1.22.0-rc.2 - Fishing, Mechanisms, Metalworking and More!

Dear Extraordinary Survivalists
v1.22.0-rc.2, a unstable release, can now be downloaded through the account manager.

This update fixes the most egregious bugs with the rc.1 release. While adding an unintended(!) new bug: in grid crafting, when spreading items between grid slots by dragging a stack, some recipe outputs will currently be invisible (but if the player clicks those items into the grid or takes the invisible item from the slot, the correct item has in fact been crafted) - we'll get this fixed for rc.3 ...

Game updates

  • Tweak: Fruiting bush cuttings now decay to a stick at only a 25% chance, rather than 100% chance.
  • Tweak: Performance - eliminate client-side block lag when placing/breaking blocks at large view distances while distant parts of world still loading
  • Fixed: Ongoing trader accessory cleanup, normalized element names across Villager hairstyle models
  • Fixed: Several freshwater fish were missing a 'run' animations.
  • Fixed: Hunter backpack was not centered on the seraph's back when worn.
  • Fixed: The Server Dashboard would not show the seed anymore after a client restart
  • Fixed: Dungeons where not properly disabled in Homo Sapiens mode
  • Fixed: Unable to step up onto trapdoors in front of trader houses
  • Fixed: Treasure hunter trader would give the same dialogue options as other traders
  • Fixed: Add proper name for fish pies
  • Fixed: Trading window would sometimes have too wide of a title bar
  • Fixed: Trader dialog window showed the wrong title
  • Fixed: Raccoons will once again harvest berries
  • Fixed: Foraging bonus applies to wild berry bushes
  • Fixed: Berry bushes will properly update the time needed to grow when changing state
  • Fixed: Berry bush "Health state:" and "Growth state" can be properly localized
  • Fixed: In handbook, armor items would crash the game in 1.22.0-rc.1
  • Fixed: Bad corruption to chunks in worlds first created in game version 1.20 or earlier, when loaded in 1.22.0-rc.1
  • Fixed: Crash when attempting to sit on a raft
  • Fixed: Crash when players get too far away from each other in multiplayer
  • Fixed: Error in log when players leave in multiplayer
  • Fixed: Linux install script now properly checks for net 10
  • Fixed: Hay block not craftable, in 1.22.0-rc.1  [due to overlap with grass shirt recipe]
  • API Feature: Add IBellowsAirReceiver to allow mods to attach the bellows to things other than the forge - thanks to funions123
  • API Fixed: Properly load all values of berry bushes the way you'd expect and add more defaults

The fishing is just not working for me - I can't seem to find a single lake (and I've tried some pretty big ones) which have fish - haven't seen a fish nor have I been able to catch one. How long does it usually take with worm bait to sit and wait? Do you see a fish swimming towards the line if there's no fish in the lake? Honestly though - fish being so rare feels silly to me.

Sometimes the fish are pretty hard to see, but in any case if it's a decent-size pond it's usually worth fishing in even if you see no fish.

Generally it doesn't take fish very long to bite a baited hook, if the area hasn't been overfished. I say "generally" because I've had it take a while to get a bite sometimes despite the area not being overfished. In that case I usually just reel in and re-cast, sometimes in a different spot, and have better luck. Sometimes the slow bite times can be due to the bait attracting a fish that is elsewhere in the lake/pond and is having trouble reaching the bait.

If there's no fish in the lake/pond you won't see anything swim toward the line. You'll just see the bobber bob when there's a bite.

Seems the account manager site is not responding. Perhaps too much traffic?  Been refreshing every 5 minutes or so for about 45 minutes now with no luck. :(

EDIT: Site is working now, yay!

Has anyone been able to solve the "Bad Request" error, when connecting to Dedicated Servers that have more than one mod installed? Everything works fine with one Mod, but as soon as you have more, this is what you see.

@LadyWYT Nah I'm still looking and have yet to see a single fish anywhere. I think something is broken.

