Slam Posted Monday at 01:19 PM Report Posted Monday at 01:19 PM I’ve seen a lot of debate about berry bushes so far, but not much on the new source of food, fishing! fishing in my opinion is a little bit too power, creating bait isn’t too difficult, and with few nearby lakes to travel to, it isn’t too difficult to turn 3 red meat into 40ish fish meat. Sure, fish don’t give fat or hides, but the constant threat of hunger during the mad rush of early copper was basically gone, with a bonus of a bunch of bone mill once your fruit bushing mature, and if you need more food, you can turn fish meat into more bait, as long as you have one of the two “fish crops” (I can’t spell their names, so fish crops it is) on hand. Now I haven’t played enough to see depleting an area as an issue, to my knowledge, fish in an area until it takes a while for the fish to bite, and then come back in a month or two. Could be a problem if there isn’t a lot of nearby lakes, or a mild inconvenience. Now is it worth it? Yes, but actually no, sure, a lot of food without getting your neck snapped by a deer, but you know how no one likes panning, The only reason it’s bearable is because it kind of mindless. Fishing is not mindless, you need to bait the rod, cast the rod, and listen for the splash, and you repeat that serval times, and then you got to go to a new lake after while, a lot more cumbersome mouse movement compared to panning. On top of that fish, are not pelts, and when you have 40 pieces of fish, your probably not going to go hunting, and focus on other things. overall, fishing feels a little powerful, if mundane, but I enjoy it, and I don’t hate the short burst of food it can provide without accidentally falling on bear, or being ran over by an angry elk, but I would like to hear what other people think.

Zane Mordien Posted Monday at 01:46 PM Report Posted Monday at 01:46 PM The fishing crops are sort of poinless since it takes an entire growing season to grow them. At least the Fennel. Other than that, Fishing always bores me to death in every game I've ever played. I guess if I need food that bad I'll do it. The next time I do a snowball earth playthrough for example, I will use it since food is pretty hard at first in that scenario.
ItzWalterino Posted Monday at 02:49 PM Report Posted Monday at 02:49 PM I kinda like the idea of fishing, though i would love to see more 'fishing industrialization' in the future, similar to how you farm animals you could make ponds in which you raise fish and have a stable food source that can be great in some places where animals are hard to come by! 2
PoisonedPawn777 Posted Monday at 03:22 PM Report Posted Monday at 03:22 PM Bit easy, takes 5 seconds to get half a dozen worms and another minute to have 12-18 fish filets. I'd like to see the catch rate scaled back a little. Without gating fishing entirely behind metal, it would have been nice to have fish traps or a form of crude nets with stone weights rather than a rod with no hook that magically pulls up fish. Early game food is fairly abundant already; it's been made easier now.
LadyWYT Posted Monday at 03:30 PM Report Posted Monday at 03:30 PM I like the fishing, though I will note that fish is a good food source when cooked into meals and more of a survival food otherwise since the satiety value is pretty low. It shouldn't be the sole source of protein though, since areas can be overfished rather easily if one isn't careful. To my knowledge fish can still be caught in overfished areas, it will just take much longer. Otherwise, it's a nice, relaxing little activity to do every once in a while, and fun to collect trophy fish for decoration. 2 2

More like Tyron and Saraty were sitting around thinking of new ways to make the player stand still longer so a ninja bear could sneak up behind and eat them! The whole eldrich horror thing is just a cover for Saraty's secret desire to make a bear mauling simulation. 1 6

coolAlias Posted Monday at 09:25 PM Report Posted Monday at 09:25 PM I enjoy grunting for worms. I wish we could also use the small fry we catch directly as bait for larger fish. I do kind of wish that fishing itself required a little more effort to reel the fish in, rather than a single click and you're done, but I'm also okay with where it's at. It'd be nice to see more actual fish populating the waters, too - I've only ever seen 2 at once even in a fairly large pond / small lake (maybe around 50-60 blocks across). 1
HalfAxd Posted Tuesday at 04:38 PM Report Posted Tuesday at 04:38 PM It feels too much like a fish generator to me... throw something in the water and we'll spawn a fish for you. I'm planning to only spear fish in my game until I want to collect fish trophies, then I'll use the fishing pole.
CastIronFabric Posted Wednesday at 01:35 PM Report Posted Wednesday at 01:35 PM (edited) 1. I have read that some people really enjoy panning. In fact I also was told that it is reasonable to get about 64 pieces of clay by panning instead of spending that time looking for a clay deposit. Take that claim as you will. 2. I really am not a fan of fishing in any game really or in real life, I do not get it. 3. To be its fairly self evident that the purpose of fishing is for very early game (pre copper) and I have found that it does seem to balance fairly well the food needs in early game given the berry changes but I usually bias toward 'it works!' so there is that. Blaiyze Posted Wednesday at 03:01 PM Report Posted Wednesday at 03:01 PM Truthfully, the main reason for my using the Primitive Survival mod, was for fishing. Especially with adjustments to the berry bushes - which I like on the surface (still haven't played 1.22 as I prefer to wait for stable versions before jumping in), given berries were the cheesiest part of the game and weren't as intricate as other things. Honestly, I prefer simplistic fishing mechanics - too many games jump too hard into mini-game mode and it becomes cumbersome after a while. I don't know how many VS players play solo, my assumption would be a fair amount of us, and if that's the case, I definitely don't see the point in over complicating fishing - all the systems are already intricate and relatively time consuming to some degree to the point that you have to focus on organizing your days potentially around doing one or two things. In short, I'm looking forward to checking out fishing in 1.22 and potentially removing a mod from my already extensive mod list.
