i don't think there's any malicious plan to change Java into BE, and that 'removing modding by august' thing .. cannot find a lick of it online? They actually made modding a bit nicer last year by removing obfuscated code.

this was kind of my conclusions as well. Couldn't find ANYTHING about it online. No outraged Reddit posts, nothing on the MC Forums. It was as if the only mention of it was here. Too coincidental for me to accept as fact.

Not sure on the modding debate since I haven't heard much on this and Minecraft did get some pretty big improvements to data-packs within the past year or so (and continues to get more options there). Monetization wise, I doubt Minecraft Java would include that anytime soon unless major parity changes to BE/Java are made, which seeing as they are two completely different backends (C and Java) I am a little doubtful on.

Now as for development, I think the issue I've had with Minecraft is largely that its development cycle now doesn't substantially implement game-changing features, the content-drop system incentivizes Mojang to release smaller updates with minor content which, while it keeps some engaged, does not really work as well in my mind as Vintage Story's major update cycles. Put another way, what I like most about Vintage Story's development is that each update changes core gameplay aspects and refines existing mechanics, new mechanics/biomes/etc... aren't added at random or are totally disjointed from other game systems/mechanics

Supposedly for performance enhancement

oh that's a neat change, good to see that they've got a plan for macOS users

it's not going to break every single mod on Minecraft, it's not nearly as big of a change as 1.13 was, and by the sounds of other forum chatter, noone seems to be planning to stay on the old version in protest, even with the snapshots available to peek at.

at worst it looks like it's gonna break some old shaders that haven't had consistent updates. at best, more freedom for modders when it comes to complex rendery things. I genuinely see more positive than negative responses to this kind of update, people have been waiting for vulkan for a while.

yeah because Vulkan gives DirectX-level features without the performance hit. This is actually GREAT news for Minecraft Java! They explicitly say they want mod makers to reach out if they run into issues porting their mods from OpenGL to Vulkan.

Sorry, but I really don't see anything here that kills Java modding.

Possibly causing the game, or newer versions of the game at least, to not run properly on older hardware either. However, there's nothing unusual about that at all; many games that are long-lived go through the process at least once in their lives.

Pretty much. Minecraft's performance has been suffering for a while now, and with the introduction of Caves & Cliffs it got especially bad. If I recall correctly, Mojang has been trying to improve the performance in recent updates, so while mods like Sodium and Optifine are still useful they perhaps aren't as critical to play as they used to be.

Minecraft is like a malleable ball of clay while Vintage Story is a wood carving. Both are great in their own respective areas, and are enjoyed in completely different ways. I can understand Microsoft hate and not liking new updates, but version control is one of the biggest strengths Minecraft has.
