Anybody else finding the Temporal Storms too difficult?
Maelstrom replied to Mourning Wood's topic in Discussion
1.20 rc8 - heavy temporal storm earlier today - Nothing but bowtorns spawned. I counted about 24 bowtorns at one point. Ain't no way I would try that even if I were a blackguard in steel plate with steel falx. -
Looks like there's still storm tweaking left to do. Just had a heavy storm that spawned only bowtorns. Don't think I'd try this storm as a blackguard with steel plate mail and a steel falx.

Weeeeellll... Once upon a time nickel and chromite didn't have uses. I bet Tyron will implement something for graphite in the next 2 to 3 updates.

I've hunted during nights of high rift activity without death. Temporal storms are a whole new ball game with higher tier mobs. Until good armor is available a bunker or safe kill box is likely the best option to survive. 1.190 I'd run nekkid with flint spears merrily dispatching anything and everything (include multiple two headed drifters). The higher tier bowtorns are malevolent, malicious mother truckers! Killed me three times in the first storm I attempted. I'm gonna have to test the new storm spawning after the new mob storm spawning was tweaked.

Is the overtuned cave "darkness" fog a bug or intentional?
Maelstrom replied to Ketoth's topic in Discussion
I had weird sunlight deep in caves or mining shafts from rising and setting suns. -
Prospecting is tedious and ruins the game for me. {Help!}
Maelstrom replied to Danny97's topic in Discussion
For me the miniscule difference in the numbers points the direction to continue searching to get that Ultra High reading. Sometimes the search for the coveted ore is a humble start. -
How do you keep Blackguards from eating all your food??!?!?
Maelstrom replied to Teh Pizza Lady's topic in Discussion
For the past 2+ years I've played exclusively blackguard and the first run world as blackguard drilled into me the importance of foraging constantly. For the first time I'm playing hunter in my current world, but have the habit of collecting ever single calorie providing food I can find. Welp, mushrooms are very plentiful in my area and I was gathering them to my hearts content, especially having a storage vessel on day 3. Cooked up some veggie porridge using some of them mushrooms and my first bite resulted in a point of damage. "Music?" I thought bewildered as I looked around for the drifter despite it being broad daylight. Didn't see any and thought I had triggered some fall damage from a stone or something. A bit later took another meal from the cook pot and... "Music AGAIN?! What the?!" Looked at the cook pot and saw a less than agreeable mushroom. Whoopsies. -
I'm likely getting better drops, I just haven't subjectively felt it is much different.

That would likely be a detriment since this is a game, not even a simulator. Best results are gained from KISS - Keeping It Simple. Use the numbers ONLY to determine which direction to continue to search for the best chance for an ore to spawn in that area and nothing more. -

Quality of the ore is only determined once you can lay eyes on it. Prospecting only tells you the likelihood of the ore being in the area (density search) or that there is ore in the area (node search). -

I will add Death Caps as an alternative. As their name implies they are very toxic. Both of these tend to be rather magical in nature as the blackguard will be sent back to the point of appearing, which if it is near your current locale may not discourage them from stealing your food and could actually anger them. Low calorie meals like only grain porridges and vegetable stews are frustrating low calorie foods for blackguards and a steady diet of such may inspire them to start cooking for themselves. -
In 1.19 Joy of Sailing had incredible speed that wasn't ridiculous like that one raft mod.

Additionally, that number does NOT insure there is that much ore in that chunk. It is at best an indication of how much ore COULD be there IF ORE SPAWNS in that area. It's best to read the wordy descriptor until you get the highest reading you can. The devs have confirmed to me that the numbers should ONLY be used to determine which wordy descriptor is a stronger reading, such as Decent 3.02 versus Decent 2.84. -
Drifters are Misunderstood In one of my first worlds way back in 1.14 I was laying down a pathway over a sandy plain when the sand gave way over a deep pit with absolutely no indication of the gaping maw of a ravenous crevasse laying in wait. I survived the fall with half my health (stoopid pit!) and started looking for a way out when I was greeted by a friendly group of drifters who very kindly solved the problem of my half-full health bar while simultaneously yeeting me back to spawn. Wish I could have found them again so that I could properly thank them for their very generous and proactive assistance with my problems.

