still took a lot of grass cutting since you need hundreds of it. Thatch roofing is simply one of the hardest roofing types to acquire at the moment.

If they want to make tule an actual alternative they need to increase the yield of tule by quite a lot, especially if they want to remove the grass recipe. Otherwise they're effectively going to kill the use of thatch roofing, which is already comparatively low because of the high effort involved to make them.

I have found that tule is rare enough that it doesn't even really make sense to every try to use it for roofing. Grass is literally everywhere. Also it kind of sucks that thatch roofing takes as much effort as it does. It is certainly more accessible than other roofing types but it takes a lot of grass or tule to make. At the end of the day it's cosmetic so I guess it doesn't really matter.

Tule is somewhat common near small lakes, but because it's not compatible with grass in the recipes and cannot be harvested with a scythe, it is currently inferior to grass for thatching, however, if you have a big enough supply of it, you can gather it with a knife and maybe save those resources you would have spend on a scythe on other things.

Rye and spelt should drop straw, rye straw roof were common thing. Hay should be used for feeding animals. It is strange how it works now.

Agreed!

I agree that tule is both too rare, and too inefficient to ever intentionally use. I was excited to use it early on, since I had some thatch based building ideas. But as soon as I started trying to actually use it I quickly abandoned it, and now am slightly resentful when I see that tule has spawned near a water source instead of something useful.
