I'm somewhat confused when it comes to smithing, namely when it comes to the forge temperature and bellows. The announcement for 1.22 said very explicitly that bellows would be optional, and only necessary for iron or stronger tools. Yet that doesn't seem to be the case. My forge maxes out at 750 degrees, which is below the smithing temperature for everything except lead and lead solder. I'm not able to smith even copper or bronze tools. Using a bellows increases that temperature, making it possible, even the crude bellows, but I have to ask. Why are bellows required when the update announcement says that they wouldn't be? Is it a bug? Is it intentional? All my mods are disabled, but maybe it's a bug localized to Linux?

According to the wiki (which is, however, not updated since 1.20) Lead can be smithed at any temperature, everything else needs about 50% of their melting point minimum. I also do very much feel like I was able to smith copper at 700° flat, you just need to basically re-heat the moment it starts cooling. So I don't know what's going on with your game but it seems to not be going correctly.

I'm able to smith copper and bronze completely fine. It seems to be around 550-600 degrees that you have to reheat it. I also run linux and so far I see no difference as to when I used windows.

Possibly? I play on Windows and haven't needed a bellows for working materials below iron tier.

This sounds like you're talking about smelting copper and bronze which typically requires temps off 1,100 C to melt the nuggets.  Smelting should be done in a firepit, not a forge.

No I'm talking about smithing. I smelted Tin Bronze into ingots and placed those ingots into a forge. You are, however, correct that the temperature listed in the UI is for smelting. For some reason, smithing temperature doesn't seem to be listed and I thought it would be. After further research it seems that smithing temp is roughly half of smelting temp.

Turns out, materials are smithable at 750 degrees, it just looks like they aren't. The purple outline on the voxels is what made me think they weren't usable. Bellows aren't needed, it's not a bug, just bad interpretation on my part.
