1.20.8-rc.2 + stable + 1.20.9: Mob spawn balancing, Item disappearing fix

That I can live with. The fact that I am having problems harvesting the bowtorns when they are dead is still a problem. And yes I am aware of the instant mob drop mods. I had to rip them out of my mod folder when I picked up a problem 😞

I 100% liked it better with the more moody lighting. It was already hard to do moody lighting in VS because mobs spawn at light level 7 instead of 0, like in oldschool MC before they changed that. But now it became even less feasible because even low light sources emit a lot of visual light. Makes me wonder what's even the point of oil lamps or even candles if we can't use them for moody light conditions because they're either causing mobs to spawn or now because they're not even moody anymore.

i personally felt placed lights were way too dim prior to this change but now they might be too bright, maybe meeting somewhere in the middle would be a good alternative

@Tyron Previously I was running 1.20.4 and I decided to upgrade to pickup all the fixes being put in.  I went all the way up to 1.20.9 everything loads fine and the game works but when you run around the UI flickers in and out.  I'm running on MacOS 12.5.1.  So i decided to slowly walk backwards version by version and it seems it was introduced in 1.20.8 as it works perfectly fine in 1.20.7

It seems to be related to the mouse position somehow because if you hit E to open your inventory and then move the mouse around the UI flickers in and out.

@Rocktavious Welcome to the forums!

Your comment would have higher visibility to Tyron and devs if you posted it to the github.

yea that was also my idea, but for some reason github is blocking my country even vpn dosnt help

I am seeing constant complaints of broad daylight chock full of bowtorns. I am not seeing hordes, but I am seeing quite a few rusty mobs in the middle of day in the open plains of my Creative Mode world. I do not want to start a new survival mode game if this is the intended behavior.

Also, I got to say the updates recently seem rushed and lacking QA testing. Each hotfix brings in another critical issue or two it seems, and the game already had a lot of them to begin with - especially since the last major update or two.

I first got the game on 1.20.6 so I don't know how the quality of updates was before then, but I do agree with you. These issues seem prevalent enough that they would be caught before reaching stable.

My money is teething troubles.

I don't know, obviously, but this is pretty common when you expand your programmer base. It takes a while for the protocols to evolve to assure that changes in one object absolutely, positively can not affect any other object. Protocols that were not previously needed.

Earlier updates were very clean. So far as I know, this is the first time that something like helve hammer sounds could cause crashes in completely different code blocks.

I'll be honest and say I've avoided the unstable branch primarily to protect the mods I use.

I have no visibility to how many people are testing the unstable branch, but if it is too few then I'm willing to support the cause and focus more on helping VS get thru testing to improve quality.

They certainly are way too bright at the moment and I would prefer them to go back to pre-update levels, but I'm willing to accept some increase to how they were before.

On a wider note does anybody know if we're going to get another patch anytime soon, or have we now got to wait for 1.21?

I'd wager that probably hinges on what they're planning for 1.21 and how close they are to finishing it, compared to lingering issues from 1.20. If there's no terribly serious lingering issues(ie, issues that absolutely can't wait to be fixed) and 1.21 is decently close to a trial version, then I would say fixes will be implemented in 1.21. Otherwise, I'd expect another patch or two for 1.20 bugfixes while the devs are working on 1.21.

Tyron shoots for 2 updates a year.  Next one will probably be coming up around August since 1.20 started dropping back in Feb.

that change to lighting is huge. [...] i almost liked it better when it was still spooky out.

I too preferred the old lighting. It was much more subtle and atmospheric. Now everything is blown out and the only way to counter that is to use sources with lower levels, like candles, but that will invite mobs. Maybe someone can create a mod that gives us the old lighting back.
