I almost always accidentally stumble over at least 1-3 deposits on my first day while gathering supplies. I can't remember the last normal seed I started that I didn't have clay firing during the first night.
Vexxvididu Posted April 2 Report Posted April 2 2 hours ago, Donny Mescha said: Im on my 20th seed still cant find clay It's a near certainty that you've passed by it several times and are not spotting it. From the top, it looks grassy.
LadyWYT Posted April 2 Report Posted April 2 2 hours ago, Donny Mescha said: Im on my 20th seed still cant find clay You'll also want to search grassy lowland areas that have decent rainfall, and not forests or thick shrubland. Forests, with the exception of pine forest in deserts, will be covered in forest floor, making it nigh impossible to spot clay if it spawned there. Likewise, shrublands may contain clay deposits, but those deposits will be very hard to spot due to the thick foliage covering the ground(which also makes threats like holes and bears harder to spot as well). Blue clay tends to always generate by water, while red clay can generate at some higher elevations but not mountaintops. As @Vexxvididu and @PoisonedPawn777 already said, you've likely run by a few deposits without realizing. From the top, clay can be hard to spot, since patchy grass will cover most of the clay's surface and the subtle texture difference can be difficult to notice while sprinting around. Clay is more easily noticed when viewed from the side, since it will have a mottled texture that stands out from nearby dirt. If you're playing with true map colors enabled, you can sometimes use the minimap to locate clay and peat deposits, as they will typically stand out as circular discolorations in the surrounding grass. 1
Teh Pizza Lady Posted April 3 Report Posted April 3 I keep stumbling across Copper deposits in areas we've already looked. Our house is probably in the ONE stable chunk in the middle of a forest of unstable chunks. There are resources everywhere. probably a coincidence, but I wonder if the chunk stability has anything to do with resource distribution or vice versa. If you're only looking in stable areas, then perhaps that might be why you're not finding much. Also clay can have grass, ferns even flowers growing on top of it. It can be really tricky to find sometimes, especially if you're looking for it. I find most of my stuff when I'm not looking for it. Try looking for borax or copper. You'll find tons of clay that way, I bet!

Limiting the search to only stable chunks still isn't a very good idea though, since searching a wider area will give more chances to find stuff than searching a smaller area.

I suspect you just need some practice in spotting clay. Here are some pictures of what red clay looks like in open fields at various times of day. If all else fails, which it has seemed to for you, just find open plains with few trees and look for the splotchy red/blue texture in the grass. I do wish you all the best of luck. If you still can't find it in the next attempt, post the seeds you are using, and I'll look through it to find the clay that so rudely eludes you. 6
Vixovivi Posted June 29 Report Posted June 29 New player here to donno if this might help but i had to walk around 2 hours looking for clay, i finaly installed a mod that shows particles over it cause maybe im color blind or something This is clay right in front of me and without that mod i would have never seen that shit? maybe im just unlucky but would be cool to come up with some nice way to find clay if its already common, like putting some sort of flower on top of it that only can grow on clay soil? Anyway if someone else has trouble finding clay try and get the mod: https://mods.vintagestory.at/show/mod/25211 -- The screenshot is without the mod which i turned off after i found it. Also ngl i was about to quit just out of frustration so hopefully this might help some soul that is as color blind as me to find CLAY hehe love the game besides this little hickup tho

So what you are requesting would be more of an 'accessibility' feature that likely should not exist for everyone but for those with a vision issue then sure.

The only scenario I can think of that might cause this issue for a new player is if they had learned how to teleport themselves to the equator and hit a desert that is 2,000 block radius. Highly unlikely this is the case, I think by the time a new player would start doing things like that they already know how to find clay.

Classic example of bad RNG. I've had worlds like this, where I trekked several minutes to get clay, only to figure out later that there's five different deposits right outside my base. It's a similar case with surface copper. My very first world, I didn't have access to lime, borax, or bauxite, so it took me a while(and several thousand blocks' worth of search) to find it. While aggravating at the time, it turned out to be a rather fond memory, and there was more satisfaction in finally accomplishing the mission than what a lot of games tend to produce. 1
Vixovivi Posted June 30 Report Posted June 30 yeah i donno if iam littarly color blind but haha It got abit frustrating when i kept finding threads with people saying how easy it is to find. For color blind people seems actually like it would be impossible. But later while looking for copper lol i did find some clay in another biome where it was easier to see it. Anyway just wanted mostly to link the mod for frustrated new players like me with not unlimited time sadly even if i enjoy it being hard i also dont wanna be stuck for more than maybe 3 hours. 1

CzBuCHi Posted Sunday at 04:11 PM Report Posted Sunday at 04:11 PM (edited) I came here for the same reason.... my biggest problem is that I don't know what to look for - not just clay, but anything else (horsetail for example looks completely different in the handbook than what I found by chance in the forest...) This is my map - I can see a few blue and beige 'spots' on it, but I have no idea what they mean... (went to random blue spot on map and found blue flowers...) Edit: Ofc i found clay 10 minutes after making this post ... maybe that is part of search? .... anyway .... map colors do not differ from surrounding at ... Edited Sunday at 04:37 PM by CzBuCHi
Ravensblade Posted Sunday at 04:29 PM Report Posted Sunday at 04:29 PM (edited) Actually i would recommend to create another standard world just for tasting various stuff. Just change type from survival to creative but don't use creative template as it create empty flat world. It helped me greatly at game start, since i didn't wasted resources or time on legit world, but tested stuff in creative. As for your map, i don't play with color map version so it could be peat instead of clay but i would check spots marked below: Edited Sunday at 04:32 PM by Ravensblade commands change
