I've hit this point in my current survival world where I've... hit a wall. AKA winter. Normally I use winter as the time to work on pottery, small tasks, etc. but I've finished most of it already or before winter came. Now I'm incredibly bored just waiting for leather and building armor, but it's very repetitive and turning monotonous. Everything I want to do I have to wait till spring, and I also realized I don't have proper winter clothes so I'm also waiting to do that too.

What do you all do to spice up gameplay during the winter months, or when you get bored and don't know what to do? I feel like I overtuned my first year in this new world to the point I have nothing left to do. Any advice for getting through the boring chores?

Winter months are ideal for refining iron and steel, since you're not really going to be traveling much of anywhere and winter often brings stronger, more frequent winds. The forge and refractory fires are also very good at keeping you warm. Otherwise, winter is a prime time for decorating and organizing your base, as well as making plans for the big projects you'd like to accomplish when warmer weather arrives. If you don't mind a challenge though, winter can also be an interesting time to travel, since stopping to camp from time to time will be a lot more important, and you'll be able to cross water on ice in certain instances, if the ice has had time to form.

In these cases, that's when I log out of the world and go find something else to do for a while. Moments like these act as natural break points, so I walk away feeling satisfied with what I accomplished rather than feeling like I had to force myself to stop.

Depends what my goals are in world and what my food supplies are like.

If I had enough food to deal with the hunger penalty, and I needed warm clothes, I'd be out there hunting for pelts. Short trips where I can come back to base and warm up easy. After I have some warmer clothes, I'd be prospecting for the next major minerals I need.

In my game, I've got steel, but I am looking for pentlandite (so I can make cupronickel) and cinnabar (so I can make even better warm clothes). If the prospecting by my base isn't great, I check what kind of rocks the minerals I'm looking for are likely to be found in, look for an area with lots of those rocks, and set up an outpost I can fill with necessities (shelter, bed, firewood, cooking pot, bowl, storage vessel full of food) out that way, and use it as a base of operations for prospecting.

If I don't have a few temporal gears, I'm going to prioritise getting some before I prioritise setting up outposts that are a long way from world spawn. I like to do this by trading with Treasure Hunters. Some people like to do this by hunting drifters. If you've got lots of gravel near you, it's also easy to go out, grab a pile of gravel, then sit comfortably indoors panning it, if you have a bucket and can make yourself a little indoor water source to stand in.

I'll chisel something nice to hold the water too.

spring, summer especially and early autumn is usually spent on gathering food, and supplies. winter months when its cold i'm usually home. smithing, cooking, doing leather. any jobs that got pushed back till winter hits. That and expanding my base downwards. I basically dig tunnels, building an underground base.

I find winter is also a good time to explore caves and dig deep exploratory shafts in decent+ areas I've already prospected.

Of course, it works best if you've got some warm clothes to wear, or just make sure you travel during the day when it's warmer (and bring a lit torch / campfire supplies).

Winter is a great time to go on long-distance adventures to warmer climates. You can travel south for several thousands of blocks, collect tree saplings, fruit tree cuttings, crops, flowers, and other materials that you can only find in the south. Then by the time you return home, you can start planting them in your greenhouse (or fields if its hot enough).

move 20,000 blocks south (its worth it) and find a translocator and use the translocator relocator.

In my 'opinion' (but not really) the way to play this game properly is with mods.

This!  I learned early to ensure I have clothes for winter stowed away so I could do this.

I suppose you could have the game run and go do other things (checking in occasionally) just to keep winter rolling...

Enjoy

I can sum it up into one word: decorating. More specifically with my food-sources secured in winter and not much to do, I spend the time adding some finer detailing to my base using a chisel, perhaps working on a few flourishes to infrastructure too if it's not too long of a trip. While migrating south is an option and some would argue the better use of time, late-game once you've gotten food supplies stable, have winter clothes, and made armor/tools, decorating isn't a bad use of time either
