Or... the lack thereof?

Hey everyone, I thought I would bring this to General, since I've had this issue with the game for some time. There is a bug I just added to the issue tracker, where voices/beards are reassigned to a player upon character creation, leaving you with a different "instrument" and "tone" of voice than the one you choose!

So my questions to YOU, dear players, are:

Do you USE the high pitched voices? Have you EVER met ANYONE who does? ...did they go deaf? maybe they already were - i digress.

Is there any info about the coming character voice/ 'no-more-instrument' rework?

Have any of you noticed the lack of voice volume options in the game?

Have any of you wanted to create a new character at some point on a multiplayer server, and were astounded that you need to run a server command to initiate this process?

Ok, this isn't a crusade, but I honestly do not understand how anyone plays with this bug which I reported. Even IF I am just dumb, and only I have this problem, the presence of voice volume controls in the options and/or character recreation being able to be requested from the client could/would easily solve this issue for me, or at least make it something I could live with.

Thoughts? ... cheers

I don't like new characters voices. I tried different setting and always it sounds bad like something is scratching my brain. It would be nice to make them less loud. Volume bar for them is very good idea. It's hard to play at night when you try do build something and drifters throw rocks at you and you here never ending beep beep beep...

I also hate them.  I won't be able to play this game unless I can mute them, or change them.  Complete immersion breaker for me.  I've seen some useful mods for this.  Still need to try some of them out and get back in and see if that fixes it for me.

IIRC there is a lore reason why have the seraphs (player characters) have instrument-like voices.
But I'm not surprised to read most people find them annoying.

I don't even notice them except when I'm trying to hear some other sound effect. I hit escape at character generation so whatever voice is randomly selected is it. It's just background noise that's not all that hard to tune out.

[EDIT]

It gets easier to do with time. I've been married for over 34 years now... ;) j/k, it's a skill I honed mixing the various vocals and instruments to produce music. You've got to learn to not hear the screamin' guitars and thumping bass line to pick out what needs to happen in the midrange.

I hate them as well, and even worse, my wife hates them from halfway across the house but if I make the volume any lower, I can't hear the sounds that matter (like when a wolf is eating my face). I don't have as much experience as Thorfinn does, at least I have something to look forward to I guess.

Tuba/low, every time. Everything else is annoying and squeaky. If I ever play on a multiplayer server, it should MANDATE tuba/low as the voice for everybody. Then we can all stand in the town square making a single, continous WOOOOMF sound.

It'll be great.

I like them. They're adorably goofy, and which one I pick depends on the character I want to play. I don't think there's a lore reason for why the voices are portrayed by instruments, though there IS a lore reason for why there's very different melodies for certain characters, let's say. As for why instruments...I presume it's just a style choice, similar to the one made in Don't Starve. It also leaves a lot more room to use one's imagination to fill in details on the characters too.

If I had to change anything though, I'd probably tune the sounds just a bit so they don't sound so...flat. But then again, I don't know that much about music, so I don't know if that accurately describes what I'm thinking of or not. Otherwise I'd just add a few more instrument options, like maybe a cello or violin.

Did the voices change in 20 or is this complaint about the voices we've always had?

It's an old thread that got resurrected--the player voices haven't changed in 1.20.

The only one I like is medium alto-flute purely because I was a transverse flautist in the past, but even that sounds awful to me.

There is a human voice mod on the moddb, I use it for my ultra-modded singleplayer worlds and it completely solves the problem for me.

Anger inducing, it has to be said, and to add insult to injury you can't explicitly turn them off. If all I had to rely on was visual cues (such as a blood vignette, character shaking or just looking at the relevant health/hunger bars) then I would be happy to turn them off. Turning them off (Entity Sound Level - I presume) reduces all sounds it seems.

I get it, the devs have a vision, and that is to be commended, but something as teeth-grating as these sounds should not be forced onto players.

If I was going to mention this to a friend, I would specifically warn them about the voices which seems a shame as there is far more to praise in the title than there is to complain about.

I gotta agree with @LadyWYT; I think they’re adorable and novel and they actually contribute to my feeling of immersion.  I like the fact that Seraphs (and Traders) don’t sound like “real” people.  I would find that annoying!  It’s like we’re all speaking some weird Angelic language, so it fits my pre-existing “head cannon” pretty well.

will confess to avoiding the higher tones for my character.  I usually go for the mid to low Sax or Flute.

Hey, at least we don’t make musical snoring sounds when we sleep! (Now there’s an idea for a mod… 🤔)

...I didn't know I needed this until now. I wanna annoy my friend with it!
