Playing with kids

Does anyone have experience with playing with young kids. My daughter (8) likes minecraft. She likes to watch me play and I let her play my character sometimes. But with the mobs and rifts, she dies alot. I know i can make the game easier. but i was curious if i could make her character much much easier while not making mine as easy. I don't play on public servers, so it is just private games. But I really want to find a way to play together.

TIA

Hello,

Here is a list of server commands that you can use to help with this problem. There may be something in here that could make a player more resilient.

https://wiki.vintagestory.at/List_of_server_commands

A simple way could be to switch yourself to creative and spawn in some steel armor of your choice. This way she will be much more resilient to any enemy that can spawn and practically invincible to lower level enemies.

The commands are entered into the text chat box.

/gamemode

  • /gamemode [0..4|guest|survival|creative|spectator]
Mode names can be shortened to any length. Sets your game mode:
    • 0|guest Guest mode - Cannot place/remove any blocks but can interact with them
    • 1|survival Survival mode - Can slowly break/place blocks. Can die. Cannot fly. Survival inventory.
    • 2|creative Creative mode - Access to all blocks through the creative inventory. Instant block breaking. Cannot die. Can fly.
    • 3|spectator Spectator mode - Cannot place/remove blocks and cannot interact with anything, but can fly.
  • /gamemode [playername] [0..4]
Sets the gamemode for given player.

My experience is from being an admin on a personal server with some friends. I haven't tried using the commands in single player, so if you run into a problem you may have to do some research or get someone else to help you out the rest of the way.

You can make mobs passive, i.e. they will only attack if you attack first. Unfortunately this is a world setting so it will affect your character as well, but not to an extreme degree. I'm not aware of any mods that implements what you want, although in theory one could be made that would add an OP character class that has much higher HP and other stats without any downsides.

This is probably the best answer right here: making your own class via mod, that greatly increases her character's attributes without changing your own in kind.

Also a good idea, for a non-modded solution. Steel armor isn't foolproof though, and it will still slow a character down when worn, so it may not be the best option necessarily. However, if one were going this route, I'd also recommend potentially spawning in the admin blade with the armor. It's an overpowered weapon with high durability, that should one-shot most anything in the game, but it should also take care of the monster problem.

I would also like to see an option for this. either via mod or via play permissions. all we really need is a permissions tag for invulnerability instead fo just tying that to creative mode. younger players or those with anxiety still want to play the game and progress on my server, but dont want to engage in any combat and will just log out if it happens. the rest of the server is perfectly happy to let them be invincible since they will just avoid combat regardless. but no one wants to be in creative mode since that takes away to much of the playing the game for themselves and others.

There are a few things I might try to help make the game easier and possibly more enjoyable for a young player in vanilla. Use commands to "keep inventory on death" and turn off temporal storms while they are playing. You could travel far south where there are no wolves and the bears don't attack on sight then use the command to teleport her character when she joins the world. Fence off an area and place lights through out, then set her spawn in that area with a gear so she has a safe space to venture from on lower rift nights if she wants. This way she can decide how much fighting she wants to do. If she likes it and gets better, then as suggested you could give her armor and head out together. If not, then this game has lots to offer. Many hours can be spent on activities such as decorating, cooking, and animal husbandry. They all can be done in that safe fenced off space. And there is nothing better than creating a base together. And this way she can always command you to go down into the scary mines to get such and such. ;)

I play with my son who is 9. He just loves playing with daddy in his words. He died constantly at first,  but he has slowly learned to not die all the time. He loves the better ruins mod since it gives you something to find and explore.  Just one word of advice, keep your money on you ... lol my kid will spend every gear I have on silly stuff from the trader. I let him keep his own gears and buy whatever he wants.

Thank you everyone for your answers, I used some of everyone's ideas and she is having a blast.

I made us our own world and some of the things i did:

HP higher

Keep items on death

passive mobs

admin sword

i gave her a set of good armor

It is fun, but a little too easy for me. She asked to join my world, which is default everything. I ended up just giving her an admin sword and she is doing great! she does die, but she is totally fine with it. I have to be careful, because she does accidentally kill me with her admin sword sometimes. But i enjoy playing with her.

Lol, turn off PVP. I should have mentioned that. My son killed me all the time as well until I disabled that setting. I'm glad she is having fun. It's a blast playing with them.

Sounds like a story for the Humorous Stories thread.  *shameless plug*
