Is there some trick to finding resin in decent quantities?  I've been going dizzy spinning around pine trees looking for enough to get my mechanics started.  Is there a way to make pine trees create resin by cutting them?

Not that I know of, I got lucky and have 4 seeping trees pretty close together near my spawn. I would try going to a pine forest, walking up to one tree and carefull looking at each block of the trunk one by one, if none are leaking then chop down the tree and move on; eventually you should be able to clear-cut an area and just have a few resin producers left. My 4 were clustered enough that I suspect they aren't so rare, just really hard to spot through all the foliage and it's very hard to stay oriented and search forests in a truly organized manner.

Thanks.  I was hoping that there was some unknown game mechanic for finding/generating resin.  :(

Alas, I think the big "Challenge" is foraging. From what I see everyone can usually find 9 out of the 10 things they really need, and one thing just ends up being very rare for them, or really far from spawn, but it's different for everyone. Lime is a common stickler, for my world so far Lime has been pretty scarce, but Bauxite has been straight up non-existent. Not that I haven't gone farther than a few thousand blocks yet... But it frustrates me that this game's default world settings seems to expect travel / exploration in the tens-of-thousands of blocks, and yet you have to settle down to eat reliably or have better than flint tools.

Covering more ground is the trick - much as it is to all questions of "I am having trouble finding X".

Roam far enough from your base, and you'll find so many resin trees, wild bee hives, copper deposits, ruins, and so on and so forth that you'll eventually just stop marking them on your map because you have more than enough already.

For me resin is just too damn hard to find.  I've spent days wandering the forests and only come back with maybe 4-5 pieces of resin.  It's a real bottleneck.  I'm actually considering trying to mod the resin rates up but I haven't found where to mod that yet.

There are a couple of mods that let you get around that: one by letting you make resin out of pine trees, and one that lets you crush soybeans in a quern for oil that you can use in the recipes instead of resin. Which would you prefer?

Resin Renaissance is one of them right?  What's the other one?

Go for it. I'll see if I can get the Expanded Foods spile to spit out resin if you stick it in a pine tree, too.

Any update on that? I know this is an old post, but I've recently started using mods and have tried putting a spile on a tree but I figure it takes a reeeally long time to produce anything, so I'm still wondering if that works that way.

Also, you mentioned the craftables mod - the description is awesome, but it looks to be outdated and the most recent comment under it begs the creator to update it - is it a lost cause now? 😥

checked the Craftables mod and noticed it's outdated so I wanted to check if that means its unusable now or if it's still good to go.

These mods I'd consider fair and balanced:

https://mods.vintagestory.at/treetapping#follow

Smith a copper ingot into 2 spikes and combine with 2 buckets to get 2 taps.

https://mods.vintagestory.at/show/mod/21442

Lets you adjust spawn rate of the logs and if planted pine trees can also generate them.

Very configurable. Both still work up to and including 1.21RC2.

This one is cheaty, but considering how hard it is to find them without clearing out half the leaves from the forest, I don't feel bad about using it:

https://mods.vintagestory.at/show/mod/10128#tab-description

Which also still works.

Or this, which I haven't tried yet, but consolidates all the visible particle mods, and is up to date:

https://mods.vintagestory.at/particlesplus#tab-description

Of course in my latest game I seem to be tripping over resin logs, I don't know if the spawn rate was increased or I just got lucky for once.

It is January, first winter and resin is no longer a concern for the foreseeable future for me, so I may start foregoing the taps and lower the spawn rate for planted trees.

Welcome to the forums! In addition to what @Krougal said, you might try this mod as well to help you find resin: https://mods.vintagestory.at/barkbeetle

Seems to be working on recent version, and it's a rather nice, immersive way to find the resin spots instead of relying purely on particles or other less immersive methods.

Oh, nice. Like the buzzwords mod, because bees nests are another thing that are nearly impossible to find without tearing up half the trees.

I would really like to have more mods like this instead of having to use the blatantly cheaty ones.

For me, I use a combo of an option in DanaTweaks that make resin visible on 4 sides and Particle Plus. I really like the Bark Beetle one but never used it because like bees, audio cues aren't enough for me, i need visual cues. But if SaltyWater one day add a similar feature as buzzwords, I think I would install it :)

I think particle are not that bad, if you run around without paying attention you can still miss it.

The same trees constantly produce resin. Once collected, a new batch is produced a month later. If you mark just a few resin trees on your map and walk around them periodically, they'll yield dozens of resin units over the course of a year.

Yeah, this is what I did.  Marked every resin tree on the map and farmed them reguarly.   Luckily I have a pine forest on shale quite close and over time been able to mark 17 trees within reasonable distance.

Yeah, I am actually thinking of ditching the tree-tap mod.

I don't know if generation got improved with 1.21 or I just got lucky, but I find plenty of trees.

The tree-tap is a great mod, but it really trivializes resin collection, at least without some kind of massive new resin sink being added that demands more resin.

Resin bearing tree generation is highly susceptible to RNG.   My last world had a large pine forest and I could get almost 32 from a run through that forest.  I've had some mixed forests that have enough pine trees to produce 10 or so resin per visit.

Yeah, that is what I am seeing in my last couple worlds (granted using same seed but different settings).

Prior versions I have really had trouble collecting the stacks of resin needed for my modest windmill setup without setting up a few tree-taps.