Are you playing in a world made prior to 1.22? I suspect fish spawning is tied to chunk data now rather than just water blocks like salmon used to. Old chunks likely doesn't have this data so no fish spawns there.

If you're in a old world try going out into unexplored areas so new chunks can generate, you'll likely find fish there.

Alternatively, you can do what I did and swim out to the center of a lake and use the /wgen regen 1 command to regenerate chunks, if you try this though be cautious and make a backup of your world first and don't do it near your base or any nearby builds that you may have as it will wipe everything in a 3x3 chunk radius and replace it with new terrain, I ended up with a new island in the middle of the lake but it did make fish start spawning. 😅

FYI red chest recipe icon bugged atm (just reported it)

I had a similar issue after updating to rc 2. I got it to work by grabbing one of the stacks of cattails out of the crafting grid and then putting it directly back in.

100% I agree about the rarity of fish being ridiculous in the extreme.  I've installed 1.22, but played scores of hours of 1.26 and across every single save file, not one single body of water in any of them ever had more than three fish in total, and that's when they had any fish at all. So far, if anything, 1.22 seems to have increased the rarity.  I haven't tried to actually fish with the new mechanics yet.  That's been in part because across four different world seeds, none of the bodies of water I've come across have had any fish at all and I wasn't sure if that reflected whether or not fish would be available to catch.  (Also, I've always spent the first few days spear-fishing, and the released info about 1.22 would have me believe that's no longer possible.  Which, I won't make any bones about it - was an appallingly stupid change).

I can understand not wanting fish to be an easy source of protein that disincentivizes players from hunting.  But making fish that rare is a very bad way to do it, especially when the default hunger setting drops so quickly.

I see fish. Not often, which kinda feels realistic to me actually. But it's worth noting that they avoid you, and they'll probably notice you before you notice them, so a lot of the time I only notice them just as they're swimming away.

You can exploit this behaviour, by the way, because they're not very smart at pathing. Chase them into a corner in the shallows, and you can hurl a spear at them. They flee melee insanely fast, but a missile weapon will work.

This too seems entirely appropriate and realistic. Spearing fish works, but the conditions have to be just right to get close enough, while investing in a fishing rod and bait makes it a lot easier.

Anyone else having little success fishing in the ocean on rc.2? I caught a couple on rc.1 normally, but now I don't get any hits at all no matter how long I wait or where I go. I can still catch fish out of ponds quickly.

I'm also noticing little things are different but am not sure if it's by design?
1. The recipe grid now seems to be a lot more sensitive to having more "ingredients" than needed - for example to create a stone fence now i have to put exactly the right amount in multiples of the stone blocks, before one of the blocks could have an extra 1 or two and the fence could still be built...
2. The help dialog is not showing ALL the items that an "ingredient" can create - for some it does for others it does not - like if I look at cattails it does not show that I can create a reed chest - it only shows a torch and a hunter backpack.

You definitely do not need to see fish swimming or jumping to fish. I feel like after casting the line I always get a bite pretty fast, if there are fish around.

I still feel like the size needed for a water area to provide fish should be smaller. I've seen perfectly good ponds and areas which in real life would have fish for sure yet do not have them in the game because there's likely just a set modifier of X size that's needed and I think it's too big right now. Do reconsider tweaking that down a bit.

@TeaJay cool thanks - the thing is I haven't seen *a single fish* in this whole playthrough. And I've swam through lots of ponds and large lakes. I gave up on tryng to fish where I don't see any since I would wait minutes and nothing. But the fact that I haven't even seen a fish and I've looked so much sounds to me like there's something wrong.

Now can we start a new game in a new world?

Yes.  There is a risk of bugs doing undesired things though.  If you want to absolutely sure nothing bad happens wait for a stable release.   Based on my experience it could be a up to about 4 or 6 weeks before one of those comes out.

I've noticed that if you sneak, after a few seconds the fish will de-aggro and start swimming around peacefully again.

It's probably not really useful for spear fishing, but it does help with the fishing rod as they don't seem to bite when panicked.
