I usually play with 10 day wait until monster spawn. Mainly because I love exploring far and wide for the best base location. and map reveal.

For people who have monsters on day one... do you explore? Like, with temp shelters.

or do you find a base location quickly and stay?

I start exploring from day one, with monsters turned on from the start, those early days are great for just wandering until you find somewhere nice to settle down. Since forage is so freely available.

The monsters don't really worry me that much, as if you're playing with lore content on you can always bunk down with a trader if you need to, or a little dirt shack and a hay bed only take a few minutes to put together. I honestly find being eaten by bears and wolves to be a far more common occurrence in those early days than monsters, haha

Same here...  I usually find a trader very close to start so I use that as a base to store things and wander around until I have what I want to venture out further...

I adventure and make a number of huts along the way (mark them on the map) until I see a place that "looks right" ;) for an initial base.

Enjoy!

Even on high activity, monsters only spawn in dark enough space, so our seraphs are pretty safe from bowtorn in daylight(surface drifters are not that deadly). So yes, I explore on day one, though I do change the setting when I want a peaceful time period with new world gen setting.

Base location though, I prefer a perma first base as a sort of industrial center, with all my forge and smith together. With that in mind, I would only settle in a location near clay, peat, surf copper, fresh water, stone for lime and bauxite, with at least three of these. It is easier to move my ass at first, than move my base later😆

Wait, so like, people actually don't place their base near spawn? I always build my packed dirt hut in a nice location almost immediately when I spawn in, then I expand on it as I progress.

Any problems with resources I deal with via exploitation of unconquered lands and wilderness, I never thought about exploring for resources first and settling later.

In my first world I settled down about 200 blocks from spawn in the first flat spot I found. Though after having to get though 5 and a half months of snowfall I like to explore a bit further south. I get to find different types of stone and wood to build my first house with and usually I'm close to 40 copper by the time I find a place I like.

@vinnland This all depends on how far you think you are going to move. Do you want to move 5-15K blocks away or just somewhere nearby that is perfect?

Either way for me the first base location is just a temporary place to get stuff done while you get an anvil.

Long Move:

Plant only turnips for a quick harvest.  You have to forget the clutter you accumlate and just take what you need when you decide to move. The only things that matter are the anvil, temporal gear if you have one, food, flax seeds, cooking pot & bowl, and then anything else you can fit in your inventory. You'll find more of everything else at the new location. I need to be moving by July 1st so there is still time to grow some flax at the new location. If you go far enough south there will be a longer growing season. If you move north you're crazy.

Local Move:

Plant everything as soon as you get the seeds, because you can always come back and harvest the crops. Scout the area to find the perfect base and when you have the anvil move to the new location. Make small trips to move stuff as you need it.

I usually spend the first day or two just scouting around the local area and marking different resources, so around a radius of maybe 500-1000 blocks. I don't like to settle right at spawn, but I don't like to settle too far from spawn either, since accidents happen and long death runs aren't really ideal. If it gets dark I'll just dig out a little hole to sleep in, but more often than not I'm just sleeping out in the open or borrowing a trader bed for the night, when possible.

Last update they added a rift activity grace period, so exploring or even having an open campsite for the first day or two is pretty safe.

This is also true. The rift activity for the first couple of days will typically be calm or low, so the worst the player will have to deal with is maybe a handful of monsters if a rift pops up nearby.

Surface monsters are not a threat, as they’re only teir 0, spawn only on rifts, which depending on the current activity might not be many, and can be out ran unless it’s a shiver, which will likely convulse on the ground if you hit it with a club or a spear. Wolves and bears on the other hand could be anyway, and are just as fast as the player, making them near impossible to run away from, and the making teir 2 makes them too risky to fight.

regardless of when monster spawn, one shouldn’t travel unless you’ve already traveled there and know there are not any wolves or bears.

surface monsters are just a little sad after you progress a little bit with some armor, just being really really annoying, perhaps rifts at higher rift activity spawn don’t last as long, and spawn stronger monsters and kill monsters from a rift significantly speeds up when the rift closes so you are not bombarded all night long when you not exploring and just doing work at night.

I always dig pits in areas I'm searching thru if its forest or I hear wolves... you can usually get to them and trap bears & wolves...

If I'm on a long range adventure, I stay away from forests (or burn them down)  :)

Enjoy!
