I went on an adventure to try and find clay and it took me a good hour or so and it was semi far from my house. But you know what the crazy thing was? I found some a lot closer to my house in the same meadow.... I hope you find some clay that you missed earlier on!! I'd recommend not bunny hopping around and take a nice slow hike :)

Also if you don't view it as "too cheaty", checking the Color-Accurate World Map for new games can do wonders.

Or for existing games taken from the Wiki's List of Server Commands:

World map

All of the following work[1] in a singleplayer world to restore the parchment-style map to the classic colorful map:

  • /worldconfig colorAccurateWorldmap true
  • /worldconfigcreate bool colorAccurateWorldmap true
  • /player [playername] privilege grant colorAccurateWorldmap

In a multiplayer world, the following restores the classic map for an individual:

  • /player [playername] privilege grant colorAccurateWorldmap

while the following restores the classic map for all players:

  • /worldconfig colorAccurateWorldmap true
  • /worldconfigcreate bool colorAccurateWorldmap true

(needs confirmation)

Spent 2 hours pure searching with my friend trying to find any clay (in different directions). That's a total of 4 hours of gameplay just searching very narrowly for clay, ignoring the first few test worlds and first day exploration for a base. I want to love this game, but the initial progression gating is so huge, we felt put off of the whole thing and wondered if we got a bugged world or if it's worth even continuing with the game at all. At the end we found some, but felt more exhausted then accomplished...

Welcome to the forums! Clay is one of those resources that's hard to spot at first, but once you figure out what to look for it's much easier to find. What I tend to do is focus on other tasks while I'm out and about, and just mark down the deposits as I find them. That way I'm getting multiple things done, and know where the clay is so I can return to the deposits as needed.

A couple of important things to keep in mind as well; clays have specific spawn requirements in addition to the general spawn requirements that all share. Clay deposits only spawn in climates where it's warm enough(not the arctic) and has enough rainfall(they won't spawn in deserts). Red clay spawns at higher altitudes, while blue clay spawns around sea level. Fire clay only generates naturally under black coal and anthracite deposits, and can also generate in small deposits in bauxite biomes(I'm not sure if rainfall is a factor in this case).

I also had a LOT of trouble finding clay. I was only able to find it on the side of small hills - never on the ground so far, although I search thousands of blocks in each direction. I found so much peat and other types of soil, but alas, no clay.

I recommend looking at the sides of hills, but it's quite time consuming and once my current deposit runs out, I'll be right back to looking for another one!

Good luck!!

Clay is everywhere on every map if you are playing the default settings. Don't give up, it is there.

Even if doesn't spawn in the artic it still spawns at a pretty cold temperature. When I do snow ball earth I can still find red clay at the "hot" start which is still very cold.

I was just about to post the same thing. But just as I opened this thread I found a massive deposit 150 blocks outside my first base. My recommendation: Don't look at night, you will miss it if you're not a pro (which I am not)