Post a report or story about what has happened to you in our beloved game. It could be something funny that happened or something decidedly UNfunny that you later could laugh about. The inaugural story is courtesy of @traugdor So, uh… does anyone else have this problem? So I'm playing on a multiplayer server with a friend of mine. I picked Clockmaker and she picked Blackguard. While she was off mining, I spent an embarrassing amount of time crafting the perfect stew. Like, I’m talking Gordon Ramsay levels of effort here. Red meat, bearded tooth mushrooms (do you know how hard those are to find?!), and turnips—TURNIPS, people. I simmered it all down into what can only be described as “a pot of warm hugs for your soul.” When it was done, I proudly poured it into a crock, sealed it like the responsible adult I pretend to be, and lovingly placed it on the shelf in our house. I stepped outside for maybe five minutes to check on the bronze I had poured earlier, and when I came back? The crock was empty. EMPTY. At first, I thought, “Wow, I must’ve been hungrier than I realized.” But then I saw crumbs on the floor. Crumbs. And there, just beyond my window, was a Blackguard trotting off into the sunset, probably picking her teeth with a twig and muttering about “a nice stew that could’ve used more salt.” WHAT. JUST. HAPPENED? Is this normal? Are Blackguards, like… food critics in disguise? Should I be flattered or offended? Why do they even want stew? Do they have digestive systems? Can I lure them into a hole with a trail of stew-soaked turnips? More importantly, HOW DO I STOP THESE GREEDY JERKS FROM EATING MY FOOD?! Do I need to build a stew vault? Hide my food underground? Barter with them? (Do they like pie better? Should I bake pie?) Or is there some secret mechanic I’ve missed entirely? Because if I can’t keep my hard-earned meals safe, I’m going to have to live off raw bushmeat and regret. Please help. I’m tired of feeding the local population. And also, I miss my stew. So let's hear your story, or stories. The more the merrier!

How do you keep Blackguards from eating all your food??!?!?
Maelstrom replied to Teh Pizza Lady's topic in Discussion
That. Was. Hilarious! As a blackguard myself, it doesn't matter what the meal is made of. The calories are what is important. I suggest making a nice red meat, cabbage and fruit stew for your blackguard friend. While they're nom'ing to their hearts content make your delicious meat and mushroom stew for yourself. You may want to leave a second high calorie meal for your friend if you want to protect your leftovers. -
I wonder if the story changed and the devs decided to go in a slightly different direction. Thinking on the Lovecraft theme ancient temple ruins would fit in to the world, but the new story content seems to distance the world from ancient arcane knowledge / religious rites.

Same here. Until someone mentioned the penalties are barely noticeable, so I went straight to blackguard. The increased hunger rate was a delightful challenge (it makes cooking meals in a crock very important early game) and I did notice that seeds from wild crops had a noticeable decline, but otherwise I couldn't tell the difference. The extra health really helps in the early game as it's easier to survive those surprise wolf attacks and once nutrition is high bears aren't as scary. Likewise with hunter I haven't noticed the mob drops being better than other classes, but the increased accuracy in projectile targeting is WONDERFUL! Those benefits make the commoner not having any benefits actually turns it into a class penalty. I highly encourage you to take some time and look through the classes and pick on that suits your style. Prefer melee combat over ranged combat or like mining? Pick blackguard. Love exploring new locales and robbing graves, err looting ruins? Malefactor.

That's GORGEOUS! And a lot better than my chiseling/artistic skills.

Did you start this in 1.19? All that fire clay shingling would be an even bigger nightmare in 1.20! I'm surprised that you haven't found high fertility soil yet.
-
Not necessarily. The bonuses fit my playstyle very well. Find a class that you like. BTW, the penalties aren't that noticeable, so try something different once in a while. Something else killed your chickens. Last night I watched a fox terrorize my chickens while unsuccessfully attempting to get through a single high fence. IF the fox got into the pen it was either a glitch (I've seen entities glitch through walls) or you left some kind of path to your chickens open. /edit - or the fox spawned in your chicken pen.

And now for something almost completely different... Flammable fire starters? Sticks are flammable. Grass is flammable. But combine them in a fire starter and it becomes asbestos!

Ability to control the type of monsters in world spawn
Maelstrom replied to midknightowl's topic in Suggestions
If your friends don't like arachnid like mobs, they'll want to disable locusts as well. Those are even MORE arachnid like. Frankly, since this game draws a LOT of inspiration from HP Lovecraft I'd expect that there'll be things that will induce even more squeamishness in future updates. -
Anything posted before @trampek commented should be ignored. Wolves in 1.19 and later have a different behavior than what was posted before. The last post was 2022 when the game was 1.15? I think?
