not without mods at least and id rather stay away from mods as they become outdated so fast and can break the already fragile performance that this game has on my system.

The game is three mods in a trenchcoat and the key with mods is to only update as you see fit, unless what the game update has in it fixes or adds something you really need now.

You'd think that a mod adding achievements to the game would be so popular there'd be tons of copies and people updating it as a open source thing, but nah

Which is a shame because i feel like what im lacking as a new player is achievements, everything is done through a guide... I'd like sounds and "rewards" besides just progression lmao

You might try out this mod: https://mods.vintagestory.at/show/mod/247

It doesn't add achievements, exactly, but you can level up your character by doing various things in the game and pick rewards as a result.

There's also this mod too: https://mods.vintagestory.at/show/mod/14390

You get a health boost for sampling different foods.

Otherwise, I don't think most VS players are really interested in an achievement system. The mod I found that adds such a system does have a few thousand downloads, which is nothing to sneeze at, but it's not so many that I would call it a popular mod either. Achievement in VS isn't so much flashy sounds and shallow pop-ups, as much as it is figuring out better ways to do things, completing parts of the story and uncovering new lore, or enjoying how effective new equipment is compared to the old.

I like the cheeky humor Tyron and Co. put into the game, namely the death screen "Congratulations!  You died." followed by "Rage Quit?" and that one sign causing someone to rage quit indefinitely.

In that vein any achievements I'd like to see are things like "Sky High" for stacking peat or fireword to world height.  Or "Bellyflop Challenge" for falling more than 50 blocks and catching yourself on a ladder less than 5 blocks above the ground thereby avoiding fall damage.   Maybe "Pin Cushion" for being killed by multiple bowtorn attacks [edit] or being killed by bowtorns multiple times.

Probably.

now I have a bunch of Subaru jokes stuck in my head...

What do you call a Subaru that's under water? Scubaru
What do you call a Subaru that comes with a vacuum? Subaroomba

I got the game yesterday, played it over the night and now a little in the morning.

I already watched a lore video that explains the game up to the point where the player gets in the game, and that's i guess what got me interested enough to get the game.

However, the fact that there is a hard limit to progression, that your tech progression just ends at steel is... just not enough for me. I love the idea of coming from the stone age to finally make it to the modern age, but obviously that's not the goal for the game as its bound by the lore.

Just, i looked at the progression in the book, and i feel like you could breeze through the game and the only thing at the end of the game is whatever lore might come from you progressing through the game. That's... not a good payoff to me personally. I am thinking about refunding, though it is only 20 bucks.

I'm not hating on the game, i see why people like it, but i'm just saying how it feels like there isn't enough progression to satisfy people like me, not without mods at least and id rather stay away from mods as they become outdated so fast and can break the already fragile performance that this game has on my system.

well I do not know what the progression limit on the most popular block game of all time is (you know that other game) but at least for me it takes about 200 hours for me to get to steel. To be fair I do focus on multiple things at once and I have some mods

Now I predict there will be replies to my observation claiming that they can get to steel in 20 hours but that is to be expected :)

I think it's probably possible, but it going to rely heavily on map RNG. Given everything that steel takes, the player won't be able to waste much time actually searching for resources. Assuming that all critical minerals are near spawn, I think the bottleneck would probably be flax.

Netherite is the limit, at least of the time of this writing. There were some changes to make it a bit harder to obtain(which were much needed), but it's still something easily achievable within a few hours of starting a brand new world, if one knows what to do.

I set up a new world (1.21.5) for a bit of fun, and with a pretty "normal" play through for me (setting up farms, infrastructure) I'm at 30 hours and have iron.
This was avoiding caves, but using all the knowledge that I have such as using Traders for my first pick to get iron ore.
I actually lost time because I had the iron ore, but forget I needed enough bronze for an anvil, so then had to go back and prospect for tin, which with hindsight I could have done before. Ironically on this world it is all around my spawn in quantity, while on my last world there was a dearth of it.

Steel requires a game week of processing, which requires the player to be logged in. So I suspect that 20 hours would be "hella optimistic" for everyone but potentially the speedrunners - of which I don't think we have many, because as pointed out, this is a slower game with longer bottlenecks than Minecraft.

You might be able to shave off some time with beds?

understand you have to make your own cementation furnace and likely your own windmill gathering the materials yourself.
