New mob is pretty cool

Now I feel cheated. I'm into August, and I still have yet to meet one. Though possibly I've heard one. There are several new sounds out there...

I've only experienced them as a viewer on streams, but they seem to be obnoxiously common. If you heard a sound like someone is trying to suck the last remaining drops of liquid out of an empty glass, you encountered them already.

I'm guessing it's probably going to be more finely-tuned by the time the update is released. I also wonder if the spawn rate is cranked up deliberately at the moment in order to better check the mob for bugs or unintended behavior. After all, it's a bit harder to test it if it's a super rare occurrence.

Then I guess I have. The other new noise I haven't been able to put a face to yet is some kind of clicking, kind of like tapping two sticks together. But me being me, on permadeath, if I see or hear something I can't identify, I'm leaving Usain Bolt in the dust.

Not that I've played the pre-release, mind you...I'm waiting for things to be a bit more polished first. But judging by the video I saw yesterday, yeah, that's the noise those things make while idling around...assuming they aren't having a fit, anyway.

Good luck! 🤣 I'm not sure that you can outrun these things, though I would happily be mistaken.

Yeah I had one chasing me yesterday and it was very hard to ditch. I like the mob but hopefully it's tuned down in speed or waits awhile before it starts spawning in the full release. Otherwise it's just another frustrating mob to kill you early on without any way to kill or get away from once you aggro it.

pre5 tweaked the Shiver. "spawn reduction to the other secret mob." I am not playtesting 1.20 so I can't tell how much better it is now, though.

pre5 also added a new mob, whose behaviour I find interesting. I don't want to spoil anything, but it almost feels bugged. Haha

Meh. I've not yet died in 1.20, though I got close in a landslide. I've heard what I've been told are the new monster's sounds, though I've never bothered to turn around to make sure. Mostly because its always been dark, so would be pointless. Thing is, though, it\s not death incarnate.

I'm thinking more for new players. The bears and wolves are enough to deal with for someone brand new. The drifters are annoying but once you figure out you can just run away from them they are easy to avoid. Something that runs fast and comes out at night and even crawls out of every cave entrance you get near during the day is off putting.

True. It's only nighttime, right? Heard it in caves from time to time, but not knowing how tough they are, I just left and came back after they de-spawned. I don't know that new players should be expected to fear some "clickin' noise" but I'm not sure that's not where the game is headed, either.

The one that almost got me crawled out of a cave I was nearby. I don't want to give away spoilers but I think it can climb walls so it will come out pretty easy. You know the way sometimes drifters will come out of caves near you in the middle of the day except if they can climb walls it will happen more frequently. The nighttime is a pretty easy thing to avoid just stay indoors.

I keep seeing them spawn in caves and then pathfind to the surface. I've been jumpscared by one in broad daylight before. 😅
I'm assuming this behaviour is unintended though.

Agreed. Drifters are scary the first few times you encounter them, but they're never truly terrifying...at least the low-level ones. They're enough of a threat to help teach new players about the world and what to expect from it, and how to think better on their feet, without being overwhelming(exception: apocalyptic rift activity). They're also decent at punishing complacency in experienced players. Same goes for wolves and bears.

The skitter(I just feel that's more fitting than "shiver", really)...I expected that to be a rare encounter similar to sawblade locusts. A dangerous monster that is good at hunting you down. A fast mob that hits hard isn't a bad thing, but it shouldn't be a common encounter if it's going to be tanky on top of all of that. Lack of durability is generally what balances fast-moving, hard-hitting mobs. That being said...I'd rather see more "boring" designs like the low-tier drifters and mechanicals for the common enemies, and leave the really twisted stuff for rare encounters. That way it's a lot harder for the player to become completely desensitized to them.

I also keep hearing them on the surface. Their sound radius is really large, so I will hear *click click click* on the surface from an enemy who is 20 blocks below ground.
